Drag Queen Story Time

First time posting here, so not sure of the etiquette. My apologies if this is the wrong place to raise these concerns.

Reading Borough Council is planning to hold Drag Queen Story Hour events in our libraries during the summer holidays. I’ve written to my MP, my councillors, and the Head of the Library Service to raise concerns. I think drag is entirely inappropriate for children, as it is a form of adult entertainment, highly sexualised and misogynistic, that blurs boundaries and undermines safeguarding.

The response Ive had is simply that they have received very few complaints so no reason to cancel.

Has anyone had any experience of tackling their local library over this issue? Grateful for any tips.

Also, if you live in Berkshire ,would you be willing to write and share your concerns?

thanks!

This was obviously written by non-parents - folx who have never actually interacted with a two year old. Who should they be let within a million miles of one.

Sadly there will be some very boring and average parental units who will lap this claptrap up.

ScrollingLeaves · 23/07/2022 22:43

Stonewall’s latest targets for indoctrination are two year olds.

^Research suggests that children as
young as 2 recognise their trans
identity. Yet, many nurseries and
schools teach a binary
understanding of pre-assigned
gender.
LGBTO-inclusive and affirming
education is crucial for the
wellbeing of all young people!^

Just wanted to say if you haven't complained yet please do - I know at least one library group is now very aware that some people aren't happy due to Twitter.

The people organising this are trying to convince themselves/ everyone else that it's just far right nutters from America complaining, so if you are local to a library and/ or a parent and can use your real name it makes a huge difference. Email is better than phoning as it leaves a trail, and obviously be polite so they can't write anything off as abuse. You will probably get a generic "Diversity blah blah" response so maybe reply to that as well.

Also Freedom of Information Requests are good as they have to be responded to within a timescale - goes into a different box! Maybe someone smarter than me can suggest some wording - not sure what would be most useful.

As OP (? or other PP) said it's a numbers game so if as many people as possible can contact their council/ library they will at least know this is an issue which can't be ignored. Thank you Mumsnet FWR you are amazing. 😍

Children find bogeys, willies and poo jokes amusing. Not very educations either.

I downloaded their policy & it seems to me there are quite a few holes in it. Emailed my ward councillor about this but her reply was simply that they hadn’t had many complaints & that children find twerking amusing! 🤬

That would be a nice quote for the local news.

I shall be contacting the libraries in Sutton Borough also, besides writing to the schools in this Borough as hasn't it been known to take place in schools?

LizzyStrata · 22/07/2022 07:48

So sorry for such a late response. I’m an infrequent user & hadn’t checked the messages for ages. 100% ok with you using the words I wrote, adapted in a way that works for you i

Drag Queen Story Grooming in Plain Sight

MrsJamin · 21/07/2022 20:30

I think these are still going ahead 😔
I can't imagine the down to earth people of Southcote or Whitley are going to stand for this 😬🙄

LizzyStrata · 22/06/2022 09:37

Correct!

I wonder whether from the kid's point of view, this will all go over their heads. It seems that most young children think these drag queen's are actually women (step in the misguided trendy parent...'aah, they are not a woman, think on that...').

Still, I don't know why adults have to serve this up on a plate to children. Adult entertainment is...adult entertainment however you frame it and kid's aren't mini adults. There's already a ton of age appropriate children's entertainment that fulfills all the briefs of DQST, minus the overtones of gender identity and kink which are innate to drag.

MagpiePi · 22/06/2022 08:21

VestofAbsurdity · 13/06/2022 15:03

Perhaps you could also ask them if they have ever hosted a story time where a disabled or BAME person read the stories? Why the fuck do councils think DQSH is acceptable? What diversity/protected characteristic is this highlighting? It's just men misogynistically and offensively parodying women.

Because Inclusivity is now almost entirely about T+ seeing as they are the most marginalised, downtrodden, discriminated against, excluded, abused group ever. 🙄

Wonnle · 22/06/2022 08:16

Why are they trying to normalise this modern freak show ?

Thought those went out with the Victorian era

Sorry I don't see the problem, presumably you all take your kids to panto where shock horror men are dressed as women. We've had the drag queen story time at our local kids club and was very well received.

Have you read the thread? Do you understand the concerns of many posters here? Do you get it?

God that that old chestnut. So widow granny is the same things as Anna Bortion then?

Anna Bortion? Jesus wept.

LizzyStrata · 22/06/2022 07:54

That’s absolutely fine. Good luck!

Fgs, panto isn't compulsory. No I don't take my children to panto. Regardless, drag is not the same as panto. Drag is adult sexualised entertainment. Drag performers are not necessarily gay, I have no idea why they have recently become the apparently ideal example of LGBTQ+ representation for children.

I'm assuming you don't all take your kids to panto then ??

FrancescaContini · 22/06/2022 06:54

And I agree with a PP that a whole generation of parents is being groomed.

FrancescaContini · 22/06/2022 06:52

There’s lots of really useful information here, OP. Very well done for challenging this event.

When shops/restaurants etc say something along the lines of, “Well, nobody else has raised a concern or complaint about this”, it’s a cue to reply that that’s irrelevant, that YOU are complaining, and that you’d like them to listen to you.

845672AKD · 22/06/2022 06:40

Message to LizzyStrata: I'd like to use your message of 130622 in an edited version, namely that which includes 'a man approaches his local library and asks to be allowed to read to children who don’t know him, allows them to sit on his knee, blows kisses at them, jokes, hands out treats'

  • while respecting your anonymity. When writing to schools in my area or to my local council, should it take place in a library around here. Trust that's OK.
LizzyStrata · 16/06/2022 20:22

Thanks! Very useful reading

I honestly think this is just an easy gig for some performers. It's another performance avenue to pursue, it's in the afternoon, the audience is extremely non threatening and there's a decent wedge of cash for this whilst being able to perform in the evening.

Then there's all kinds of justification attached to make it 'crucial' which serves to validate and justify the performer.

Children's entertainment has always included play, dress up and fantasy, plenty of age appropriate ways to delight kids.

I've also seen kids loving library story hour just by one of the library assistants being so much fun. You don't need drag.
