Gender change data to be scrutinised

Statement by Javid. It is S22 but also the Order is for 5 years:

questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-statements/detail/2022-06-30/hcws170

"the Order will expire after a period of 5 years which is the maximum amount of time that we believe the project will take"

And it's for the Cass Review:

"This statutory instrument will make a minor change under the Gender Recognition Act (GRA) 2004 in order to facilitate the invaluable research being undertaken as part of Dr Hilary Cass Independent review of gender identity services for children and young people (the Cass Revieww_)"

So is it going to take that long, or is this a related project?

I've had a look at DD's and my NHS numbers. They start and finish with different digits and there is no sign of our DoB's in them.

They are just 10 digit numbers, which I have only consciously had to use to re-register at our dentist and for the NHS/Covid app.

I have a hazy recollection that I USED to have a "number" with 5 letters and 3 numbers in it, but that was decades ago.

The format changed in 1995, I believe, or thereabouts.

I meant to add that I was joking, though it's hard to tell these days...

TheBiologyStupid · 30/06/2022 19:04

And what about non-binary patients? Do they get a special marker?

Perhaps their NHS number ends in a zero, OneBook!

Humbolt · 30/06/2022 18:47

I wonder what the retention schedules are like for NHS records of people who have changed their NHS 'identity'? I'm hoping there have been robust record-keeping practices so that they can join the dots. It's quite a huge data protection minefield. Will they contact each individual for consent or are our health records usually available to scrutinise by academics for research purposes?

Thingybob · 30/06/2022 18:31

I've been waiting all day to see how Mermaids and all the other trans organisations would respond to this significant development. So far it's been radio silence from them all

ResisterRex · 30/06/2022 17:43

Covered in the Mail, in quite a long article:

RedToothBrush · 30/06/2022 16:29

Grown ups have stepped up and said 'hang on we should do some research on this, and shouldn't hide it by having different NHS numbers which prevent follow up studies'.

And all people can do is refer to which political party they belong to?

FFS, that ideological tribal crap is one of the reasons why we are in this mess in the first place.

Precisely because people were silenced for not towing party line or following the activist line (sorry lobby group).

We need people with clear heads to look at this objectively and actually value science. This isn't something that should be politically aligned. We should do it as default, if we value actually doing the best by kids / trans people / vulnerable adults / women / any other group of collective humans you might wish to mention.

The tribalism isn't helping anyone who needs it.

He's a tory. So no.

I'm a bit perplexed about why those who have transitioned are given a new NHS number, that's crazy.

"I'm a bit perplexed about why those who have transitioned are given a new NHS number, that's crazy."
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere one of the digits of your number indicates your sex, but I've just searched and can't find any reference to that.

"He's a tory. So no."
No, he's not excellent because he's a Tory; or no, no embarrassment to us as the next Prime Minister because he's a Tory?

Labour haven't exactly covered themselves in glory here. And without the fifty or so seats they used to get from Scotland prior to the rise of the SNP, there's going to need to be some pretty exceptional circumstances for them to get a majority again. The next Prime Minister is probably going to be another Tory, so you might just have to grit your teeth on that one.

Fucking WHAT

God, I have a 5yo and 3yo. My 3yo cries that she can't wear her Spider-Girl outfit to nursery every day.

It doesn't matter what they find. Follow ups are essential for individuals and research purposes. It is absolutely appalling, should be criminal, that it has not been happening.

Manderleyagain · 30/06/2022 10:10

Would a patient who wanted a more sensible pragmatic & safe approach get it? If I transitioned and wanted my gp record to show that I shld be known by new pronouns & generally treated as the opposite sex in human interaction (setting aside debates about what it means to be treated as a mam for a minute), but also wanted my records to have my whole medical history and clearly show I am female because that's needed & safe - would they have a way of doing that? Is it all or nothing?

As far as I recall, the NHS records have sections for both biological sex and gender identity,. So yes, both can be recorded, but for unknown reasons, the NHS are only recording by the latter - gender identity.

Helleofabore Did you look at the cohort stats - 6% (so 36) in the study were under 5!

Fucking WHAT

Helleofabore · 30/06/2022 12:05

madcats I really did skim as I am trying to do work at the same time. 36? Fuck!

Mind you, if they all desist that would also be worthy to note too. But grim, grim, grim!

Luxa · 30/06/2022 11:56

Good work, Saj.

So he's a Tory? Big deal. Doesn't automatically make him public enemy number 1. He is an individual.

Cailin66 · 30/06/2022 11:48

PermanentTemporary · 30/06/2022 07:04

Hmm. If they go looking for 'harm' they are likely to find it. They should be studying outcomes, positive and negative. I'm glad that the work will be done though.

What makes you think it's about looking for harm. In the article it said it's about looking at more data to produce more robust evidence on treatment. So proper evidence based treatment.

Madcats · 30/06/2022 11:42

Helleofabore · 30/06/2022 11:36

Dr Cass did specify that there were ongoing studies being undertaken in this nature so these studies were known to have been instigated. So, I expect they have been built into the timeline surely.

As to what is coming out supposedly in Summer?? It must have always been another 'interim' style document that was then going to require confirmation or follow up to the research.

The Australian and New Zealand Pyschiatrists wrote that they had studies and patient reviews underway too in their statement, so I wonder what that too will bring to light.

This is one of them....

bmjopen.bmj.com/content/9/11/e032151

I know that Covid restrictions would have impeded this studies progress, however, I wonder what stage it is now. And has anyone seen anything further about it...

Trans20 is a prospective cohort study based on children and adolescents first seen at the Royal Children’s Hospital Gender Service (RCHGS) between February 2017 and February 2020. Current estimates indicate the final sample size will be approximately 600. Patients and their parents complete online questionnaires prior to the first appointment with RCHGS and regularly thereafter as part of routine clinical care. On discharge from RCHGS, patients are invited to continue undertaking questionnaires biennially. In this way, a naturally forming cohort study has been created. The primary outcomes include gender dysphoria, physical and mental health, schooling, family functioning and quality of life. Subgroup analyses based on factors such as gender identity, birth-assigned sex and treatment received will be performed using bivariate and multivariate modelling as appropriate, and relevant statistical methods will be applied for the repeated measures over time.

This is fucking concerning!

Trans20 is a prospective, longitudinal cohort study, with a sample comprising patients aged 3–17 years when first attending the RCHGS between February 2017 and February 2020.

3 year olds!!! Seriously grim reading that.

Either way, it seems to be totally reliant on questionnaires. I could not see them mention that they would then correlate this data against anonymised health record data. Also Michelle Tefler is involved and is hardly going to be unbiased.

TheBiologyStupid · 30/06/2022 11:25

Brilliant - about time that the medical evidence was comprehensively interrogated.

PearPickingPorky · 30/06/2022 11:04

I can only assume that as Helen Joyce has said, this seems to have been conceived as a sort of "witness protection programme". I really don't see how this level of paranoia about being "outed" is justified.

Particularly since, as soon as anyone meets this person in real life and interacts with them/speaks to them etc, their sex will be very evident, as it always is when it's not a heavily filtered headshot photo of a woman's make-up'd face painted onto a man.

This "privacy" cannot happen in the real world.

As this study is integral to the Cass review I imagine we are at least a year away from a final report which might stop children being taught these ideas in school?

At least a year away from anything resembling a final report. Longer, I should think nearer 18 months to 2 years and beyond.

I wonder if there will be a 2nd interim report until such time as there is fuller information? These timescales mean a lot in the life of a young person.

If someone is having multiple serious health interventions in pursuit of transition then it seems even more important that someone records accurately their health stats, data, history, surely?
