Drag Queen Story Time

First time posting here, so not sure of the etiquette. My apologies if this is the wrong place to raise these concerns.

Reading Borough Council is planning to hold Drag Queen Story Hour events in our libraries during the summer holidays. I’ve written to my MP, my councillors, and the Head of the Library Service to raise concerns. I think drag is entirely inappropriate for children, as it is a form of adult entertainment, highly sexualised and misogynistic, that blurs boundaries and undermines safeguarding.

The response Ive had is simply that they have received very few complaints so no reason to cancel.

Has anyone had any experience of tackling their local library over this issue? Grateful for any tips.

Also, if you live in Berkshire ,would you be willing to write and share your concerns?

thanks!

The tone is quite disingenuous, isn't it?.

I think I’d have found that article moderately convincing if all the stuff Samuels said about himself wasn’t belied by the pictures of his moose knuckle in his DQST costume.

Mentioning TW in sports was a bit of a slip up. When you start positioning obvious common sense as violent bigotry it makes the narrative fall apart. But otherwise the article was pretty well executed. Pushes hard on the “well what’s the harm?” “live and let live” buttons that most of us have.

It’s alarmingly easy to caricature opposition to DQST as hostility to gay men. Not sure what to be done about this, especially as some of those opposing it actually are hostile to gay men. If the drag queens would just tuck their dick away in front of the kids it would help a lot, but that’s clearly not going to happen. Or if more gay men would speak up against it, it might avert some potential nastiness. I have a bad feeling there’s a homophobic backlash on the horizon, especially if the monkeypox time bomb goes off.

While I don't doubt that some, maybe many, of the performers who do or would like to do DQST, I think this article is very one-sided. They carefully do not mention some of the instances I've read about on here where drag queens come dressed very sexually suggestively or display sexualised slogans etc.

The section about drag and blackface has got me thinking. I don't disagree with the academic who says 'Drag is an exploration of gender', but I'm not sure that's ALL it is. They say blackface was used to 'stereotype, ridicule and ostracise black communities'; can we not say similar things about drag and women? I'm not directly comparing power over enslaved Black people to power over women, but I don't think they can be completely unrelated.

Does anyone know if there's any academic writing on drag from the POV of it being comparable to blackface?

Another man calling women protesting this nonsense 'far right'

It's has no meaning anymore and is like water off a duck's back

Gosh, the petulant bullying in that DQST statement. It is like they have no professional skills at all and don't mind showing it to the world.

Can't use apostrophes, either!

Rochdale Borough Council have let down every counter-protester and supporter who have attended all other libraries with thus decision. I am disappointed in them. Please email

Good, thank god someone was listening to women and ignoring the TRAs.

KittenKong · 10/08/2022 17:41

They really want to go there with ‘breach of contract’?

If the council has any sense their contract - with regards to those in contact with children - will be tighter than a fishes a*se when it comes to reputation and social media activity.

Rochdale council have postponed (no future date booked) their story hour over fear of protests.

Alexaplaykatebush · 09/08/2022 23:24

I work in a library, we do have security but it's one man who mostly just sits there and does a walk around once an hour.
We hosted a show a few weeks ago, security was still the one guy and no bag checking was involved. Why would it be?
Thank god I really can't see this nonsense ever arriving at my library, especially during the summer reading challenge when we have got so many other ways of drawing kids in and including everyone with a brilliant theme.

Maybe also search for 'love has no age', he regularly seems to post about 'terfs', and Andy Ngo tweeted screen shots of this person's threat to dox a woman too.

KittenKong · 08/08/2022 15:43

If someone’s mum wanted to read to the kiddies and was posting stuff like that, there’s no way they’d be allowed, no matter how hard the cried and stamped their feet. Why do we infantilise these grown men and let them have their way?

Helleofabore · 08/08/2022 15:36

Maybe this will help:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11085685/Why-councils-spending-taxpayers-cash-drag-queens-read-children-Asks-KATHRYN-KNIGHT.html

If you do a search using specific terms like their drag name and terms like 'orgy' and others that relate to tweets, and choose images... you should get some images to attach to your email.

For instance, there is one of Arthur's sister Dora, from the show 'Arthur' that this person posted in relation to orgies. The images are out there. This person deleted them in an attempt to 'clean up' their tweets. But they were known enough that 'receipts' are easy to find.

Boadicea2 · 08/08/2022 15:31

It's Aida H Dee - I think that's Samuels?
What are the tweets? I can't see anything inappropriate on their account although it is nauseatingly self-congratulatory.
@VenetiaHallMasham I see you've complained to Wokingham too - any joy?

Well, I've heard back. Apparently this performer has been well received at other libraries in the county - I wonder if that includes the protest at Reading.
Also the performer has dbs check, staff are hot on safeguarding etc etc.
Didn't really address my points about being a sexualized parody of women.
Trying to decide if I can face emailing again.

Is it Samuels? If so, perhaps you could ask if safeguarding checks picked up this performers tweets and whether they dismissed those tweets, and why?

I am really very curious to know if social media checks are being done or not. And if so, what behaviour is considered suitable for children's entertainers.

Boadicea2 · 07/08/2022 16:52

Just emailed Wokingham Libraries and my local councillors. I pointed out the possibility of protest with risks to customers as well as the feminist criticisms of DQSH.
See if I get any responses.

For goodness sake, Saulgravy. When you make accusations like that without any evidence at all, this is what we call 'defamation'. Any lawyer would be happy to explain this to you.

An eyewitness account of the Leeds one yesterday, from @baddaytoquitsmoking who posted below.

grahamlinehan.substack.com/p/wont-somebody-actually-think-of-the

Holy shit!

He had left and was aghast that the decision had been taken to keep a large group of children on the top floor of a building while a fire alarm was going off, while an entire floor was evacuated and while staff and security “checked to see if it was a false alarm”.

The implications of this are staggering. Leeds City Council deliberately made the call to ignore fire safety protocol and evacuate one part of a building and not another, one containing babies and very small children. Whether a protestor had or hadn’t tripped it, surely safety should come first and foremost?

FFS!
