It is not an STI- it is not exclusively spread by sexual contact, and it is not more likely to be spread by male same-sex sexual contact. So it is not a 'gay disease'.

It is a virus that has only had a few outbreaks, which have so far been linked to gay bars, according to the daily mail.

There is no biological reason why it should stay confined to those spots. If an infected person has close physical contact with people in other locations (e.g. heterosexual swingers' parties), it'll spread there too.

This is not a time for lulling ourselves into a sense of false security.

The Daily Mail seem pretty adamant on pushing it as gay male related, maybe because of the LGB Alliance tweets which they quoted.

Britain's monkeypox cases are linked to gay bars, saunas and dating apps, health chiefs revealed as the cumulative number of cases in the UK nears 200.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said more than 60 per cent of domestic infections have been among gay and bisexual men, with more than 86 per cent based in the epicentre London. Only two cases have been women.
Most of the country's infections — 87 per cent — were among people aged 20 to 49. And 111 cases are known to be men who have sex with men.
Most of the UK patients caught the virus in the UK rather than abroad, which is significant because previously the tropical disease was confined to a small number of people with travel links to Africa.
Officials said that contact tracing teams had linked the outbreak back to 'gay bars, saunas and the use of dating apps in the UK and abroad'. MailOnline revealed last week the world's biggest gay dating app Grindr had alerted to users of monkeypox symptoms.

If you think about it, there are lots of non-sexual close-contact hobbies that are starting up again. They have been closed because of covid and they are all possible avenues for transmission of monkeypox. Until recently, very few events that required touch were being held. That's why it's been predominantly found in connection with "gay bars and saunas" . Only place left open. Due to Covid, we have been given a chance to easily contain this virus. Let's not waste it.

It will spread just as easily amongst toddlers at nursery as it does at any sauna.

@LangClegsInSpace I think you're wrong - the Daily Mail article linked above has this as the headline

Britain's monkeypox outbreak is linked to gay bars, saunas and Grindr, 86% of cases are in London and just TWO women have caught virus - as total UK infections rise to 196

If it circulates among children, people will be worried:

"Severe cases occur more commonly among children and are related to the extent of virus exposure, patient health status and nature of complications"

And

"The case fatality ratio of monkeypox has historically ranged from 0 to 11 % in the general population and has been higher among young children. In recent times, the case fatality ratio has been around 3–6%."

We closed schools and shut vulnerable children off from agencies that kept them visible during the pandemic. I very much hope this will be contained because I can't see people doing another lockdown. I personally wouldn't want one but if I thought this was circulating among children, I'd be thinking about my own decisions as I'm sure most parents would.

From an interview with Maria Van Kerkhove (WHO):

www.statnews.com/2022/06/01/monkeypox-response-challenges-maria-van-kerkhove-who/

It feels like there’s so much we don’t know about this virus. We don’t know the R-naught — how many people, on average, an infected person will infect. Though the transmission rate in a household in Nigeria, say, might not tell you a lot about how much the virus can spread if it gets into networks of men who have sex with a number of male partners.

I think that the behavior of this is quite different. Because we’re seeing spread through social networks, through sexual networks. If you look at the numbers of contacts per case in a household that’s obviously very different than what we’re seeing among the cases that have been detected so far in terms of how many sexual contacts they have had. And in this network sometimes there are anonymous contacts; we don’t always have the names of individuals that need to be followed up.

Our surveillance is biased so far towards MSM communities. We’ve been working with countries to expand that and several countries have expanded surveillance to emergency departments, and ID clinics, to dermatology clinics. But they’re not finding additional cases so far outside of the MSM community.

There have been a couple of health worker infections, but they were men who have sex with men. Based on the discussions that have been had with these cases, it’s far more likely that it’s MSM-related transmission than as a result of their occupation.

There are a number of women among the cases.

There are some women but we’re not seeing it expand like we have within the MSM community.

This should be an easy virus to contain. It needs much closer contact than something like covid and, as far as we know, people are not infectious before symptoms start. So contact tracing can work, but only if people know who their contacts are.

It's not an STI and it's not a 'gay disease' which means if it's not contained it will likely start spreading in the wider community.

If it starts circulating among children we will see school closures again.

You could equally claim that if Stonewall had made the announcement all the twittites would have nodded along and said "sounds like a sensible idea".

A pound to a penny if it had been Stonewall who'd made this announcement and not LGBA many of the (supportive of LGBA) posters here would have been calling SW homophobic.

Don't be daft. MNers on the whole are well educated and recognise sensible evidence based thinking when they see it.

Wrong.

Most of the posters here do not judge if something is right or wrong on the basis of who said it.

It tends to be the anti LGBA posters who do that.

When you have males describing women as Long Chu has:

The “barest essentials” of “femaleness” are “an open mouth, an expectant asshole, blank, blank eyes.” - Andrea Long Chu

There is no doubt in my mind that this is the same old, same old.

Maybe others are proud to include these people in their ‘tribe’, but they certainly should not be attempting to shame others for reviling the hatred towards females displayed by these people.

Datun · 02/06/2022 11:06

Helleofabore · 02/06/2022 10:49

The bitterness, hatred and jealousy is right there in Serano’s words.

I believe they have some other choice quotes describing females too. And all because some people, likely males, started allowing other males to use the words that women used to describe themselves.

And people ask why women believe this gender identity movement is misogynistic to the core.

Seranos misogyny is off the scale.

