UK students more anti-free speech than ever: cultural socialism

I stumbled across this article:

unherd.com/thepost/britains-students-will-be-woke-forever/

I'm not sure I understand what is meant (or the implications) by the phrase 'cultural socialism.' If anyone can explain this, I'd be obliged.

I always find that those who refuse to read or discuss anything from a source to be absolutely the people who should be wary of way they try to silence discussion.

Some posters are very quick with dismissing any article from particular news services. Hilariously; all it does is reinforce the suspicion they are not as well informed as they like to portray themselves.

How can you be informed if you refuse to read / listen to sources because of your own deep prejudices? The hypocrisy is so clear.

That tendency was started by Donald J. Trump, who went on to become 45th President of the United States.

A few things were picked-up by the US and UK Left from 'the Donald' - well he had been a registered Democrat supporter and donator (2001-2009).

  1. Dismissing any article or news report from selected news services. CNN was a favourite source to attract his ire.
  2. Booing/hissing journalists. This was a key 'feature' of the 'Trumpsters', prior to the November 2016 Presidential Election. But Corbyn's supporters wholesale-lifted the Trumpsters tactic and began booing and hissing at journalists. Over the following four years Trumpster and Corbyn supporters were in absolute lock-step with their attitude to what they both called the 'MSM' (Mainstream Media).
Corbyn supporters boo BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg

Later that very June, the reason why journalists and in particular Laura Kuenssberg had been abused by Corbyn supporters became clear, when she reported that Corbyn's office had deliberately sabotaged the official Labour Party Remain Campaign (Corbyn office 'sabotaged' EU Remain campaign - sources). Corbyn, with the by-then-deceased Tony Benn MP and union leader Joe Gormley were dedicated Europhobes going back decades, so it was no surprise that Corbyn supporters took umbrage at the media when it was so focused on Corbyn, and his supporters, tacit support for Leave. Strangely-enough, Donald Trump expressed pro-Leave sentiments regularly.

Six years on from leaving office and being chucked-off Twitter, we can see that Trump's legacy is now cemented-in through the form of political dialogue being expressed online. The American Right adopted the 'Trump Way' but so too did the US Left. In the UK, the Left adopted Trump's online mannerisms, though the Right appears to have declined - I don't think they really like Americans!

Antifascist. You will have to tell me which of the news outlets linked above: The Guardian and BBC, are not approved by yourself.

antifascist

The problem with any movement that has an "anti" prefix is that it defines itself in terms of the very thing it purports to stand against. The two become inseparable; each a side of the same coin.

Pluvia · 03/07/2022 21:51

I didn't hear him say anything like that in the hour-long interview. Please provide evidence — direct quotes from his work, not your opinion of something he might or might not have said — to back up your argument. Not some third-party commentary on his work and no cleverly edited half-sentences. Go back to Douglas Murray's own words and evidence what you say. I will happily debate it with you when you go back to the source. I have a few hours free over the next few days to read DM fairly extensively if required. Not a task I relish, but I will do it.

Otherwise you're coming over like the people who keep saying JKR's transphobic but have never read a word she's written on women's rights.

He’s an out and out great replacement theory fascist posting about the scary Muslims taking over our white Christian west . He’s antisemitic too. Just because he went to Eton and writes fir the Spectator doesn’t make those views acceptable to me. I understand that some on here are fans..

gay fascists are still fascists.

I knew I was living dangerously, Antifascist, so help me out. Listen to that Douglas Murray podcast and make a note of every fascist thing he says and then list them here. When I say fascist, I mean fascist as in ultra-right-totalitarian, not just something I don't agree with.

Come on, do a member of the Labour Party a favour and highlight the fascism, so I may see the error of my ways. You are the one who sees stuff the rest of us miss. Help us.

Yes, Douglas Murray, practically Hitler.

antifascist · 03/07/2022 21:12

Great posting Douglas Murray now. For those of you who aren’t fascists you do find people who propagate the great replacement theory very appealing

AlienatedChildGrown · 03/07/2022 21:05

If we’re allowed to take (or make up) terms and claim people we don’t agree with us are those words then I hereby announce there’s a new set of people in town.

The TITs

Tediously Intolerant Totalitarian(s)

These people live where the two pointy bits of the political horseshoe hang about. And tend to play a game of pretending all the people in the hoopy part of the horseshoe are Radicals and Extremists. What kind of Radical and/or Extremist can change depending on what’s most useful to derail an on-topic conversation at any given time.

They are easily identified by being deliberately disinterested if the noun immediately after the Radical doesn’t fit you.

Hence, to a TIT I am a T*RF. It doesn’t matter that I’m not a feminist. Nor that I happily worked with, for, alongside and socialised with Transpeople in considerable numbers before half of them were even alive. I am also a Right Wing Extremist. Despite only ever having voted for Labour, with the SDP manifesto as having the most points that match my views out of all available manifestos.

From this point forward I will play by the same rules. My new shiny placard (haven’t had one since the Public Order Act march in 1980 something, so this is quite exciting) is two sided and is emblazoned with

Stop Being A TIT !

And

TITs Out !

I admit the second side is entirely distraction technique deployed to disarm the blokes used as muscle in the TITs army. They won’t be thumping us if looking around hopefully every time they walk past a placard. At least half of the Gender & Politically Pious army on twitter will be unable to focus on dogpiling if #TITs keep flashing in their mentions.

