Just seen this tweet from Venice Allen
Have any of the Tory leadership hopefuls pledged to fight for ‘trans rights’ yet? It’s absolutely extraordinary how this issue has shifted since 2018 when @DavidTCDavies was the only conservative MP brave enough to stand up for women.

She's so right - we should remember where we started from and the toll it's taken on brave individuals standing up and dissenting at great cost.

The Penny Mordaunt group of MPs have really made a huge mistake with all the 'so called feminist', TWAW contempt they've thrown at GC women. I'm not offering any golden bridges to them.

@LadyAnnabelsTapestries

Owen Jones posted a video of her previous position and is saying her statements are a significant backtracking and she is throwing trans people under the bus to get ahead. Jones is right. She has always been “TWAW” and “trans people are the most marginalised”. This is a significant reverse ferret. I have no confidence that she secretly agrees with us whatsoever.

‘That said PM has a twin who I think feels TWAW so it's hard for her and explains why she's trying to do a balancing act between two positions.....’

We can’t vote for people pandering to their brothers, though.

I agree 100% but it does explain why she appears to dip her toes into things such as research gathering into the astronomical rise in girls presenting with gender dysphoria, then letting it fall by the wayside. I have a feeling that were it not for the conflict of interest she'd be fully GC.

Reading that Times article (thanks for the share token) I think it's just so sad and disappointing.

On the face of it she has a lot going for her. She didn't attend private school which is refreshing and rare these days for MPs on either side of the aisle, but particularly tories (nothing wrong with PS but it makes her a bit more relatable for people like myself)

Her mother died young and she was the main carer for her brother but worked hard, and paid for six form by becoming a magician's assistant no less.

First in her family to attend university, put her degree to work. Has trained in the Navy and been a reservist. Has co-authored a book.

This is great. This is the sort of background that invokes respect and would get me wanting to vote for a party headed by this woman.

Then you get this: Announcing the Gender Recognition Act in the Commons, Mordaunt said the legislation would be a “culture change” in the UK and that the equality of those who were born a woman and those who were not would be the “starting point ... and finishing point” of the consultation.

And this: Mordaunt reiterated her stance last year while paymaster general, repeating at the dispatch box that “trans men are men and trans women are women” during a debate on maternity allowances. It is claimed she tried to get the word “mother” removed from the maternity bill,

What a very big shame.

Constrast: The reforms were scrapped in 2020 by Liz Truss, now another contender for the Tory leadership, who said plans for “self ID” would not be brought forward because she felt the original legislation struck the right balance

It was a choice between two female candidates it would be Liz Truss who would be getting my vote. As a woman I just will never vote for a party headed by anyone who throws our right to women only spaces away and obfuscates feminine titles with neutral terminology.

That said PM has a twin who I think feels TWAW so it's hard for her and explains why she's trying to do a balancing act between two positions......

The fact that any feminist would want a tory government after the last few years is very sad.

It really is pretty sad that the Tories are currently the only party who appear to be listening to people's concerns about gender ideology and the erosion of women's rights and the harms being done to children. Hopefully by the next GE we will have at least one left wing party will have come to their senses. Perhaps Labour and Lib Dems and the Greens will start to twig that it isn't a just a tiny minority of bigoted women who have concerns. They might realise that this is not about being "anti-trans"; it is about being pro woman, pro free speech, pro reality and science.

Luxa · 10/07/2022 12:09

MN should ask all the prospective Tory Leadership candidates in for an exclusive FWR webchat, wonder how many of them would have the guts to accept.

That's a great idea! Have you suggested it to MN?

What’s the alternative then @DisgustedofManchester ?

Oh yes!

BaronessWrongCrowdRex · 10/07/2022 10:09

So Penny has suddenly realised how important this issue is to a lot of women and is trying to reverse ferret a little. Thing is I don’t believe her. Her Twitter thread was a load of nonsense and she was caught out in a lie.

You nailed your colours to the mast, Penny, we all saw it it. We know that you won’t have women’s backs, we know you won’t protect our rights. We see you. The damage has been done and you only have yourself to blame.

VestofAbsurdity · 10/07/2022 09:59

McDuffy · 10/07/2022 07:30

Reckon she'd come back for a FWR webchat? Smile

Motorina · 10/07/2022 09:55

@OldCrone ahhh sorry! That makes sense then. Thank you.

