Who the hell in adland thinks insulting or mocking the people who buy your products is a winning strategy?

Didn’t they have a Mumsnet stamp of approval at one point?

Braggiography · 30/06/2022 17:04

Maybe the longer term gains happen when people forget about said ad. I guess that depends on what the abiding, lingering feeling is towards the brand. Will vague familiarity win out over an aura of tired cringe?

Tune in next week to see what happens!

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 30/06/2022 17:00

I translate "longer term gains" as "taking responsibility for other people's work", but it's contextually dependent.

For example, if a Bigshot Marketing Guy were t tanks a brand's sales in the short term, then lots of less well paid people lower down the company might run around trying to repair the damage with things like sponsorship of community events. Then when sales improved again as a result of their actions, Bigshot Marketing Guy might say the improvement in sales was all down to his original marketing campaign.

MarshaBradyo · 30/06/2022 16:55

The pro I assume is walking into a pitch and selling a drop in sales, not like those pesky agencies that can’t the piss target audience off

or should that be ‘naysayers’

What a load of bunkum from that guy

Clymene · 30/06/2022 16:50

I wonder what the longer term gains of losing brand loyalty are? I can't fathom them but my experience is in fuddy duddy old fashioned branding where customers buying what you're flogging is pretty core.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 30/06/2022 16:49

It's the general queasy, shitty atmosphere

No, the jokes about faeces are probably in McCains next ad with Baga! Or were going to be. Envy <- not envy

Braggiography · 30/06/2022 16:41

Hm. What McCain are going to be concerned with is not principled mums doing a boycott.

It's the general queasy, shitty atmosphere having some middle aged wig-wearing drag queen making cheap sexist gags about meaty knockers in the general direction of kids, while frying up some crappy processed food product.

It's not the outrage that'll get you, McCains. It's the ew.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 30/06/2022 16:35

It's an expensive chip company. I'd actually been splashing out on McCains recently, because I liked their ads for the grants they were making to families with disabled children. I mentioned it earlier on in the thread. I'm easily influenced by advertising like that.

Let us say that I am more inclined to economise on crinkle cut oven chips than I was this time last week.

KittenKong · 30/06/2022 16:17

The do realise that people walk, find a better alternative and tell all their friends.

This is just agency bull, shining on the client that they didn’t make the wrong call, it’s the client who is wrong bla bla bla. Then they will say that the client gave them a bum steer on the brief and they signed it off, so they are the poo-poo heads, so there!

IcakethereforeIam · 30/06/2022 15:42

'Longer term gains' or in the short term our campaign might tank your business but, after we've trousered your cash...yay! How, long term? After this generation of pissed-off mums have died?

I can think of a few things that I avoid because I know they've annoyed me even if I can't remember why. I just know they've got a bad association.

Sometimes I'll take another look and discover I was misinformed. I doubt I'll bother over a chip company, I'll just spend my money elsewhere.

KittenKong · 30/06/2022 15:33

What a load of blarney.

Artichokeleaves · 30/06/2022 15:25

Ah! He identifies as this being good for sales Smile

And the very best of British luck with that Mr Greenwood.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 30/06/2022 14:18

MarshaBradyo · 30/06/2022 13:35

Or maybe the client would prefer not to spend on ads only to delete them because they can’t grasp what’s sexist to their target audience

It's okay! Paul Greenwood, Global Head of Research and Insight at We Are Social says,

But brands have to be relaxed and comfortable with that reaction; as long as you’re on the right side of the debate there will always be naysayers. In the short-term you might see a drop off in sales, but this is countered by longer-term gains.

Or perhaps we could be spared drag being used to sell us stuff, because we're sick of it? Just a thought for the advertisers?
It's popular though. Whether it's Marjorie Dawes or Baga.
Neither are sexual characters too.
Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean everyone else can't enjoy it, there's plenty of non drag adverts out there more to your taste.

I don't think I love a good spreading was meant to refer to producing spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel.

Do we need to make a list for food companies of "topics of conversation and types of humour that are linked to suppression of interest in food"?

Well going by all these "I might never eat a chip butty again" comments maybe it's doing the nation's health a favour.
Let's just hope stuff like lettuce doesn't start featuring drag queens next or you're screwed 😂
Air, anyone?
Dust?!
(Dammit, just realised that dust sketch is another drag act - no dust either then! 😁 )

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 30/06/2022 13:31

Don't you worry, I filled up on chocolate biscuits afterwards, instead.

As I said before, I find I like to keep food and sex separate.

"Lettuce"

You're not far off, I have been mooching around We Are Social's website and found this:

Now, we all know that queers are better than straights at everything. Cowboy hats. The act of longing. Throwing weddings. Salad…

it’s ok to piss people off. Just as long as you’re pissing off the right people

Who is it they're aiming this ad at, then? Who are McCain's main customers, buying kiddy chip-related products?

I'm going to guess mothers.

Here we are, McCain. This is your focus group, us middle aged women with 'knockers' have seen your ad. Here's our general response:

Fuck off.

Brilliant 😀

I concur. I hope the CD and marketing manager get it from
someone up higher

Finally, someone is treating my plight with the gravity it deserves. Thank you, Rufus. Never have I ever passed up a chip butty before, until last night. I had to eat my gorgeous chips without any bread whatsoever. Just couldn't stomach adding the slices in after that video.
Sad

I read that as 'gravy' in the first sentence, btw.

I don't think I want to eat chip butties ever again after that

You are still assuming that we all take our children to pantomimes and so can be assumed to have consented en masse to the type of innuendo used in pantomime.

As we already covered why such an argument was absolute tosh, the only conclusion I can draw is that you didn't read our replies.

Further, someone told you that good pantomimes use different jokes in the evening performances and the daytime performances, because they draw difference audiences. Note that this McCains ad is coming up during videos for children on Youtube Kids, in the morning.

No, I was directly adressing someone who appears to have no problem with taking their kids to pantomime.