This is my biggest contribution to feminism since my little, cartoony, child friendly penis sticker. Hey, it’s the thought that counts. 😬

Really? Did I imagine Ferring donated £100K to the Lib Dems? No, it happened:

Honestly, Antifascist, I thought you were the one who knows everything. Do we actually know more than you?

That’s an interesting post. An unholy alliance of Swampy and Richie Rich?

MangyInseam · 03/07/2022 19:59

And honestly, most people are pretty moderate. Even American people who vote Republican are pretty moderate, they aren't socialists or fascists, they just want good jobs and a reasonable life where they can educate their kids and there will e good jobs for them.

When I was about 15 years old if I found myself losing an argument - which was often - I would shout “fascist” or “racist” at those I was arguing with, then sit with a self-satisfied look on my face as if I’d done something clever.

I grew out of it.

Antifascist, you do talk an absolute steaming pile of rubbish.

Nonetheless happy to debate.

That key snag, explaining how prominent leftist women like Linda Bellos are now suddenly allied to a fascist cause, if not apparently being fascist themselves, is a tough prospect. Organisations like A Woman's Place in the UK and WoLF (the Women's Liberation Front) are recognised as distinctly leftist. The new campaign group - Lesbians United is out-and-out leftist.

But I'm willing to read any explanation, however absurd, in an effort to understand this effort to brand leftists as being fascists. Trying to present those who oppose lesbophobia and challenge efforts to reduce women's rights as fascist might get a little footnote in the political history of the Left, but I doubt it will be a complimentary note.

Gender ideology is a boon to Big Pharma and threat to parental rights

‘I am all agog at learning of how many left lesbians and women have suddenly become radicalised far right extremists over the past few years.’

Relative to the far left, everyone’s a radicalised right wing extremist. You’d almost think...

This is one that political scientists have yet to fathom.

Just how is it so many left-wing women apparently became far-right in such a short time? And yet they don't spout or publish far-right material, there's no evidence that they are funded by the far right, and indeed the 'far-right' in the UK doesn't rightly exist to any substantial degree. It's going to be a struggle to find any 'T2rfs' in Combat 18.

A more likely explanation is that the effort to try to associate those opposed to the efforts to remove women-and-girls safeguarding protections and those opposed to 'transing-away-the-gay' plus those opposed to US-based BigPharma (which profits hugely from the New Homophobia movement) are labelled as 'far-right' in an effort to split the Left and try to limit the damage that could be inflicted on US corporations.

The LibDems took a huge donation from BigPharma and this could explain their commitment. Many who profess to be 'leftist' in the US and UK are hugely pro-corporate and dedicated to globalism; a great example being the rioting in Portland and Seattle in 2020 which left corporate headquarters offices relatively untouched, but saw thousands of small businesses with insufficient insurance (often Black-owned) torched and forced-out-of-business.

Big global corporations, particularly the polluting ones, get a pretty easy ride from the 'modern' Left these days. Even so-called climate protesters will happily glue themselves to a painting in a national art gallery rather than confront the key shareholders of strip-mining companies or those building coal-fired power stations.

We might living in times when the Left in the US and UK are so well aligned with the needs of BigPharma and global corporate concerns that it shouldn't come as a surprise when left-leaning women get accused of being 'fascists' or 'literal Nazi's' in an effort to try to get them to shut-up.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 03/07/2022 12:50

leveraging the public perception that "socialism = dictatorship = gulags = bad" to associate the same instinctive fear and loathing with "identity politics".

I wonder if the public has a similar set of perceptions around fascism, concentration/rehabilitation camps, the enforcement of single public narratives (via mainstream or social media) and what tends to be described as hyper-individualism that wholly relies upon outsourcing externalities of various social evils onto the individual that has few protections?

I don't know. I've no idea if those surveys or assessments have been done. I know that a lot of times 'socialism' tends to be discussed in US terms rather than what it means in the UK. As cultural marxism seems to be a phrase that originated in the US I wonder if all of this is more of an expression of non-UK systems? That said, it's quite obvious at times that people don't understand the different rights and protections people have in the UK that aren't present in the US (e.g., maternity leave and pay).

MangyInseam · 03/07/2022 12:46

Well I imagine the issue is that anytime anyone tries to give a name to that particular ideology, someone comes along and tries to dispute the ideology even exists by diputing the name. Some have (accuratly, it should be said) pointed out that some elements are pretty contrary to Marx, so perhaps the author felt that a somewhat more generic category would be better.

Identity politics is much the same thing but doesn't always get at the fact that there is a connection to other ideas and systems and that it's conclusions grow out of those ways of thinking.

I've heard a few other attempts at naming it, but none have really caught on.

Fifteentoes · 03/07/2022 12:40

That's a terrible article and not much worth bothering with, but as far as I can tell "cultural socialism" is just a new name for "cultural marxism" - which is what the right call any attempt to fight for the rights of minorities, or to point out that society is structured in ways that favour some groups over others, leveraging the public perception that "socialism = dictatorship = gulags = bad" to associate the same instinctive fear and loathing with "identity politics".

Not many people identify as marxists any more, but plenty still do as socialists, so the author probably feels that's a better way to get the point across.

It works pretty well. Just look at mumsnet.

I will repeat what I said on another thread.
"Antifascist" doesn't mean anti fascist. It means "anti any opinion I don't agree with because any one who doesn't agree with me is so obviously wrong and evil"

Like this bunch of thugs.
