Anyone who goes around in life 'assigning' words to things that are already well known perfectly clear and understood concepts will be viewed as a collossal twat by everyone who has the unfortunate experience of encountering them.

So therefore I am unable to assign anyone here as a 'collossal twat' because to do so would automatically make me a 'collossal twat'. As it is already understood.

No, an observation is recorded. Like the medic who had a quick gander at my baba and informed me of the sex.

You are right about a decision not changing the reality though. As Professor Robert Winston said, your sex doesn't change. Ever. So, someone deciding to applying to be recorded as the other sex doesn't change the reality of the sex are. I think that is why it has been referred to as a legal fiction.

So you agree, that the sex of a baby already is, long before anyone decides anything. Excellent.

I’ve never implied otherwise.

@TastefulRainbowUnicorn
Finally! A person who knows what a thought process is.
However, have to say I am an actual human being (not a bot), and yes when it comes to the use of language to accurately describe tasks, I do think in a process oriented way. Years of training and all that.

AlisonDonut · 30/06/2022 23:38

Discovereads · 30/06/2022 23:34

It is decided. Don’t be silly. Decisions do not affect reality. Something is and then during the thought process after become aware of what is, you decide what it is.

No it doesn't have to be "decided". It already is, regardless of whether there's somebody there to fill in a form.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 30/06/2022 23:33

Lol. Sure, from the perspective of a neuroscientist, seeing a penis and recognising it is a “process.” And so is identifying that an object is yellow.

But neither observing a person’s sex nor recognising the colour of an object is something an actual human experiences as a “process” (unless you’re on an extremely high dose of ketamine or something, which might explain some things but then how the fuck are you typing so much?)

You are entirely ridiculous.

"It’s not an argument, it’s a fact that sexing a baby is a thought process"

Tell that to the gametes and chromosomes which determine a baby's sex.

Oh dear, another someone doesn’t know what “sexing” or “thought process” means. Hint: it doesn’t imply you can change sex.

And it matters to me because I see children being encouraged to believe that sex is merely something allocated to you by a third party, so why shouldn't they be able to change it?

Well sex has to be decided by a separate adult human being (or group) because the fetus or newborn baby is literally incapable of self-identifying their sex. You’re never realistically going to overcome that obstacle. If it’s “observed” instead of “assigned”…yep still done by another person/persons.

It’s not an argument, it’s a fact that sexing a baby is a thought process.

The baby is male or female even if there are no words to describe them.

What you are thinking of, is going through the words that you have been taught to see what one matches.

Two completely different things.

Speed has nothing to do with how thought processes work in the human brain and how they can be broken down. I could get really technical on you and go from optic nerve to each neuron but I fear that would probably confuse you.

i just wanted to highlight this one as it cracked me up. (It’s in defence of their argument that seeing what sex a baby is is a “process”.)

HipTightOnions · 30/06/2022 23:22

I think there could be an argument that the word "male" or "female" is assigned, in the sense that some kind of "choice" is exercised.

But the sex itself is not assigned: it already exists independently of the observer.

Discovereads · 30/06/2022 23:17

LK1972 · 30/06/2022 22:46

Oh FFS, how disingenuous can one get - if it doesn't matter to you if the word 'assign' is replaced by 'observed' why are you here arguing over it?

It matters to me because “assign” is a more accurate term for the process than “observe”. I’m pedantic.

It matters to you because you think that swapping assign for observe will somehow “prevent males from deciding they are females”- which it won’t. So you’re arguing that assign means all kinds of things under the sun that it doesn’t actually mean and talking about TRA conspiracies all to fuel your futile protest- which just makes you look myopic to say the least. And it’s all for nothing even if you get your way. Won’t change anything.

Transpeople will still get GRCs and still get new BCs with the M changed to F or vice versa regardless of whether the M or F on the original BC was “assigned” or “observed.”

We're back to the Blackadder episode I quoted some pages back, I think.

LK1972 · 30/06/2022 22:50

Sorry, please quote what you're talking about, with reference, if you start throwing dead cats. Which diagnostic manual, page, para. Otherwise, please fuck off

And nobody get a GRC because their sex was incorrectly observed or 'assigned'.

They get it because they have a diagnosis of gender dysphoria, not because they're 'incorrectly' sexed at birth.

Yes we’ll have you looked at the diagnostic criteria for gender dysphoria? Doesn’t sound like it.

Discovereads · 30/06/2022 22:44

LK1972 · 30/06/2022 22:37

It's like the famous 6-word amendment in Scottish Government - we were all stupid to argue over a word, but when the amendment passed it was deemed 'transphobic'. Amazing that.

Oh ONS court case - stupid, pointless quibbling over language it was till we won. Iirc the court was deemed transphobic at that point.

Enough, if these words don't matter to you, whf are you on here @Discovereads ?

Well, obviously some words matter more than other words. You have to assess on a case by case basis.

Well quite, I can imagine the headline already 'Midwife incorrectly observed woman's sex as male as a woman had a penis'. Zingy

There won’t be headlines. There aren’t any today when trans get a GRC and have their BCs changed. It’s not going to change that process in the slightest by saying sex is “assigned” to sex is “observed” at birth.
