Drag Queen Story Time

First time posting here, so not sure of the etiquette. My apologies if this is the wrong place to raise these concerns.

Reading Borough Council is planning to hold Drag Queen Story Hour events in our libraries during the summer holidays. I’ve written to my MP, my councillors, and the Head of the Library Service to raise concerns. I think drag is entirely inappropriate for children, as it is a form of adult entertainment, highly sexualised and misogynistic, that blurs boundaries and undermines safeguarding.

The response Ive had is simply that they have received very few complaints so no reason to cancel.

Has anyone had any experience of tackling their local library over this issue? Grateful for any tips.

Also, if you live in Berkshire ,would you be willing to write and share your concerns?

thanks!

I believe that change in societal attitudes to what is suitable for children cannot be imposed by fear and name-calling.

When that is attempted, eventually there is a societal backlash, that undoubtedly attracts some questionable people to the issue.

Feminists on this board have been waring people about the impacts of this potential backlash on minorities, in particular on gay, lesbian and bisexual people.

The 'be kind' crowd called us far-right bigots for years now, well before Proud Boys got involved, maybe it's worth addressing actual arguments on this thread rather than worry about far-right's opinion?

Or do you form your opinions on the opposites, so if 'bad' people have an opinion you always feel that you need to take the opposite one?

Do you spend a lot of time checking these people's opinions, just to make sure you don't accidentally agree on the same thing, genuinely interested!

I have never had any common ground with neo Nazis or trump..I will report back if that ever happens! Re trans issues- it is relatively new for me; and I don't have a fully formulated opinion. I have met trans people at my synagogue (somehow they choose to transition into a new religion at the same time!); Tbh they just seemed like very unhappy people but that is not unusual in a religious setting; after all, religion is often a refuge for the lonely!
I have a SIL who has now declared herself a member of the trans community (same issues with mental health; zero history of gender dysphoria). That's why I am looking into it seriously now.

I was actually quite uncertain about the whole trans issue but was more inclined towards the GC perspective as I value female only toilets and am quite uncomfortable with the idea of children/young people being allowed to pursue such drastic medical interventions. This video is shocking- the woman appeared quite unhinged screaming about paedophilia and 'woke-ism'. There are similar protests about drag story hour in the USA and some of the protestors are neo Nazis. As a Jewish person, I do not want to share any kind of platform with any neo Nazis on any issue! So this whole thread has made me re-evaluate. I am not sure I agree with drag story hour but the entertainer was hired to do a job by the council and deserves to not be harassed when doing a job.

It can't be a good look for the movement if across the Atlantic, the people championing the cause are neo Nazis....

Well we have tried to call attention to the problem in various ways, complaints to the LA, letters to the libraries, visits to MPs and so one. But sometimes we have to be heard in other ways..

IcakethereforeIam · 27/07/2022 01:01

I wondered that, then I fell down a rabbit hole wondering if 'transparent' would make a good joke...

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 27/07/2022 00:49

(who gained access by posing as parents with a baby in a pram)

Grr. The only time this person has ever said something interesting on here and of course they fumble the story.

Was it a fake baby? Or had they kidnapped it or something?

IcakethereforeIam · 27/07/2022 00:36

On the face of what you describe I'd have to agree, I could indulge in some whataboutery....but I won't.

MargaritaPie · 27/07/2022 00:29

Complaining is one thing but I saw a video on Twitter today where a few protestors (who gained access by posing as parents with a baby in a pram) were accusing the drag queens of horrible things in front of the children. I think that's uncalled for and not the way to protest.

Stella Creasy took her wriggly baby to one:

"What a lovely afternoon with Drag Story Hour UK today with the wonderful Greta who put so much energy into story telling and entertaining local children - Proud too that Walthamstow a community that welcomes and celebrates pride with the @morrisgallery in this lovely way!" 🌈🌈

That first picture...what's the film where two people are talking at a kitchen table and suddenly there's a red faced demon behind one of them?

