Anyone else left wing and gender critical?

I'm to the left politically.
Support BLM and was at anti apartheid demos even back in the 80s
Fully support gay rights and again, have marched in the street for them from back in the 80s.
Strong feminist, attend feminist meetings.
Support refugees.
Very anti Brexit.
Feel ashamed of the levels of poverty in the UK.

I'm also gender critical and although I do support trans rights, in that, wear what you want, TWANW and have different needs and don't belong in women's sports, prisons etc. When I look around and see who I'm standing with on this though, I feel really uncomfortable.

When it comes to voting, no way would I vote for someone with Farage like views just because they were anti self ID.
Anyone else with similar views?

I don't care if people think I'm hard right because I am GC, same as I didn't care people thought I was hard left because I supported some of Corbyn's social policies. I know who I am and so do my friends and family which is all that matters to me.

ethelredonagoodday · 04/05/2022 10:07

Not RTFT (will later) but yes, I absolutely am. It pisses me off no end when people suggest that if you are GC you're also a hard right, religious fanatic!

Don't forget 'preference falsification'. Most people are afraid to say anything on the subject.

Most people, when spoken to in person, and feeling safe, will admit concerns and ultimately, agree with what are called 'GC' views but are in fact very simple and straightforward acknowledgement of basic reality - humans are sexually dichotomous mammals; it's not possible to change sex; females need, want and deserve spaces away from males in some instances; women are entitled to privacy and dignity under the Equality Act.

It's really quite basic.

Be honest, what proportion of left wingers you know, including feminists, are in any way GC? The reason I ask is because while most on these boards are GC the very large majority of those itrw that I know, aren't. In fact I would go further and say that people I know who were mildly left wing but in no way politically active will take up the cudgels on this subject as soon as its mentioned where as they wont on poverty or social division.
What % of the left are GC.?

Did you miss my response above?

While the right seem to be more aligned with what you are calling 'GC', (4:1) the left are still overwhelmingly supportive of views that align with what you call 'GC', (2:1) as shown very clearly in this recent poll.

Absolutely here - left leaning, socialist, anti brexit, trans rights are human rights etc - but not at the expense of womens rights and women s spaces ...

Apparently this makes me evil

Me. Former Labour Party member, politically active for a while, Corbynite.
Voted hard left (in effect a spoilt ballot) because I can’t bring myself to vote Labour this time.

Unsure whether I’ll be back in the fold by the time of the parliamentary elections, and live in a marginal seat.

My adult son and I are both left-wing and both despise the Gender Woo. We are also both pro-abortion, pro-contraception and 'religion critical'.

The thought of being compared to ring-wing nutters in America is risible.

The UK is nothing like North America, England especially so.

Yes, let’s not conflate the situation in the UK with the US. I am centre-right, a Remainer and didn’t vote Tory at the last election. Also GC.

Let’s not divide on political leaning.

Since voting in the UK isn't compulsory, isn't the simple solution to this who-do-I-vote-for dilemma to simply abstain from voting? That way the tories aren't being rewarded with your vote, and Labour will see they are losing votes from women. Win-win I would think.

Never. I can't not vote. Nor can I spoil it, though I understand the reasons some choose to do so.

That's how I used to approach it but if the Tories follow through with their recent comments on women's rights and safeguarding children, which Labour have no interest in, then I will vote Tory on this issue alone.

Tbh I live in a safe Tory area and am considering ticking the box for the Tory candidate with a note to say exactly why. It won't matter if it's counted as a spoilt ballot paper because it's a safe Tory seat anyway.

DomesticatedZombie · 04/05/2022 09:39

Full data tables of that recent Pollbase poll in the article linked, if you want to check them.

That is Scottish data, of course. We don't really have a 'left' here anymore - the SNP have stepped into the space that used to be occupied by the left.

'SNP and Labour voters were least likely to offer the biological definition, but still did so by a massive margin of more than 2:1, while Tory and Lib Dem voters were nearer 4:1'

Yes, left the Labour Party because of this and anti semitism, spoilt my ballot paper in last 2 elections. I can't speak for the future if the left don't get their act together and return to reality.

But that’s a non sequitur. Just because people say they’re going to vote Tory or posting links to the Daily Mail doesn’t mean those posters or anyone who agrees with that is now right wing. It just means they will vote Tory because of this issue and agree with the content of the article. It’s false to assume that everyone’s entire political persuasion changes as a result of those types of things.

This is how I see it. I don't want to vote Tory but I will based on this issue alone. I still consider myself liberal and fairly left leaning on lots of things but feminism means so much to me, I also have a 7yr old and a 9yr old, one of those being a DD and I will not silently stand by and watch her rights eroded.

I’m probably a bit more central than many of the pp, although very from lefty liberal space at younger age, but I agree with you.

this is too important to me and for my dd. Once we lose rights we won’t get them back

the whole thing makes me more politically motivated than any other issue has

Yes! I'm a proper bike riding, guardian reading, refill station, labour voting leftie and GC too. I don't talk to friends about it but I'm getting the impression most of them are also GC.
In fact I've only ever met anyone one person IRL who believes TWAW.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/05/2022 09:22

I'd say I am centre left in most areas, left in some.

endofthelinefinally · 04/05/2022 09:22

I am one of those people who feels I have no-one to vote for. I spoiled my ballot paper last time and wrote on it the reasons why. I always approach this issue with canvassers as a safeguarding issue. The last labour rep I spoke to said children must be free to be themselves. Somehow in their mind that means puberty blockers, cross sex hormones and surgery. There is no reasoning with them.

I don’t know how anyone could read FWR and think we’re anything other than predominantly left wing.

I think it's all the posters, on multiple threads, saying they'll be voting Tory and that they're the only party who care about women's rights. Also, RW influence, Daily Mail, Express, right wing broadcasting. Although even the BBC only ever seem to ask politicians on the left the 'what is a woman 'question. Unless of course I'm missing them quizzing Tories on this.

What it demonstrates is lack of support from traditional left wing parties and left wing media publications.

MrsRCBlack · 04/05/2022 09:19

Also left wing and GC here. So is DH. However a lot of my left wing friends are not GC and it's a point only contention. Also feeling politically homeless!

I am. I told my labour Councillor I'd left Labour because they aren't supporting women.
