If I was to ‘live as a man’ from tomorrow, what would I do?

I don’t pretend to be an expert in trans issues but I am fascinated by how society drives gendered behaviour.

I believe anyone wanting to change gender would normally ‘live’ as the opposite gender for a while, or even permanently. But what does that mean? What would I need to do to live as a man? I’m guessing use male facilities but anything else? Grow a beard? Plenty of men are clean shaven.

I don’t wear dresses or skirts or have long hair, so why do trans females sometimes think this is part of living as a woman?

Relinquish yourself of any family mental load.

THIS!!!S

and the hobby

I don't understand how any of those things are things that would be proof of living as a man.
If you went to a gender clinic and said 'I've been living as a man by tracking my periods and losing my friends' they would probably look at you slightly oddly.
Of course, it makes as much sense as 'I've been living as a man by getting tattoos' I suppose.

Thelnebriati · 27/06/2022 15:48

Your partner may join a trans widower group and make fun of you.

Suuuure, that happens. The threads are right here on Mumsnet for everyone to see.

LaughingPriest · 27/06/2022 15:46

You would go see your GP and get told you can see a specialist in 18 weeks as per the NHS rules but they will chortle that its probably going to be 5 years before you hear back.

How is this 'living as a man'? Do men do this?
It doesn't make sense. This is something that would be tested to see if someone has gender dysphoria? Or did you misunderstand the question?

First of all you would lose many of your friends, especially if they are the ones that think being trans is trendy. You may lose your job eventually, definitely any promotions. Your partner may join a trans widower group and make fun of you. You would go see your GP and get told you can see a specialist in 18 weeks as per the NHS rules but they will chortle that its probably going to be 5 years before you hear back. You may notice you are targetted more for abuse and violence in the street. Some people will just keeop calling you 'Miss' because they're bullies. You will have to track your own gyni schedule because the NHS will drop you from their records. If you;d been younger you may have been able to have PBs but only the most suicidal 5-10% are allowed those. And people will constantly tell you that you are really just a lesbian even though ( assumption here ) you are still attracted to men.

Taking everyone's obsession with poo, your farts will smell less. Yes, scientific fact

What a load of rubbish.

Where are all these trans widower groups set up by men? Where is the huge influx of heterosexual women transitioning to be men in middle age?

Come to think of it, why don’t you tell us the age profile of FTM transitioners and then break it down by sexuality? What proportion of FTM transitioners are attracted to men?

If you knowingly have your sex marker on NHS records changed, whose responsibility is it if you don’t get invited to gynae screenings any more?

Where is this mass abuse and violence in the street of transmen? We normally get told it’s TW who are being abused.

This is all some kind of guilt trip made up fantasy.

I haven't RTT so I'm likely repeating someone but as a man you MUST absolutely take to Twitter exclaim you have 'NO IDEA why women are so upset about x, y and z' then proceed to block anyone who explains x, y and z to you so that you can a) talk about how MEAN and BIGOTED these women are and b) exclaim again how you have NO IDEA why women are so upset. (This scenario as pointed out by other women on twitter first - I am poaching it as it is simply what happens almost daily).

I think this is how you 'man properly' online.

I would get up and have a quick shower, whack on basically the same outfit every day and go to work.
How liberating vs having to wash and dry hair, apply makeup, dress in lots of different styles, accessorise etc. It’s such a bloody waste of brain power (and yet I do it every day)

TBF you don't HAVE to do that as a woman. I agree you may well get judged differently than a man would, but <<shrug>> who cares as long as the people you care about love you?
I'm a woman and have short hair that needs no real attention, I don't wear make-up, am usually to be found dressed in joggers and a vest or jumper, only put on jewellery if I feel like it etc. I still have friends and my family and household still speak to me.

To 'live as a man' I suppose one would need to get paid more for doing the same job, take up space on pavements and tube seats, and assume women are going to defer to you on narrow pavements.

Abhannmor · 27/06/2022 10:29

To come back to the OP. If you are 50 + you could visit your GP and ask for PSA test. Tell then you are up and down to the loo all night like a fiddler's elbow. Such larks.

I’m single and child free so I’m not sure my actions would be different.

but the world I have to deal with would be. I was seated next to a manspreader yesterday. Argh.

I used to be able to cross my legs twice over like elastic bands. But now I can't. Further , I often extend the left one slightly to the side to get relief from pain in hips. Sorry.

I have short hair.
I don’t wear dresses or heals.
I have hobbies that i don’t shut up about (some would consider them ‘male hobbies).
I take my phone to the loo when I’m taking a shit.
I love a pint of Guinness

The only thing I don’t have is a beard 🤣

I’m very much a woman, wouldn’t want to be a man but I guess it would be interesting to be one for a day.

Me too but, just for one-upmanship, I got a pretty nifty beard too: thanks menopause 🙄Actually make it 15 all: I don't like Guinness.

I'm not a man either but I'm pretty sure if gender ideology had been a thing when I was a kid, me and my football season ticket would have been a prime target for transition 😡

Your first mistake was to ask the opinion of women, your second would be to actually listen.

Brilliant 😭

Morning routine: shit, shower and shave.

In that Taylor Swift video a man looking after his child being praised by all and sundry (but especially women) was the part most true to life for me.

RoyKentsChestHair · 26/06/2022 19:23

On a family day out you’d need to not bother getting anyone but yourself dressed, don’t think about packing a bag with essentials for your children and then go and sit in the car impatiently moaning about why it’s taking everyone else so long to get ready to go.

Ah, so it’s not just my DH who does this?!🤣

CandyLeBonBon · 27/06/2022 03:17

Oh and barbecue six shop bought burgers, and declare you have 'made dinner' having made sure that everyone else bought and prepared everything else to accompany it.

CandyLeBonBon · 27/06/2022 03:11

Get a bike, sone Lycra shorts, have a mid life crisis and an affair and tell me it's my fault because I spent too much time with the kids!

Pixiedust1234 · 27/06/2022 02:52

Interesting concept.

My first thought was fart. A lot. Loudly. Sometimes giggle at the smellest ones especially when a duvet is involved.
Second thought was putting the TV on immediately, then walk out the room, sometimes for hours.
Third was never having to clean or pick up after yourself.

Be really cruel and say mean things about other people/friends but hide (your bitchiness) behind the 'banter' tag and its all a laugh and get away with it.
Make fun of those who don't suck up your 'bants' and single them out.
(Your 'banter' is your own deep held insecurities just under the surface that pop out in other ways!).

Don't take any requests from random women even if they're reasonable and polite (twatty performance dads at my campsite on Saturday I'm thinking of you). And afterwards mutter amongst yourselves that 'she's a Karen'. As her requests aren't as valid as one made by another man, and you can do what you like with YOUR kids as other people's kids don't matter.
