This seems to be a clear failure on the part of all adults involved, if what's reported here is accurate:

Girl ‘driven out of school for questioning trans ideology’

I have had The Crucible argument with dn. Her response is that this is different because they are right . Whaddayado?

Point out that the witch finders thought that they were right too. The slave owners of the deep south in the US, Pol Pot's followers - they were all absolutely convinced they were right and so justified in what they were doing.

Worth maybe explaining about the Nuremberg trials and the huge efforts gone to by the allies to treat war crimes and war criminals absolutely by the book, with defense lawyers, with every single care to do it objectively as would be done for any allied citizen, because there had to be a commitment to treating every person in an ethical way regardless of who they were, what they believed, what they had done, whether or not you were on their side or agreed with them. That's the contract that protects everyone equally. Because once you get into 'it's ok to treat THAT person like that because they're wrong and not in my gang' you're back into the dark ages, and all you ever have is the hope that you manage to stay in the currently fashionable group.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 17/05/2022 09:33

Agreed ResisterRex There are good reasons to protect the girl at the centre of this while the trans extremists appear to be running amok. Having seen the readiness with which they mask up and threaten women speaking, she needs protection.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/05/2022 09:30

I suspect Barker more than Hunt to be honest. Hunt has been very quiet on trans related issues since joining the HoL which suggests to me that the whole thing was a massive grift

I agree. One of the evangelical ones like Barker.

NotTerfNorCis · 17/05/2022 09:29

It's like Red Guard / Cultural Revolution behaviour.

Exactly what I was thinking. It's bullying in the name of ideology. I bet there were ringleaders, and I hope they can be identified and punished.

teawamutu · 17/05/2022 09:28

It was a private school, right? If I was paying a fortune to have my child's capacity for critical thinking destroyed, I'd be livid.

ResisterRex · 17/05/2022 09:26

I'm sure no one will but please don't identify the school. The Times hasn't and nor has TTrend.

It's worryingly easy to identify the school. Took me five minutes.

Hitler Youth knew they were right.
Butler Youth know they are right.

Both suborned by adults to be blind to the reality that their ideologies inherently involve the oppression of others.

'Religious extremism' nails it. That sixth form need taking to a version of The Crucible, which is getting to be more and more topical, and then to have it explained to them in small words. But those are kids are thinking -and behaving as they have been trained to do, by adults who should have either known better or not been allowed to try to evangelise and convert children for their own purposes.

CruCru · 17/05/2022 08:58

Yes, I saw this this morning. I can understand not naming the school at this point (presumably this would risk a bunch of nutters finding out who the girl is and she could do without that just before her exams). I’ll be surprised if the parents don’t bring a case against the school after her A levels.

My first thought was that it would be a school in London (was trying to work out which it could be) but it’s quite possible for it to be in the Home Counties - it isn’t that far for a member of the HoL to travel to.

BerthaLovelock · 17/05/2022 08:57

The trouble is that fanatics can’t see the free speech or reasonable debate argument. Others are just wrong , verging on hateful . And then when you combine trendiness and the mob….

I think these kids should be shown footage of the French lining the streets cheering the Germans as they rolled into Paris. Rather than the modern narrative that everyone was in the Resistance, this shows what happens when a few powerful voices prevail and the masses go along with it.

Doesn't the school have a duty of care towards the girl? Having caused such a ruckus are they not now almost morally obliged to bring in someone with opposing views? So maybe another Baroness should be paying them a visit and giving them a talk.

We have freedom of speech here still - it should be upheld. And the girls taught tolerance - regardless of their views. Now that would be a win.

Yes. The school also have a legal duty to present both sides of a political issue. Schools not doing their job is a huge part of the problem here. Christians aren’t allowed to hound Muslims round the playground, you can’t have a pro-Conservative policy lobbyist in unless you also give space to the other political parties, and schools aren’t allowed to present fanatical gender ideology as fact and hound out of the building any child who questions it. And yet they do.

It’s worth remembering that not so long ago our ancestors actually did burn women at the stake and impale people of different religions - humans can be awful and the education system is supposed to be one of the things that stops us reverting to that.

Anyway the (much better) transgendertrend article about the same incident is here:

Not useful to identify the school, however vaguely. The girl concerned has suffered enough and, if the usual suspects get hold of a name, it could seriously impact her future

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 17/05/2022 08:53

What a courageous young woman. This is the sort of act that should be discussed in interviews and yet I feel it would plausibly have to be concealed in order for her not to be rejected as an implicit threat to the harmony of good relationships.

For asking a very sensible question and in a wholly respectful way.

ChopinBoard · 17/05/2022 08:52

What an absolute disgrace, that poor girl

Signalbox · 17/05/2022 08:51

Good god, surely there needs to be some action taken in light of this.
Was it something the Baroness said that incited such a reaction?
It's like Red Guard / Cultural Revolution behaviour.
Trans ideology doesn't belong in schools.

yellowsuninthesky · 17/05/2022 08:34

sadly not unusual

I am sure it will come out what school and Baroness it was. And rightly so.

I'm sure it will come out. My worry would be the effect on this young lady as she begins sitting her A level examinations.

Oblomov22 · 17/05/2022 08:49

The response from the school reads really really badly.

Sadly I have no trouble believing this. My experience with our local secondary is to banish children to isolation (or library) at the drop of a hat. I am also minded of Lisa Keogh (albeit a university and not a school). Is there any parent on this thread who feels their child would be able to question trans ideology in their secondary school?

happydappy2 · 17/05/2022 08:37

The school definitely need to educate the girls that gender critical views are lawful to hold. One doesn't have to believe people can change sex...FFS these kids will be at Uni soon and should be able to see the truth in front of them, its so depressing they have been led to believe utter falsehoods.

yellowsuninthesky · 17/05/2022 08:34

mrshoho · 17/05/2022 07:35

That is a depressing read. The school has lost its senses. How they could allow the mob hounding of a student is disturbing.

Yes, the total silence from Hunt seems telling.
