In case we hadn’t had enough drama.

Good luck, Maya.

@BIWI I'm seriously impressedGrin

@FannyCann I desperately want a 'Radicalised by Mumsnet' t-shirt.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 07/07/2022 11:01

Mumsnetters I think are amazing

MNHQ not so much. The debate happened here in spite of them

MarshaBradyo · 07/07/2022 10:58

FWR is the reason I know about it and feel so strongly

I appreciate all the posters who started before I came across it and have continued

Often to verbal attacks

FannyCann · 07/07/2022 10:54

Another one radicalised by Mumsnet. I think I saw a twitter hashtag about mountaineering and that led me to a Mumsnet link where I discovered children were being prescribed puberty blockers.
I couldn't believe this was happening.

LaughingPriest · 07/07/2022 10:40

Wow - amazing how desperate the presenter was to get away from sport - Maya was simply not allowed to say that a male person is not a woman when competing in sport. Why is that a separate aspect?

LaughingPriest · 07/07/2022 10:37

Found it now...

I was listening too. It was perhaps the most confidently I have ever heard Maya say on mainstream media that a person can't change sex. Of course, all decent people do their best to respect others, however they present. But we are allowed to think the truth and to express that when it matters. One of the difficulties is we have been so conditioned over the past 5 years to not speak.

I'm trying to 'listen again' - was this during the Today programme? I can't find it!

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 07/07/2022 10:29

Sorry for the downer - we should just be celebrating Maya! And I am! Smile

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 07/07/2022 10:27

Anyone looking forward to the glorious moment that Stonewall get taken to court and get pwned?

As a GC woman I get what you mean, but to me it's not a glorious moment. It breaks my heart to see what happened to Stonewall. And it's a dangerous moment. Other organisations are stepping up but it's created a massive split and everyone suffers from that. For all that Stonewall brought it on themselves and left no choice but to take them on, I still couldn't celebrate their destruction with a whole heart.

For so long I kept thinking "do we really have to do all this, couldn't Stonewall just apologise for an almighty fuckup and move on"? I know, how naive can an old lady be! I hadn't realised how entrenched and ingrained the whole thing had become, that there really was an ideology they'd agreed to swallow whole, however barking (and repressive) that ideology was in practice. And now we all pay for it Sad

Also mumsnetters are incredibly adept at saying what they want to say by one means or another. It was one of the fascinating aspects of the forum that Sarah Pedersen pointed out in her book.

I remember when Sarah Pedersen was interviewed by Selina Todd about the book, that was very entertaining and informative.

Madcats · 07/07/2022 10:13

I stumbled into this bit of "Talk" in the early days of Alison's hearing. I had little/no real idea what had been going on in the corporate world and sport. It's been an eye opener, thank you.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 07/07/2022 10:07

I think mumsnettowers should be incredibly proud of allowing that space.

I also am impressed by MumsNet for making that space. Despite the compromises that has involved, some of which I do find hard to tolerate! Including the frustrating restrictions on language that made it hard to talk accurately and clearly. I agree about the need to "corrall" everything into FWR but I can see why and as things change there's more room to keep information posted in the mainstream groups even if we can't discuss it there.

MumsNet have walked a fine line and I'm impressed with how well they've done to keep discussion alive in very difficult circumstances. And I don't suppose things have got much easier yet, if anything we may still see pushback for quite some time.

Thank you MumsNet Towers!

IcakethereforeIam · 07/07/2022 10:07

Yeah! To MN and posters, not perfect but here, now. Thank you.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 07/07/2022 10:06

I am very much in the "radicalised by Mumsnet" camp. I am enormously grateful for this space.

mrshoho · 07/07/2022 10:02

So true. I too thank Mumsnet for this space. The support and factual advice/links has been invaluable.

Oh bugger. I meant to quote the JKR blowing us a kiss post.

I don't go fainting at just anything.

@JoodyBlue

I agree. Holding these discussions in a dedicated and civil space has been very powerful. It’s all here as a record as well.

I think MN wants to support free speech and women's rights, whilst not wanting to be overwhelmed by complaints which would grind it to a halt.
It also wouldn't want to alienate a significant percentage of its users who don't feel strongly either way on the issue and don't want it rammed down their throats (even if people on this board think that percentage are naive or willfully ignorant).
To be honest I think MN is doing a pretty good job on this topic. Yes it asks wording to be a bit convoluted at times, but it has provided a forum for discussion, and things can be said here that haven't been allowed anywhere else.
It also insists that its rules on petitions and crowdfunders are followed whilst simultaneously letting people on here be very clear about when they exist.
Don't let perfect be the enemy of good enough. MN may not be perfect but it is doing a good enough job on this imo.

The fact that Maya (and JKR) acknowledges Mumsnet (which will be predominantly this forum) really highlights the enigma that is MNHQ and Justine on this. Maya was posting here and being supported. The discussion that has taken place here has been a major contributor to this landmark decision. I struggle to understand why MNHQ isn’t phenomenally proud of its role in such a landmark decision. Instead they talk about allowing discussion while at the same time corralling it into one small space and have had special moderation rules around discussing the very thing Maya has won the right to state freely.

I really genuinely don’t get what MNHQ wants to BE on this🧐.

The thing is we all know that there are women/mothers who don't agree with the arguments made on FWR. We may consider their reasons and disagree also. But the fact that mumsnet holds space for disagreement -- perhaps that's the modelling we need to see in society. It is what is missing - a grown up space to discuss and to disagree. I think mumsnettowers should be incredibly proud of allowing that space.

FigRollsAlly · 07/07/2022 09:54

It’s fear of losing advertisers mainly. TRAs are very good at threatening and shaming companies who don’t toe the line so this board is a compromise between cold, hard economic realism and principles.

Fear is a very powerful emotion unfortunately, which is what makes what Maya and JKR have done so amazing
