This is what gender non-conforming can look like. This is extending the boundaries of what it means to be male.

Why shouldn't a boy wear a dress if it makes him happy?

Please remain yourself, Korben: a gay bloke.

We're in the sex and gender topic. I think it's important to make it clear gender critical people are delighted to see both male and female people challenging gender stereotypes.

The problem with that is that virtually all men have an ulterior motive for doing so.

JellySaurus · 05/07/2022 23:32

FWIW I don't think it takes so much courage for a boy to wear a dress these days, but it does take courage to stand against the prevailing trans tide. I thought it was particularly powerful that he chose to leave his drag persona behind and come as his true self. Which is a boy.

This.

I think that even apart from the drag element, it's to the point that he is looking to be in the media.

There is a reason that so often the people we see pushing the envelope around presentations are people like rock stars. It's because they have an interest in making waves, being remembered, doing something different.

In general it's not because they have some deep inner need to wear a dress or have big hair. It's an image. And it will often set of a trend that others follow, and maybe it's not so edgy any more after that.

When private individuals push boundaries there can often be a lot more ambiguity for people to wonder why they are doing that. Maybe the individual has a deep need to have big hair, but people I suspect tend to be skeptical about that. Maybe he is also pushing the envelope in the same way a David Bowie is, some people are like that. But there can also be less innocent reasons to push at boundaries and that's always the concern I think.

This kid seems like the celebrity type. Which is fine, but I don't think it's really laudable.

ChagSameachDoreen · 05/07/2022 22:56

Meh.

I'm not expending energy lauding a male.

I find it really sad that ‘boy wears dress’ is considered to be news. I was a teenager in the 80s - the time when Boy George, Marilyn, Annie Lennox etc all challenged the stereotypes. The fact that a number of people (or ‘folx’ as they’d probably call themselves) now think that the clothes you wear determine whether you’re a man or a woman shows that we’ve gone backwards. Wear what you like, kid, you look
great. Just remember you’re a fella…

The big news isn't "boy wears dress", it's "boy wears dress and this doesn't make him a girl".

He looks amazing. Better than I look in a dress. I'm glad he felt comfortable to go in the outfit he wanted.

But other than that he's just done the same as Jamie (as in, everybody's talking about) did 15 years ago. Or whenever it was.

It's launching a drag career. Canny.

Didn't think of that.

I went to year 11 prom in a suit in 2001, with short spiky hair. Even back then no one gave a fuck. They were more shocked when I went in a red prom dress and even shorter hair in year 13. Think they’d got used to only seeing me in trousers by then 😁 No one lined up to cheer on either occasion though, I feel hard done by…

Seriously though, I actually find something about that really disquieting. All the performance cheering. I always thought lgbt progress would be when it was just a non-event.

It’s all so bloody depressing, all of it. Sigh.

I thought he looked amazing, the strong colours really suit him. I loved the picture of him in the sparkle jacket, with his mum. First impression was, ‘shame it has to make news, but glad he has received acceptance for being him.’ Then I read the bit about drag and thought, ‘shame he thinks it’s ok to appropriate women’. What the hell is wrong with just being a boy in a dress?

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 05/07/2022 20:59

This isn't about boys being able to dress however they want. This is about drag

didnt read…just saw picture 😔

ZaraSizeMedium · 05/07/2022 20:57

Yeah I got to the part where they talked about his drag persona, 'Miss Frou Frou', and thought this is a very well done publicity stunt.

PearlClutch · 05/07/2022 20:53

Clymene · 05/07/2022 20:46

He's a boy trying to start up a career as a drag artist. Miss Frou Frou.

I don't like drag. I especially don't like children doing drag.

Here he is pulling fake money out of his dress.

How very disappointing.

Yes - female family member went to her prom in a simply stunning 3-piece suit - jacket, waistcoat, trousers in traditional male style. No one will pick this up and propagate it around social media.

There was one girl in a stunning three piece suit at my local secondary prom. She looked absolutely tip-top. No newspaper headlines, mind you.

Albgo · 05/07/2022 20:49

Clymene · 05/07/2022 20:28

He looks great. But there are thousands of girls who have dressed up for their proms and look fabulous. And no one cares.

This boy also has a drag persona and this is going to be an amazing fillip to his career.

While I'm sure he's a lovely young man, I don't know what it's got to do with feminism.

Sorry to piss on everyone's chips.

Yep. I read he does drag and my heart sank.

Luxa · 05/07/2022 20:48

Yes. That was about equality, saying 'whether you're female or male, you get to decide what you wear and what you do, whether it happens to fit a stereotype or not.'

The current situation is the opposite, as though stereotypes, and whether you fit them, tell you who you are. You have short hair? In the 80s you were perhaps a typical teenage girl with a Lady Di haircut. But today, it must of course mean you're male, a trans man or a lesbian. Otherwise you would have long hair, QED. It's incredibly backward looking and yes, like the 70s and 80s never happened.

The more men that realise they can wear what the fuck they like and still be men, means there are less that want to encroach on our spaces.

And, even more importantly, the more kids who realise they can wear what the fuck they like and still be the sex they are, means there are less that will get sucked into the ideology and end up harming their bodies and their mental and emotional health.

We're in the sex and gender topic. I think it's important to make it clear gender critical people are delighted to see both male and female people challenging gender stereotypes. Women won the right to wear trousers and other 'male' attire a long time ago. Hardly any UK men have pushed back in the same way to wear dresses/skirts other than kilts or other ethnic dress. We all know why. Men and boys showing an interest in typically feminine things are considered to be effeminate and not truly male, which is unacceptable.

Good luck to this lad.

Good for him. People can be gender non conforming without having to be trans.

I don’t agree with a child in their early teens being allowed to perform as a drag queen though. It’s not appropriate for children to be adult entertainers.

GrabbyGabby · 05/07/2022 20:40

I hark back to my teens, the boys (straight and gay) wore more make up than i did. I want that back. More fun less identity obsessing

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 05/07/2022 20:37

its got fuck all to do with feminism

theres a few threads like that on here today