"While I never really believed the cliche that women were good for only one thing, I found that sentiment kept creeping into my fantasies... it's called forced feminisation".

Just imagine the justifiable outrage if someone had said this with “heterosexuality” replaced by another letter! It shines brilliant sunlight on true objectives….

Well, yes. Hearach thinks all lesbians, gays and bisexuals want to be part of Hearach's 'rainbow tribe'. While also managing to sneer at anyone whose sexuality Hearach doesn't consider 'cool' enough.

Reminds me of kids in primary 6 making up little gangs and then trying to mock anyone who's not in theirs.

Artichokeleaves · 02/06/2022 08:59

But this not a minor problem—it is systemic;

The systemic problem being - females being homosexual. And refusing to stop being homosexual on request to validate a male person's identity choice.

I'm done even debating this, it normalises these disgusting attitudes and utter lack of respect for females' bodies, right to a sexuality that is not controlled and directed by what male people want, and an inability to see that a female's perceptions are not predicated on what a male person tells them. People pushing this have a very serious problem.

People should only date people they are attracted to. If you don't want to date a trans person, don't date them! Seems simple.

Out of interest, if you think trans men are women, why do lesbians never date trans men?

Like TastefulRainbowUnicorn, I'm also strongly getting the vibe here that you don't know any gay people. I'm sure you won't believe me, but did you know that the transwoman Julia Serano wrote an article complaining about lesbians dating transmen and not transwomen. Grin And about transmen being in lesbian spaces!

extract

I’ve spent much of the last decade writing about trans woman exclusion and trans woman irrelevancy in queer women’s communities. You would think that by now, I would have little left to say about the subject, but this is not the case. In deciding what I would write about this time around, I wrestled with so many possible themes: for instance, discussing how my views on this issue have evolved over the years; critiquing the masculine-centrism of modern-day dyke communities; highlighting the need for heterogeneous queer spaces that are accepting of difference; explaining how trans male/masculine folks who claim a place in dyke spaces by emphasizing their lack of male genitals or their assigned-female-at-birth status royally screw over their trans sisters;

(continues)

One trans woman friend told me about how she recently met a cis dyke, and they were really hitting it off, until she realized that this person was misreading her for a person on the trans masculine spectrum. When my friend told the cis dyke that she was in fact a trans woman, the cis dyke seemed to immediately lose interest.

So, given all this, I figured that I would have better luck with personal ads, which are often driven more by shared interests rather than appearance or dress, and in which I can disclose my trans status beforehand. On numerous occasions I have looked over the “w4w” section of Craigslist, but it inevitably leaves me traumatized. There is so much trans hate speech on that site, and the very few ads that mention being open to trans are specifically looking for trans men or tranny bois, not trans women.

(continues)

Sexual attraction is a complex phenomenon, and of course there is lots of individual variation. I certainly do not expect every cis queer woman to swoon over me. And if it were only a small percentage of cis dykes who were not interested in trans women at all, I would write it off as simply a matter of personal preference. But this not a minor problem—it is systemic; it is a predominant sentiment in queer women’s communities. And when the overwhelming majority of cis dykes date and fuck cis women, but are not open to, or are even turned off by, the idea of dating or fucking trans women, how is that not transphobic? And to those cis women who claim a dyke identity, yet consider trans men, but not trans women, to be a part of your dating pool, let me ask you this: How are you not a hypocrite?

The Daily Beast

All bolding is mine.

so zero need for gay pride or diversity campaigns then.

Or workshops on how to 'overcome' the cotton ceiling.

Nine of ten cases have been in London:

Nine out ten monkeypox cases have been in London.

"Of the English cases, 86 per cent of those where a home address was reported were in London and only two were women, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said. A majority of the cases were in gay or bisexual men.

“Investigations to date have identified links to gay bars, saunas and the use of dating apps in the UK and abroad. Investigations continue but currently no single factor or exposure that links the cases has been identified,” UKHSA said in a statement.

The outbreak is the first time that the virus has been passed from person to person in England when travel links to a country where the disease is endemic have not been identified. The monkeypox strain being seen across Europe and the United States was first identified in west Africa."

What's not clear is - if the strain seen across Europe and the US is a new one, or not.

Trans women can be lesbians and trans men can be gay.

Trans people can also be straight or bisexual.

I know a really lovely gay couple where one is a transgender man and the other is a cisgender man.

Sadly, someone yelled 'faggots' at them the other day in the street while they were holding hands. Outrageous abuse they would never have received if they were straight.

So if someone wore black face, and was called a racial slur, that would actually make them black. And entitled to any programs designed to eliminate racism.

Got it.

As I said, absolute risible jibber jabber.

Also, in your world, it means that you're not trans, unless you pass.

I think you'll find that's transphobic.

Or, are you a woman if you're a biological woman, or are you woman if you look like a woman, but you're male, or are you a woman if you are male but you don't look like a woman?

Ludicrous nonsense. This batshittery says so much about the people who uphold it.

They shouldn't be allowed sharp objects.

Stealhsquirrelnutkin · 01/06/2022 21:50

Well, this article is very apt to some of the misinformation quoted in this thread.

Seems that overestimating the true number of homosexuals in the UK is surprisingly common. "Brits think 10 per cent of their fellows are bisexual (true: 1.3 per cent), while putting the gay and lesbian population at 15 per cent (true: 1.8 per cent)." So, no actual major increases compared to earlier years, just loads of ignorant people getting the numbers wrong.
