They say on their website they are for women only, but does anyone know if the WI allow male bodied people who “identify as women” to join? I’d like to join our local one but this would be an issue for me. Thanks in advance.

Oh for God sake, join the bloody thing if you feel the need. The chances are that everywhere there was born female, if not you might meet some people that cut through some of your prejudices and ultimately come out a nicer person.

Why do we insist on painting all women as victims? If you really can’t be with men at all then you need help, but most women can cope with a few men and even transwomen. Sometime these are exactly the kind of people that need companionship and a little extra kindness.

So the women who can not be in close contact with males (Muslim/orthodox Jewish women for example) need help but the males who insist on eradicating female single sex boundaries need extra kindness?

SarahShorty · 13/06/2022 11:29

My MIL used to be a member of the WI. Key phrase there being 'used to be'. She's a woman, although there were far too many disagreements and stupid cat fights, so she stuck two fingers up and left.

They are inclusive of all women though whether you like it or not
If you don't want to go because of that, then that's up to you of course.

What a nonsense statement. They are inclusive of all women including males but not the women who will be excluded because, for various reasons, they can not be in the close company of males.

motogirl · 13/06/2022 11:13

The wi and the mothers Union allow male members, being interested in them isn't exclusively for women after all men bake cakes too. We have 2 male members of the mothers union and one is raising his daughters following the death of their mother, he appreciates the support from others and seems to like the talks too

CrossStichQueen · 13/06/2022 10:59

GoodJanet

Males are not women.

This post contains at least 3 times the RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance) for irony.Does anyone know what the upper safe level on irony is, where over-consumption moves from of no further nutritional benefit to toxic?

Actually, studies show that up to 20% of MNers are irony deficient as they are lack the gene for digesting irony - it just passes straight through, they can't absorb it at all.

From the symptoms, I think that's highly like to be the case for PP.

I've just joined Women's Rights Network so thanks for the info

lapasion · 13/06/2022 08:06

Our local one does and is very vocal about it. They even had a very patronisingly titled event called ‘Have you ever met a trans woman?’ Boring.

Giggorata · 13/06/2022 04:41

Odd that this thread has come up now, as I was at an event yesterday where I was taken aback to see the WI stall, staffed by members which included an obviously biological man.
Women can't have anything for themselves any more. 😡

OMG Janet, you can't say that something's "inclusive" when in fact it's horribly exclusive! Why do you think poor Peter Keigan had to start the Men's Institute?

The Women's Rights Network is women only, you could join us 😀

Toohottt · 13/06/2022 04:25

Nowhere is women only now, so sad. 😥

donquixotedelamancha · 12/06/2022 23:28

The Men's pool at Hamstead Heath is single sex? What about the Women's pool at Hamstead Heath?

They are both mixed sex now. Thing is, how many women will actually use the men's pool?

Cailleach1 · 12/06/2022 23:22

Motorina · 12/06/2022 21:31

The masons.

The men’s pool at Hampstead Heath.
The Garrick Club
The East India Club

Ohhh. You mean single sec spaces for women?

Don’t be silly.

The Men's pool at Hamstead Heath is single sex? What about the Women's pool at Hamstead Heath?

Does that mean it is only men (who say they are women) who get carte blanche to get undressed in front of women and view women getting changed?

Feelingoktoday · 12/06/2022 23:17

Where I live there is a WI which doesn’t know what a woman is. There is also a private members club. Think, village hall style, cheap beer etc. This club clearly states on its website that is for men only. See men don’t have a problem with their private members clubs. Yet us women bend over backwards to be fully inclusive.

janesmithsdog · 12/06/2022 22:58

Ha, I knew what you meant.

I just feel so sad that even an organisation with women in it’s TITLE is so quick to give up on the word having any meaning.

God I hope this tide turns soon.

Motorina · 12/06/2022 21:33

Three times I changed sec to sex. Every time my bloody phone changed it back. There’s probably a metaphor in that.

Motorina · 12/06/2022 21:31

janesmithsdog · 12/06/2022 20:45

Oh, I’m a bit gutted by that.
Is anywhere still single sex these days ffs??

WI stopped being for women a long time ago. Kathleen Stock wrote about them, amongst others. (Twitter thread no longer exists but some quotations here.)

in the upside down “inclusive” means including men in womens organisations, sport & prisons

somehow though we don’t allow ppl to self identify into other protected characteristics though. Odd that it’s only women who have to give way

picklemewalnuts · 12/06/2022 20:36

They totally are. I won't be joining on principle. If a women's organisation doesn't know what a woman is, I've no time for it.
