Anyone else left wing and gender critical?

I'm to the left politically.
Support BLM and was at anti apartheid demos even back in the 80s
Fully support gay rights and again, have marched in the street for them from back in the 80s.
Strong feminist, attend feminist meetings.
Support refugees.
Very anti Brexit.
Feel ashamed of the levels of poverty in the UK.

I'm also gender critical and although I do support trans rights, in that, wear what you want, TWANW and have different needs and don't belong in women's sports, prisons etc. When I look around and see who I'm standing with on this though, I feel really uncomfortable.

When it comes to voting, no way would I vote for someone with Farage like views just because they were anti self ID.
Anyone else with similar views?

Some of us aren't 'lefties'. I suspect if I had been old enough when MacMillan was around I could have voted Conservative. But I can't conceive of voting for them as they have become now. I feel sorry for candidates in local elections who are much more in the MacMillan mould, decent and hardworking, who want the best for their communities. But decent and hardworking aren't words which can be applied to Johnson's Government.

So someone tell me - between the SNP and the Tories - who do I choose? Talk about devil and the deep blue C ...

I vote Tory.

Interesting thread. Nice to see how many of you despise anyone who doesn't share your lefty ideals.

Oh and for any of you who have voted SNP in the past- I hope you're pleased with yourselves. You supported one deranged ideology lacking any shred of common sense and well, look what we've got in Scotland now.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 05/05/2022 10:11

Well, I sincerely hope that you get what you wish for. The Tories may talk the talk but they certainly don't walk the walk when it comes to women's rights.

Exactly.

Peregrina · 05/05/2022 10:03

Here you go today's example of the Guardian drinking the Kool-Aid

Some points to make - no one objects to birthing partner as a term, because it can either be a husband/boyfriend or mother/sister/other female friend.

Someone who has had a double mastectomy for whatever reason won't be able to breastfeed - so obvious it ought to go without saying.

Transman - yep, well biologically he's still a woman. OK s/he had a CS but so do a lot of women.

And would you know, no comments opened on the article.

Peregrina · 05/05/2022 09:51

Such as myself…I had to hold my nose and vote Tory this morning because I can no longer trust Labour to protect women and girls.

Well, I sincerely hope that you get what you wish for. The Tories may talk the talk but they certainly don't walk the walk when it comes to women's rights. They might just do so I suppose if a few more of them put on dresses, high heals and slapped on the make-up - but then it would be men's rights they were supporting.

Better I think to spoil your vote. Easy for me, because we don't have elections.

ColMustardInTheLibrary · 05/05/2022 09:27

Your OP seems very disingenuous- FWR is chock full of left leaning voters who are now politically homeless.

Such as myself…I had to hold my nose and vote Tory this morning because I can no longer trust Labour to protect women and girls. I’ve never voted conservative before. I’m not ashamed of my vote today - it is the Labour Party who should be ashamed for driving me away. This is on them.

HermioneKipper · 05/05/2022 09:27

I think it’s basically all of us.

i can’t bring myself to vote Tory. I might spoil my ballot

Mumsnet is one of the UK's busiest online chat sites. Do politicians ever bother reading threads like these I wonder?

I'm fairly sure that their Spads are on here; but if Rishi Sunak's recent performance was anything to go by, they were reading the wrong threads - got stuck on weaning and pram parasols, never made it to the politics and feminism & women's rights.

He couldn't even say anything sensible about Food Banks, to which women contribute greatly in terms of supermarket donations and volunteer time.

Peregrina · 05/05/2022 09:10

If the Guardian or any other left-leaning news source were writing articles about these issues, we'd be sharing them too. Personally, I'd be delighted. But unfortunately they don't.

I have been a Guardian reader for decades, literally, but my oh my, they have really drunk the Kool-Aid on this one. Suzanne Moore got chased out some time ago, and do people like Zoe Williams, who I used to like, really think that someone with a penis and testicles, is anything other than a man?

I’m left wing and GC. I’d rather vote for a banana than a Tory. I’m happy to continue voting Labour (though would vote for the British Communist Party if they stood in my constituency - though oddly, imo, on here, there seems to be only reference to the known scumbags in powers as an alternative! Madness!)

