Mmm.. im broadly a trans ally... but..

I've long had concerns because the NHS has proved itself unable, over and over and over again, to provide useful, accessible, competent, mental health services.

Gender Reassignment decisions and surgery require the mental health side works with the surgical side, and frankly. It doesn't.

It isn't just this, the after care for life altering surgery.. isn't there.

Bariatric surgery - year 1, year 2, year 3 when you're a great statistic, lost dramatic amounts of weight, look great... they're there.

Year 5, 6 and on, when you're suffering the longer term effects of malnutrition, a fucked up gut, absorption problems and deficiencies and despite the known (if not fully understood) link between gut health and mental health... you're on your own. There's nothing.

I'll bet this guy fought tooth and nail, swore whatever was necessary to get this surgery. And then relied on a failing mental health system as a safety net.

It isn't good enough. But he does need to own at least some of the culpability himself - no one MADE him cut his cock and balls off. How far do we legislate for peoples own stupidity?

If he'd been denied surgery, would we be seeing him sue the NHS for that - I suspect we probably would.

I have to say I did snort at the 'i have a stump, it twitches'.. WELCOME TO THE CLITORIS MY FRIEND...

I'm appalled at the lack of sympathy, I truly am.

So am I.

OneEyedPenguin · 24/06/2022 01:51

Are you saying thatl trans people who want to change their bodies are not in their right mind?

It depends what you think trans is. Is it a medical condition, a psychological condition, a miss placed soul or a reaction to regressive gender norms and/ or homophobia?

EggRollsForever · 24/06/2022 01:42

OneEyedPenguin · 24/06/2022 00:50

Someone that wants their healthy gentials removed is not a person that is in their right mind. I honestly don't know how such a person can be seen to have given informed consent.

I feel sorry for him. The NHS should not be butchering healthy bodies. We need to fund much better mental health treatments.

The NHS can't win though can it? If it refuses to do gender affirmation surgery it'll be sued by all the people claiming mental anguish. One case of suicide linked to such a decision and the tables would be turned again.

Where I live (Victoria) it's actually illegal to provide any counselling or therapy that questions a person's gender identity.

I was recently chatting with a young trans woman who earnestly told me how once she'd had her 'bottom' surgery even doctors wouldn't be able to tell... that's the utter shite they're being fed online.

oakleaffy · 24/06/2022 01:23

Doyoumind · 24/06/2022 00:43

That's appalling.
These surgeries need banning, not pushing for by those Pro~trans groups.
The risk of a change of mind is just too great by the sound of it.

Of course surgically messing around with genitalia carries a huge risk.

Some of the most convincing trans women {Blair White} have a penis and testicles. BW is also pretty sensible.

Trans umbrella now with added "eunuch" identity.

It is monstrous.
This young man is one of the fall guys.
The NHS should not be mutilating and castrating healthy bodies.
Mental illness needs to be treated as such.
This is all sunlight and these people who have been through transition are our best spokespersons.

I hope he finds some peace.

I am also sad to see this publication seems to be ok/legitimised when it suits various motives. A subject such as this requires more authentic reportage, surely? Why are we to take a sexist rag such as this seriously just because it pretends to pander to our issues?

I agree with you regarding that racist and misogynistic publication and did not click on the link for that reason (thankfully I already recognised whom the thread was about). I will say that at least it was obvious that it was a DM link this time as links for DM and The Sun are often disguised as "Here is the article" or similar.

Here's the original twitter thread. It's an archive link as TRAs reported it and parts were deleted by twitter.

Goodness, some of the replies on this thread are absolutely astonishing in their callousness and, quite frankly, ignorance.

Certain posters are pointing to the fact that this man was already an adult rather than a child at the time of treatment, as though that proves he is entirely to blame for what happened. This point of view fails to recognise one of the major reasons as to why a child receiving this treatment would be/should be so outrageous - because children are categorised as 'vulnerable'.

Children are not the only section of society that are 'vulnerable', many adults can also be classed as 'vulnerable' whether due to physical, emotional and/or mental conditions.

