But he was twenty five. Not a child. He fought for the surgery, he convinced doctors he knew himself and what he wanted. To now sue them for believing him is not really the right thing to do.

Perhaps that's the argument fir this surgery just not being allowed full stop.

Its cosmetic. The complications are horrific. Rendering healthy bodies incontinent for no order reason than to have n external appearance of something you caht ever be is just ridiculous. No one benefits from this. Ajd the after care removes any chance of a normal life for months/years. You cant work.if you have to dilate multiple times a day.

People sue for less with emergency life saving surgery. This is purely cosmetic

I'm sure he knew that his cock and balls were going to be removed. Could he possibly know how that would change his life? surely part of the point is that no one can know how that would change their life until it's done. He's lost all of his natural libido forever. I can see that some people wouldn't know that would be a result of the surgery.

He’s suing the NHS for a lot of money; money supposed to be used to treat people.

That’s why I feel little sympathy for him.

This kind of legal action isn't just about compensation. It's about preventing the same thing happening to other people.

Coyoacan · 23/06/2022 23:30

I'm shocked at the lack of sympathy or understanding for this young man. Five years ago people were losing their jobs and friends for saying publicly that you can change sex. Therapists who didn't provide affirmative therapy were getting named, shamed, boycotted and worse.

Any reference to unsuccessful surgery was thought to be transphobic.

So here was a mentally ill young man being told by everyone - TRAs, society in general, doctors and therapists - that his mental problems would be solved by taking this surgery that would convert him into a woman.

Doyoumind · 23/06/2022 23:26

It's not easy to get a true picture of the outcomes for anyone considering surgery because the trans community only wants to paint a positive picture.

I have absolutely no time for the 'you made your bed...' comments. They are heartless and not the words of people who have any interest in working to help other people falling into the same trap.

I find this incredibly heartless. He obviously had mental health problems, and surgery is presented as a cure all in some quarters.

You don’t have to insist on surgery when you are diagnosed when gender dysphoria, it’s presented as the next stage (well, for the young anyway).

LemonSwan · 23/06/2022 23:26

Oh no. I just found and read his tweets through the other thread.

It’s been 4 years. So not surgery shock.

It’s beyond tragic. I have no words

I have compassion for these young people, they may not have had the support they needed making such big decisions

It’d be interesting to understand the conversations that happened at the time.

In the UK, and on the NHS, I suspect that he himself had to argue forcefully and coherently about why the surgery was right for him, and that alternatives were offered which he rejected.

Has anyone asked him what he would have done if the doctors has refused the surgery? Sued at that point too?

CallOnMe · 23/06/2022 23:22

I'm sorry but this was major surgery that he didn't have to have, did he not research it? I do feel sorry for him but I completely disagree with him suing the NHS for this.

I completely agree.

He was a grown adult and made a choice.

This wouldn’t have been a spur of the moment choice like getting a tattoo when you’re drunk - he would have had to go through quite a few consultations etc and have it booked, you don’t just go to the gp and get your penis h chopped off on the same day.

Lots of people get cosmetic surgery when they don’t need it/makes them look awful. But as an adult you need to take some responsibility for yourself.

Instead of blaming the NHS for this - he needs to put effort into helping other people who are also considering transitioning and what impact it may have on them.

BootsAndRoots · 23/06/2022 23:20

@FemmeNatal But with the recent talk about "conversion therapy" anything other than affirmation would be considered "conversion therapy". Discussing other options is hugely discouraged.

With this individual it was clear that medical professionals should've looked at his mental health and other conditions, but they didn't and they focused on the gender dysmorphia.

The investigations into Tavistock have shown that puberty blockers are a one-way street to full blown surgery. I've heard about both male and female patients not being told the full extent of what will happen, what the surgery entails etc.

His surgery definitely sounds botched, whilst I don't doubt the regret, perhaps if the surgery wasn't as bad the story may be different.

maeveiscurious · 23/06/2022 23:20

ChagSameachDoreen · 23/06/2022 22:53

I'm sorry, but I don't have all that much sympathy. What the hell did he expect?

I'm sick and tired of fighting this. Just let people be led by their convictions and pay the price when it goes to shit.

I have compassion for these young people, they may not have had the support they needed making such big decisions

Great post and very true.

maeveiscurious · 23/06/2022 23:19

I don't think the men realise that surgery is like eugenics, they are sterile eunuchs with no way back and God know what the drugs are doing to them. I imagine we are going to see an unexpected rise in illnesses for these young men and women.

It's really sad

MrsOvertonsWindow · 23/06/2022 23:17

I feel nothing but sympathy for him - and there's a massive queue of young women and men behind him.
It is unthinkable what we're allowing to happen in medicine. I now view the NHS in a very different way than I used to, seeing how they've bought into this harmful ideology that is wreaking such havoc on children and young people's lives.

catfunk · 23/06/2022 23:17

I'd be interested to know how long he was having treatment before. Knowing the state of the NHS I very much doubt they just randomly quickly offered him surgery and he panicked and said yes as he's portraying.

Eelicks · 23/06/2022 23:16

For the lawyers to take it on no win no fee they must think it has some merit. Lawyers are all about the $

Whatwouldscullydo · 23/06/2022 23:16

FemmeNatal · 23/06/2022 23:10

But he asked for this exact surgery to be done. He is literally complaining that the surgery to remove his cock and balls removed his cock and balls.

The public can be idiots. Clueless amd Impatient etc. That's why it's usually down to medical professionals to know better. They shouldn't be influenced by ideologies, lobby groups etc amd live in fear of being deemed transphobic eveb when those doing the accusing are not the ones changing his nappies and cleaning weeping wounds when he gets home. The nhs should not he aligned with any of thee groups. Patient welfare trumps approval from.lobby groups

YetAnotherNameChange111 · 23/06/2022 23:16

Grown man starts transitioning at 25 and has voluntary op on the NHS years later (so probably when he was about 30).

Is now 35 and lo and behold regrets not researching it and apparently "wasn't told of any risks" 🤔. Yeah right - cos you cant look them up yourself you eejit.

Now wants a huge payment for being knobless, despite not paying out for it in the first place....

Yeah, not a lot of sympathy

FemaleAndLearning · 23/06/2022 23:16

Once again shows that this surgery should be after the age of 25. Would it have made any difference for this man, we don't know. Lack of explorative therapy with a neutral therapist sounds like it would have been a better choice and money better spent. Does it also highlight that once you are on the trans train you can't easily get off. Children and adults need an exit plan. We need to make it okay to change your mind. I realise that is hard when these people get indoctrinated. Very sad.

NotBadConsidering · 23/06/2022 23:16

He is fully aware of his role in his decision, he’s not stupid. There is already a thread on this.

goldengirlsoncraic · 23/06/2022 23:15

As much as i feel sorry for him he was 25 when he went for surgery.
Not exactly young.
Its nobody elses responsibility to do research. Thats down to you.

When are people going to realise the buck stops with you.Not everything is someone elses fault.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 23/06/2022 23:15

people feel sorry for female detransitioners but they don't for male detransitioners and they experience hatred.

I don't see hatred on display: I have read some framings that feel callous.

It will be interesting to see the way in which the legal advisors pursue this case and whom they include.

Ironically, I should think that a number of judges would be relatively dismissive of the extent of female detransitioners' surgery and regret. I suspect, in a law court, there would be substantial cultural understanding of what it means to have had a penis removed because it's so strongly associated with a man's sexual instinct and life as well as reproduction.

I wonder if the issue of freezing sperm as 'insurance' was introduced during informed consent or would it have been considered something that would aggravate dysphoria.

The issues may well be even more complex than I expect.
