Single-sex lavatories to be mandatory in all new public buildings

I really like the phrase “forced sharing” - I think we should use it more often as it sums up the lack of consent in shared facilities - unlike the neutral sounding 'gender neutral' .

Anyway, good news - I think this is building something that was initially announced by Robert Jenrick last year but got a bit lost after his demotion:

"New office buildings, schools, hospitals and entertainment venues must have separate male and female lavatories, ministers will declare this week, in a move to rein in the “forced sharing” of gender-neutral facilities.

The Telegraph understands that the Government will formally announce that it is acting to prevent non-residential buildings from being built solely with “universal” lavatories. The move will involve changes to building regulations and planning guidance.

The plans, being spearheaded by Kemi Badenoch, the equalities minister, were quietly approved by ministers last month after Mrs Badenoch was warned that some children were avoiding using lavatories at school because they only had access to gender-neutral facilities.

Mrs Badenoch has insisted that it is both legal and “important” to provide single-sex spaces for men and women."

If we could replace Boris with Kemi I'd be a very happy woman.

This is a very good point, Tasteful. It took time, in the nineteenth century, for women to gain public toilets — before that, they could only go out for as long as their bladder allowed. But once achieved, that right was never questioned.

Until very recently, when it has been suddenly challenged and is now being withdrawn.

Most people oppose this, if asked. But most have not been asked and don’t realise single-sex rights are being abolished without any change in the law.

This new ruling will be a big help, as long as it is followed. Big thank-you to Kemi Badenoch and Robert Jenrick.

(And how I long for the day when I can praise Labour politicians again.)

This is the key point. But the point you missed was that women fought so hard against this because it basically imprisoned them in their homes.
before women had access to public toilets they could only go out for limited periods between loo breaks or to the homes of other people or “suitable” places women were supposed to meet that did provide a facility or 2.
mean revisited women getting rights to public toilets all the way…because the rights gave women freedom. It meant they could work outside the home. They could frequent public places . They could spend a whole day outside at their own free will and self determination.

removing womens single sexed toilets is removing our freedoms to go about our business freely for longer than the period between 2 loos breaks.

Either men and women who are trying to desex toilets are stupid not to realise it or are absolutely aware of what they doing. Sure, not all women will object or refuse to use toilets. But if we make toilets unpleasant a large proportion of women will change their behaviours back to the 19th century. They’ll avoid using the toilet, drink less…and gradually return to not going out for longer than they can hold their bladder for.

I guess planes are also out of the question… now I see why they say “travel broadens the mind”

I travelled a lot by plane. I spent 30-40% of my nights away from home in the last years before I retired. I typically was on 40 plus flights a year if you include transfers

I can tell you that I avoided using the plane loos as much as possible. I’d not drink too much on flights and go to loo immediately before boarding and find loo as soon as I disembarked . For the airports I used regularly I knew where nearest rest rooms were to the gates. I also knew the quietest and cleanest loos in the terminals

on longer haul flights I’d wait until I saw an air stewardess go in to clean ( what a lovely glamorous job they have cleaning up after people who seem not to be able to pee into a toilet and then clean up after themselves🤢). If that wasn’t possible id either wait until some other ( less clued up) women had gone in before me, or ask the stewardess to clean it before I used.
it was bloody awful. Even in first class - though there stewards would at least try to clean the seats between each visit.

for long hauls I never changed my clothing on board for fear of dragging clothes into the piss on the floor or worse.

I used a lot of hygienic wet wipes I always carried with me . And the first thing I did when getting to hotel or home was take a shower.

it is disgusting. I think planes (and trains) should have separate toilets but in terms of passenger number outside of holiday destinations men far exceed women so it would cause issues with queues when for safety people need to remain seated ideally.

It is a perk of retiring that I don’t ever have to go on an airplane again. Ever. Between that loo shit, delays, being treated like cattle, more delays, admin errors with tickets and seat reservations I’m done.

I would like to think somebody is reading this board!

Well if somebody is reading this board, please have a word with Priti Patel and get her to put a stop to the gender neutral nonsense in the new build for her department.

Dissenters were dismissed with "gender neutral is the way forward" 🙄and are pretty unhappy.

SallyLockheart · 04/07/2022 19:50

I think somebody is very aware that women's toilets are being appropriated to be unisex toilets leaving men's toilets are they are.

Dinoteeth · 04/07/2022 19:48

So that would mean the male toilets could become unisex but not the female

To be fair that makes perfect sense to me. And I can see sport going the same way an 'open' category and a 'female' category.

SallyLockheart · 04/07/2022 19:30

just looked at sky news. after the headline it says

"Separate unisex or universal toilets should be provided if there is space but should not come at the expense of female toilets"

Equalities Minister Kemi Badenoch said " it is vital that women feel safe and comfortable when using public facilities, and that their needs are respected"

So very clear as to the reasons why women should have single sex facilities. This is for new buildings but it may help anyone wishing to challenge women's toilets that have been changed to unisex under the EA.