This is why the phrase "of sound mind" is associated with will writing, to ensure that the adult bequeathing their estate is not being forced or coerced into writing something they either don't mean or don't understand. This is also why decent plastic surgeons are expected to require a psychological assessment of their potential patients prior to aesthetic procedures, e.g. rhinoplasty or breast augmentation.

Medical professionals have a duty of care to their patients that includes not performing unnecessary procedures on vulnerable individuals that may not be in a fit state to make an informed decision.

As to the comments about why the man is suing for money rather than a promise to not perform the same treatment on others - the latter suggestion is frankly nonsense and would never be upheld. We live in a capitalist society, money talks (in fact that is why the lobbying by the likes of Stonewall has been so insidiously effective), so suing for money is (obviously) an attempt to create a disincentive for future treatment of the same type as it establishes the threat of more money having to be paid out in the future.

oakleaffy · 24/06/2022 00:37

Surely he had enough brain cells to realise that amputation of penis and testicles {Or whatever is done} is going to render him literally a ''Eunuch'' as he states?
It's basic common sense, surely.

He must have requested the surgery, they don't give it out willy nilly, surely?

Goldshelfie · 24/06/2022 00:35

Surely doctors can’t just butcher people even if they ask them to? This surgery has such terrible complications that I believe it is unethical for any doctor to do it to anyone, no matter how much they may want it.

I am disappointed by so many people saying he must take responsibility, he is not a doctor! He wouldn’t have known how bad the results would be. He needed care and instead was carved up by monstrous surgeons with a god complex.

I wish him well and hope that this is the beginning of the end of this cavalier attitude to having irreversible surgery. People with the desire to cut their genitals off obviously need psychological help, not doctors colluding with their misguided notions.

EL8888 · 24/06/2022 00:34

@Zipupyourmickey yep. It’s like me asking my decorator to paint my lounge purple, they then paint it purple. I then said l didn’t want it done. Decorator rightly would say why pick the colour, get a quote, ask me to do it and then pay me?! To then say you are fine sticking with magnolia after all

Doyoumind · 24/06/2022 00:33

EL8888 · 24/06/2022 00:31

@Doyoumind yep l read the whole article. Still no sympathy. He’s acting like he rocked up on Monday and they did it on Tuesday. It doesn’t work like that! He choose to do it. It’s buyers remorse but on a grand scale basically

I didn't say to read the article. I said to find out more about him. The DM just lifted (part of) the story from his Twitter.

Zipupyourmickey · 24/06/2022 00:31

I feel sympathy for him and I think it's a complex issue but I think suing the NHS is a bit ridiculous. They did what he asked them to do. It's a tragic mistake but I don't think it's their fault. He has to take responsibility for his own decision.

What did he think was going to happen?! I’m genuinely blown away by the stupidly and him declining to take responsibility. It wasn’t done to him, he asked for it?!

Harsh but fair about the genes. He’s not the sharpest tool in the box 🤷‍♀️

"He’s not the sharpest tool in the box"

Which in my book would make him vulnerable and therefore his medical advisors should have realized that he was not in the right frame of mind to be receiving this kind of irreversible surgery.

BloomsburyNook · 24/06/2022 00:27

however, fuck the DM. Im sorry but while i am interested in this topic i cant take anything this misogynist shit rag says seriously, c'mon ladies.

"shows off her figure in racy bikini"
enough said.

Easilystartled · 24/06/2022 00:26

I feel very sorry for him. He made a life changing decision that he then came to regret. But it was his decision. As a pp said, people do have to take responsibility for themselves and I think it’s unreasonable in his case to blame/sue the nhs.
Children, however, is another matter……

It was always going to get to this point.

Life altering elective surgery performed on people who were too mentally ill to consent. Of course the doctors need to be held to account.

I have no truck with the "what did he expect" posters. When someone has a mental health problem it is exceptionally poor care to chop off their healthy body parts. And the doctors who do that are culpable.

Kiera Bell tried the judicial review route and was knocked back. Suing is the only thing which will stop this happening over and over again.