Mollyollydolly · 27/07/2022 00:09

Stella's got a baby? She kept that quiet. Makes a change from dragging it round the House of Commons I suppose.

Googled the drag queen in question and this is one of the first images that came up. This can't be what I think it is can it??

It's an unfortunately tight outfit for a lady in question. Perhaps something more flowing next time, Style and Beauty section has some great outfits Smile

"inappropriate garb"

And here was I thinking that all GCs subscribed to the JK Rowling mantra of "dress however you please". Clearly it only applies if you conform to gender norms.

We're talking about children. To someone with no interest in children's wellbeing / safety I suppose it's a bit of a shock to realise that adults are meant to adapt their language, behaviour and on occasions (mainly for the extremist kink / porn addicts) even their dress when being introduced to children (maybe google age appropriate for a bit of help).

But Mumsnet's a useful place to learn this stuff as the vast majority of posters are women with a good appreciation of the needs of children

TullyApplebottom · 26/07/2022 23:14

That would hardly be less dignified than her current carry on

TullyApplebottom · 26/07/2022 23:14

I do think we should all just withdraw attention from creasy until she’s forced to paint her arse blue and stick it in Lewis’s window to get us to look at her.

Local residents where these are held need to ask their Councils/Councillors how much money is spent on this and where the money comes from. Taxpayers have every right to question what their taxes are being used for and to hear the justification for it.

This. Also ask the libraries with a Freedom of Information Request

Stella Creasy tries so, so hard. Very 'how do you do, fellow kids'.

I have no wish for my kids to be read to by what is essentially Bernard Manning after a crash course in Gender Trouble.

KittenKong · 26/07/2022 22:30

So she does have a clue about safeguarding them (assuming there was more than one kid there).

ValancyRedfern · 26/07/2022 22:18

What I like about Stella Creasy's pictures is that her baby appears to be the only one there.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 26/07/2022 21:55

Stella really is a deeply tedious handmaiden 🙄

At the end of the day a man in drag is simply someone in a dress, wig and makeup.

You wouldn't have an issue with an individual doing this if they were a woman and that's why I find this debate so bizarre. People really need to leave the mindset of 1950s behind.

Sometimes the fake boobs, too.

Do you think the black and white minstrels should be accepted back then? Just a wig and make up in your eyes. I'm surprised you don't see ridicule. Do you think it is all just harmless fun to perform this in front of children?

I don't think either are meant to be flattering to the 'others' they are dressing up as. Quite the opposite.

KittenKong · 26/07/2022 21:20

When I was little I still remember people reading to us - an old soldier from WW2, an elderly lady who was a Burn fanatic and recited poems, an lady from Nigeria who told us traditional stories, and a policeman who yelled at us (I know which of you pressed the crossing button without crossing the road! I have seen you! If I see you again you will be in big trouble!).

These were when I was primary 2 (about 4). Amazing - apart from PC Grumpy Pants (as we named him).

All that libraries should be doing at the moment is promoting the summer reading scheme and offering events related to the theme for that.
My local library is offering lots of different activities over the summer, surely the whole point of a library is to get people to read books, keep people returning to the service and improve literacy within the community.
If this puts even one person off from using the public library which it obviously is doing, it is not inclusive.

Exactly, the reading schemes always have diverse characters from different ethnic groups and disabilities to reflect different children. I would prefer to see adults representing the diverse ethic communities in Reading and may be representative from the Autistic Pride group who run a festival locally for example. This would be a better use of limited funds.

I admire the woman’s strength to get out and voice her objections. Would I have used the same language? No. But I object as I would prefer inclusivity to actually include people who parents/carers can see representing their child as an adult. Sure, they might grow up and do drag but I would argue that seeing an adult in a wheelchair or an adult who is autistic would do more. Drag to me, is in same league as burlesque, entertainment for adults. An art form for some but it isn’t aimed at children and will confuse many.