I have recently had to implement single user gender neutral toilets in a building because I was instructed to by company (public sector) policy.

Does this mean that those type (single room, floor to ceiling walls, proper door and hand wash contained within) will no longer be permitted or just that we have to provide single sex as well? Because it's going to be quite easy to reverse if it's "as well" but will be almost impossible if it's "only single sex allowed"...

Fairly easy to convert those type to single sex. Change the sign on the doors say their is a line of 8 of them, make the first 4 male and the next 4 female.

But I do not the legislation is referring to new buildings not retrospective fitting in old buildings. However it should stop more building being converted.

Musomama1 · 04/07/2022 15:40

Yep, for those that don't do 'exclusion', well you do either way and this ruling reflects that. Include males and you start excluding many females.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/07/2022 14:24

This is good news let's not derail it.

Is that a pun? Grin I quite agree

Artichokeleaves · 04/07/2022 14:03

Again: in small words.

What are we going to do with the uterus having people who cannot access mixed sex spaces?

Should they lose access to anything so that penis having people can take their preferred choice of access from all the facilities?

JazzyBBG · 04/07/2022 12:09

This is good news let's not derail it.

I work in an industry where it has been quietly forced in - mainly because it's cheaper for the landlord or developer. Really glad to see common sense prevail.

RufusthefIoraImissingreindeer · 04/07/2022 11:49

Maybe you should have coherent arguments

You go first

Unless 'trains' is your idea of a coherent argument, which would explain a lot

Ohnohedident · 04/07/2022 11:30

@antifascist the issue is; if you withdraw the social convention that men dont go in to womens loos/changing rooms you will end up with those spaces becoming unsafe for women, who will then be forced to self exculde from whatever service, space in society that was previously available.

Does that explain it for you? do I need to put it in simpler language?
Or is it the concept that women deserve equality on their own terms that is perplexing you?

Datun · 04/07/2022 11:17

antifascist · 04/07/2022 09:54

Maybe you should have coherent arguments.

Are the issues that women have to use men's facilities, that gender neutral toilets are inadequate in construction, or that you are fixated on trans people using women-only facilities?

This would almost be funny, if it wasn't so sad. You can't even see it.

Women don't need 'coherent arguments'.

The answer is no.

Get used to it.

I really hope so. Our govt dept is attempting to force sharing on staff at a new premises being built at the moment.

In a meeting to discuss the plans with staff about a third of the questions were about the gender neutral toilets, mostly negative views. There will be no single sex provision at all anywhere in the building, not even public areas.

I hope Kemi's guidance reaches them in time - there are a lot of ppl unhappy about it; I suspect the shared 'corridor' and odours may be the main concerns but i haven't yet canvassed for opinion widely.

That was in response to earlier post from developer/architect working on a govt building.

RoyalCorgi · 04/07/2022 11:12

Maybe you should have coherent arguments.

Why is it so important to you? Why are you desperate for men and women to share toilets when most women would prefer them to be single-sex?

Well the arguments must be pretty coherent given that more and more people and organisations are listening to, and acting on them.

RudsyFarmer · 04/07/2022 11:03

The only positive about sharing toilet facilities is I can accompany my primary school DSs into the toilet and keep them safe. For that I am grateful.

Why is anyone so keen on gender neutral toilets anyway? What’s the big deal about women wanting a space for themselves? How does it even affect you?

It all follows from the one big central lie that if a person says 'I identify as ...' they literally become that thing. Except if we're talking about race, ethnicity, disability, or anything that requires any objective proof that you have the criteria for membership. But obviously Hmm sex doesn't fall into that last group, so we're fine. Any male person can say 'I identify as a woman' and they actually are a woman. Amazing stuff. So excluding them from women's facilities, services, scholarships, women-only shortlists, women's officer posts etc etc is just as bad as excluding any other group of women would be - black women, lesbians, disabled women, you get the idea.

Uppity women saying 'No' is hateful because it makes the male-bodied women sad. (Oddly, it's also sad because it makes some of the male-bodied, both men and women, hateful.)

OnlyTheBravest · 04/07/2022 10:48

@antifascist Most women limit fluid intake when travelling by train to avoid using the train facilities. Many opt to use the single sex facilities on platforms instead.

Airplanes are safer to use as only one person can be using the toilet and it is in close proximity to other passengers/flight attendants.

I certainly have no issue with gender neutral toilets in small businesses but when there is space for more than one there should be single and gender neutral toilets offered.

Did you read @LooksLikeADuck posts, can you really not see why single facilities divided by sex are preferred where clothing is being removed.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/07/2022 10:12

Establishing the social norm that women have a right to their own spaces does in fact do quite a lot to stop perverts who want to invade those spaces... the perverts have got bold lately because the social norm has been eroded.

I agree.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/07/2022 10:11

Yes I travel by train/plane/coach etc, I would object if a man came into the single person loo though. And yes, they're often not very nice on trains.