WarriorNewAgain · 05/05/2022 07:00

I personally only know lefty feminists and lefty men who fight for this cause, indeed most appear to be in the greens.

Any green who understands and agrees with the values of the deep green resistance is both a true green and also knows what a woman is.

Just adding my voice to say I'm left wing and GC too.

Also quite confused about how the OP could have missed the fact that most GC women in the UK are left wing.

Maybe it's because articles from the Times, Telegraph and Daily Mail are shared on here so there's an assumption that that's what we're reading. Or that prominent GC women like M Forstater and Suzanne Moore speak through the Daily Mail rather than any other publication.

If the Guardian or any other left-leaning news source were writing articles about these issues, we'd be sharing them too. Personally, I'd be delighted. But unfortunately they don't.

I think though if we take a serious view of politics, rather than a check-list approach, we could ask whether those publications are really of the right and left in the way we imagine. The Guardian promotes a certain kind of liberalism and make-nice social redistribution, while being generally pretty liberal economically and radically individualist socially. And consistently shutting down ideas, either editorially or in BTL comments, that it is uncomfortable with. Which is to say, ideologically authoritarian.

Is that really the left?

MangyInseam · 05/05/2022 00:40

Well OP, I am a bit late to the conversation, but it seems to me that you are equating left wing with progressive. BLM is id politics, not left politics.

Meanderer · 04/05/2022 23:36

Yup absolutely left wing - 70s born eco socialist feminist and lesbian ally - and GC AF!
I’m agog that so many millenials have drunk the gender koolaid, I support XR but their trans pandering is odd given their “Tell the Truth” demands and the fact the environmental movement in the U.K. at least owes SO MUCH to women - and lesbian women especially.

fishingforflies · 04/05/2022 22:15

I'm one of the lucky ones.
I'm a leftie currently with Rosie Duffield as my MP.
That means I can vote Labour again knowing she will (hopefully) continue to fight for our right for separate safe spaces.

Until The Labour Party changes its position on supporting reform of the Gender Recognition Act they will never receive my vote either in Local or General elections.

The government has thankfully blocked reform to this act.

I'm not sure the GRA provides much in the way of gate keeping anyway. For a start, you don't even need one to access opposite sex spaces, including prisons anyway. Man Friday have done a great job highlighting this. Also, the hurdles to get a GRC aren't very high.

Floisme · 04/05/2022 19:58

Personally I think self ID could be the best thing to happen , if loads of women, and sympathetic men, just self ID as the opposite sex (why not) it would show what a complete nonsense the whole thing is faster than anything else.
Op if this is the level of your response to women who have made over 200 posts explaining their concerns to you, then frankly I regret the time I have put into reading and engaging with this thread. Have a nice evening.

This.

The Tories know the definition of woman, doesn't make them GC. Doesn't make them pro women.

I understand the argument that you can agree with some things a party stands for but not all. Pretty normal tbo. I just don't believe the Tories are GC and I don't believe they supports women's rights. Or at least not in a way that I would support womens rights.

The issue for me is that Labour’s direction would erode my rights as a woman

LunaMoonHare · 04/05/2022 18:24

This. And tbh I really dislike all the vitriol that is directed at people who choose to vote differently- I've noticed that a lot of the time it's directed from the left towards conservative voters.

I dont think anyone does believe labour would do better. Hence the politically homeless problem.

Not intended as vitriol to either side.

I don’t get this ‘tories are better with women’s rights’ ? How so ? They’ve not done anything yet to rectify the situation and neither have labour. But the conservatives are somehow to be trusted but labour aren’t ? All these changes have happened under a 12 year plus Tory administration - the transwomen in female prisons, the transwomen being admitted to domestic abuse groups, transwomen participating in female sports but labour bad. It really doesn’t make sense and I’m starting to think that some of these posters are in posting bad faith.

LunaMoonHare · 04/05/2022 18:56

@Kendodd I don't think anyone views Boris as a 'saviour' of women's rights. I agreed with his comments recently about women's rights, biological males in women's sports etc. I want to see the Tories back up recent comments with more action.

He's no saviour but on this one particular issue he is better than Keir Starmer.

Absolutely. It’s rife on here and I usually avoid it as the threads are bad with it.

I am very relieved to see other GC posters that get it though