SameSkyDifferentPlanet · 10/07/2022 09:51

It’s official, PM a becomes the ninth candidate to stand for leader.

OldCrone · 10/07/2022 09:46

Yes @Motorina , that speech is by Tanni Grey-Thompson. I was replying to a post which said:

Tanni GT is Chair of UKActive who do not appear to support protecting female spaces.

I thought it was clear that 'she' in my reply referred to Tanni Grey-Thompson, as Penny Mordaunt wasn't mentioned by me or by the poster I was replying to. Sorry for any confusion.

She has spoken in the House of Lords about single-sex spaces

hansard.parliament.uk//Lords/2020-02-24/debates/D9459D1B-FADF-4765-AB3F-F55D4B322060/details#contribution-9283079F-4DE5-48A3-832F-CBA3514B1ACD

Some excerpts:

There is a reason that the UN, WaterAid and other organisations have called for single-sex spaces. Social convention is there to safeguard women and girls to prevent harm. Eroding social convention will make it harder to maintain these boundaries.

If there is somebody in an accessible toilet who needs to be in there for a long period of time, the only other option I have is to use the women’s toilet. In that instance, I have to go with the door open.

It's worth reading her whole speech. She is very much in favour of single-sex spaces for women and girls.

Thread about the HoL debate.
www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/3832633-House-of-Lords-Women-Spaces-Hurrah

I'm really confused because, whilst I agree that's a great speech, it's attributed to Baroness Grey-Thompson. Who isn't Penny Mordaunt. So I'm not sure what that speech has to do with her?

It's possible (probable?) I'm missing something, because I'm not used to reading Hansard, so please tell me if I'm being daft.

achillestoes · 10/07/2022 08:59

Hartley-Skewer just got her anyway...

achillestoes · 10/07/2022 08:09

She also tags in Pregnant and Screwed, an organisation which does great work, but whose timeline is chockfull of retweets of Caroline Nokes and Stella Creasy. Theirs is a particular type of feminism: it’s very middle class, it’s very woke, and it would mean women choosing between their reproductive rights (which are important) and safe spaces (which are also important), as well as proper medical care for distressed kids.

If I wanted this mash-up of champagne socialism and ultra privileged feminism, I’d vote Labour.

achillestoes · 10/07/2022 08:02

Even on her thread she can’t avoid tagging in “proud she/her” Ashley James, who can’t imagine being offended by workplace pressure to display your allegiance to transgender ideology (Halifax), who supports the presence of transwomen in women’s sports, and who believes transgender teachers should be going into dorms with opposite sex kids on school trips.

ON HER OWN THREAD, insisting she knows what a woman is.

rogdmum · 10/07/2022 07:42

I wonder if she will still ignore me if I asked her the results of that research

<knows answer will be yes>

achillestoes · 10/07/2022 07:42

I also don’t like her tweet thread. Read this again: ‘I hope in the next few days we’ll be able to discuss how to get our economy growing again and how our citizens can live well.’

As an introduction to the topic of her climb down on her comments on a topic of importance to women, this sounds very “silly season” and “oh look, the women are talking about being a woman again”. It’s the same empty tactic Labour tried to use when they rolled their eyes about “people obsessed with genitals”.

It doesn’t work. This isn’t a silly topic, it’s about the ability of a politician to recognise and live by truth or lies, and that couldn’t be more relevant in the post-Johnson era.

achillestoes · 10/07/2022 07:38

@McDuffy

I’m not sure she would.

McDuffy · 10/07/2022 07:30

Reckon she'd come back for a FWR webchat? Smile

achillestoes · 10/07/2022 07:15

I’m sure she did commission some research. That’s not enough. We need someone in power who (like Johnson, in the end) recognises that childhood transition is fundamentally wrong. That the ‘treatment’ being offered to these children is predicated on the existence of a condition that actually can’t be proven to exist at all, and that the trans conversion therapy ban was a threat to proper psychological and psychiatric treatment of those children.

ResisterRex · 10/07/2022 07:04

She says she set up the Cass Review:

https://mobile.twitter.com/PennyMordaunt/status/1545908477163458561

All I remember from the time was as rogdmum says, a lot of questions about what's happening. And all I can find is this from July 2019 - some research being commissioned by the GEO:

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/government-set-to-begin-next-phase-of-gender-transition-research

But that's not the Cass Review, which was announced under Hancock at the time but by NHS England in Autumn 2020:
