Just posted on Twitter. The usual suspects are all over the replies, obviously, so give her some support if you can—but there's a surprising amount of balance. Seems to me that the scales have finally started to tip.

It was always going to be sunlight.

---WOMEN OF THE WORLD! We are being stripped of our rights over our bodies, our lives and even of our name! They don’t call us “women” anymore; they call us “birthing people” or “menstruators”, and even “people with vaginas”!
Don’t let them erase you! Every human on earth owes you!---

It's got 37k likes now. More and more people are saying no to this ideology.

MangyInseam · 04/07/2022 21:02

The "inclusive" thing is interesting. Because if you used the same logic for everything, the result would be completely bonkers.

What should be obvious is that inclusivity is a positive value in some cases, but not always, and you need to look at the justifications or argument or situation to decide which applies in a particular instance.

I really wonder if part of the reasons so many people struggle with this is that they are learning, from the wider culture, from school, that inclusivity functions as a universal principle? I've seen a ton of mission statements or vision statements for example that list inclusivity as one of their moving principles. Which is actually bollocks 99% of the time, they may try and include everyone within a certain group but they still draw lines that relate to their function.

Imagine being in Bette Midler’s mentions trying to tell her about womaning.

For shame, people.

TheGoogleMum · 04/07/2022 20:58

Pleased that these 2 wonderful ladies can see what's happening and are willing to speak the truth

Terfin’ USA 👍

Brilliant Grin

WarriorN · 04/07/2022 20:53

Oh I missed this!

Michael random says: I wasn’t explaining menstruation, but I was trying to discuss language

Hadley: No, you were telling Bette Midler that you - Michael - know better than her about who menstruates. Have a look at yourself, take a deep breath, then go watch Beaches

samsalmon · 04/07/2022 20:53

Terfin’ USA 👍

WeeBisom · 04/07/2022 20:52

While this is great, I'm still shaking my head at the fact that it's apparently controversial to say that it's erasure to call women 'menstruators' and 'birthing people'. Women really are expected to just shut up and accept any old shit, aren't they? There's such outrage at women expressing upset at being called names they don't want to be called...apparently it's not 'inclusive' or 'kind'.

WarriorN · 04/07/2022 20:52

I think I'll watch beaches tomorrow from my covid sick bed.

PearlClutch · 04/07/2022 20:51

Just waiting for Joan Jett.

WarriorN · 04/07/2022 20:51

This is fun! Go Hadders!

Are we able to start a GC playlist yet??

PearlClutch · 04/07/2022 20:45

'Bette' trending at #7 has 12.9k tweets.

This is big news. Gay icon, leftwing, hugely famous, 2 million followers ... hold on tight, wims, I think the US is waking up ...

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/07/2022 20:44

I bloody love Macy Gray. I Try is on rotation right now!

BootsAndRoots · 04/07/2022 20:44

The year is 2022, and people are angry over the statement "women give birth".

achillestoes · 04/07/2022 20:40

That is some top terfing.

WarriorN · 04/07/2022 20:39

Dammit, missed the funnier tweet!

WarriorN · 04/07/2022 20:38

Macy Gray is trending and the posts are overwhelmingly positive!

Except from Paul in Derby.

No death threats? I saw earnest women trying to re-educate her using the usual “I used to think like you till I found genderjesus!” lines. A distinct shortage of males threatening to murder all her relatives but I suppose it’s early days.

ThickCutSteakChips · 04/07/2022 20:31

None of the usual suspects have posted about this on Twitter at all. I guess they are trying to avoid the Streisand Effect! Unfortunately for them, 'Bette' is trending....

PearlClutch · 04/07/2022 20:29

Is this the first high profile US woman to speak out on the issue?

FireFlyBoogaloo · 04/07/2022 20:04

Bernadettebleu · 04/07/2022 19:56

Really really hope she doesn’t tweet a grovelling apology thanking the woke bullies for educating her and saying that she’ll do better.

I doubt it. This is the current ratio.

Much as I would have had more respect for this tweet a year ago, I think GC women have laid enough groundwork and shifted the conversation back to where people feel safer to speak up.

It's very obvious which way the wind is blowing.

Similarly relieved to see what she posted!

nepeta · 04/07/2022 20:00

Inclusive is often used wrong. It's not inclusive to have male-born people in women's sports because women's sports exist for the purpose of including women fairly in sports, i.e., separate from male-bodied people. And Paralympics are a way to include individuals who have disabilities in sports in a fair way and so on. Often real inclusiveness requires having relevant boundaries and keeping them.

And this new inclusive language about female sex both ridicules us and invalidates our embodied gender definitions and also will ultimately make it very hard to even work for issues which are sex-based, including fighting against FGM, sex-selective abortions, sexual trafficking etc.

It's just more of that 'be kind' propaganda.
