All the English women in a froth about a country many thousands of miles away and nothing to do with them,
What about that nasty little corner of your own country- northern Ireland- where fundamentalist protestants are blocking abortions??
What are you going to do about that??
Offer asylum?

You are partially correct - although I'm not sure that it isn't offensive assuming that everyone posting here is English (I'm not). But it is totally legal for women in Northern Ireland to cross to Great Britain and obtain an abortion - it's been going on for generations. It isn't a perfect answer, but free abortion is available to all UK citizens who meet the criteria.

There has been plenty of discussion about NI here and also Poland - and sympathy with the women affected. Some posters have offered help and donations to affected women. What makes you think we haven’t or that we do t care? Or was this just an opportunity to hate on us?

As a woman, I have no country. My sisters are everywhere. We have differences but we are united by our biology.

Some states want to put in laws about travelling across state lines for abortion.

I don't think lack of access to abortion is an Asylum matter.

I think it should be alongside other violations of women’s rights and safety.

TooBigForMyBoots · 25/06/2022 13:34

I don't think lack of access to abortion is an Asylum matter. Otherwise all the women in Ireland (including NI,which is UK) would have been able to claim it until very recently.

I didn't say they had. I was responding to a specific post that suggested women could find it easier to go to another state. Going anywhere is not an option for many women.

Easier than another country!

No one has said otherwise. People are responding to the question about asylum claims.

Whilst clearly the right to an abortion is not an asylum criteria, going to another state is not an option for many women. Those who have money and insurance will go elsewhere. The poor will end up on the back streets just as they did before. Making abortion illegal does not stop abortion, it makes abortion massively unsafe for many women.

If they can’t manage to get to another state, how would they get to another country?

No, because as people have said abortion is legal in some states so they can't claim asylum from their current country as a whole.

In addition, in the UK at least, the requirements for asylum based on medical grounds are so high that I think most pregnant women would be unlikely to reach the necessary requirements

This. Abortion is legal in many states.
