Anyone else left wing and gender critical?

I'm to the left politically.
Support BLM and was at anti apartheid demos even back in the 80s
Fully support gay rights and again, have marched in the street for them from back in the 80s.
Strong feminist, attend feminist meetings.
Support refugees.
Very anti Brexit.
Feel ashamed of the levels of poverty in the UK.

I'm also gender critical and although I do support trans rights, in that, wear what you want, TWANW and have different needs and don't belong in women's sports, prisons etc. When I look around and see who I'm standing with on this though, I feel really uncomfortable.

When it comes to voting, no way would I vote for someone with Farage like views just because they were anti self ID.
Anyone else with similar views?

I’ve been left-wing for as long as I can remember. I used to be a member of the Green Party and I still support most of their aims. I could never vote Tory - I despise most of what they stand for.

I’m also an atheist/agnostic and I struggle with the dualist belief that you can be born in the wrong body, or a male can be born in a female body (for example). I’m a non-believer in gender ideology.

That said, I know that gender dysphoria is real and can be very painful. And I believe that people should be treated in accordance with their gender identity in the vast majority of situations. I just wish that “be kind” wasn’t a one-way street.

SpindleInTheWind · 03/05/2022 22:22

My adult son and I are both left-wing and both despise the Gender Woo. We are also both pro-abortion, pro-contraception and 'religion critical'.

The thought of being compared to ring-wing nutters in America is risible.

The UK is nothing like North America, England especially so.

dontshootthepianist · 03/05/2022 22:21

Resolutely left wing after decades of being active in campaigns from womens rights on abortion to the poll tax rebellion. I havnt met any right wing GC feminists though I`m sure there are some. But many many of us, would walk through fire rather then vote Tory.

I find the idea that GC are very right wing so off base I’m wondering why it’s come about

It's come about because of right wing transphobia and homophobia. Because right wing believes men and women are different (and arguably unequal). Because GC views chime with the strand of right wing that says you cannot change sex (even though it is a view with a different foundation and direction). Because right wing media has given GC a voice when left wing media has not.

It has linked the 2. When politically they are poles apart.

CompleteGinasaur · 03/05/2022 22:20

Sorry about that - got interrupted, and most of what I posted has been better stated before i got back to stick that up! Wasn't a post at all when I started. Oops..

WhiteFire · 03/05/2022 22:19

I am very pleased that I do not have to vote on Thursday.

Random789 · 03/05/2022 22:16

This is a confusing thread. Almost every gender critical person I follow on Twitter, and the tone of almost every Mumsnet gender critical thread that I read, is squarely left wing.

I'm aware that there are right wing people who have broadly similar views, but i think of gender critical beliefs as being part of a feminist analysis and therefore primarily of the left.

And yet this thread, or at any rate the OP, seems to present gender critical beliefs as primarily coming from the right. Confused I feel that I am through the looking glass a bit.

corlan · 03/05/2022 22:16

If you go to a Woman's Place meeting, you will be in the company of hundreds of gender critical women who are from the political left. Like others, I'm politically homeless and honestly don't think I'll vote on Thursday - for the first time in 40 years

CompleteGinasaur · 03/05/2022 22:15

Almost identical views, Kendodd. Same age roughly, to judge by 80s demos - we may well have been on the same ones! Very similar if not identical positions on all the mainstream policies you mention. Lifelong Labour Party member until I could no longer swallow their Stonewall Law nonsense. And I think I would have had the same distaste for those you appear to think you will necessarily be aligned with, should you "come over to the dark side..."! That's just the thing , though. I really think you have a mistaken idea of who Gender Critical feminists are, or are aligned with - I personally would not pee on Nigel Farage if he were on fire even if he is (temporarily, opportunistically, desperately) anti self ID. Donald Trump might tell me the sky is blue but just because I agree with him about that doesn't mean I agree with him about probably anything else. And no one will expect you to start going on demos or outing yourself at work or on social media. Just lurk and read if you like, ask questions of the women on here (the knowledge base is astounding, as is the kindness). Certainly no one's going to try to make you support or believe or demonstrate for anything you haven't come to your own conclusions about. (I actually find it quite amazing that you haven't noticed that an awful lot of women on this board share roughly your stated political alignment/evolution!).

wordsandmusic · 03/05/2022 22:14

I have similar views to you @Kendodd, as do many of my friends and family. I suppose lots of left-wing people who don't think about it much, or don't know the full extent of the issues, view trans people as just another oppressed minority that deserves support. I think this is especially the case for teens and young people. Of course when you go deeper and read more (in particular about what is happening to children) it's hard to see how you can not be gender critical.

Cannot vote Tory but will not vote for any group who thinks being female is something you can identify into.

I would vote for almost anyone to get the Tories out. They've done enormous damage to the country. Tory austerity killed 100,000 people even before covid. And their reckless disregard for the peace in NI. Oh and the lying and cronyism. No way would I vote for them. Frankly, I'd rather have self ID, I think that would do less damage to women than Tory policies. They've practically made rape legal with their cuts to courts and police.

See this is why so many women feel politically homeless. They don't want to vote Tory but I honestly see the introduction of self ID as being as utterly damaging and awful for women as the issues you describe, the cuts to courts, the poverty and cost of living crisis. Awful for womens rights and for safeguarding children.

Kendodd · 03/05/2022 22:11

GC doesn’t automatically mean very right wing. Or even mildly for some.
Yes I know, my left wing views sit comfortably with being GC myself. Maybe I have just been reading the wrong threads on here and getting the wrong impression. I suppose it's not helped by the MSM ie the Mail and Express.

Electricfireplace · 03/05/2022 22:11

Yes, left wing and GC here too.
I get to vote for SNP (nope! According to them no men ever try to conceal who they are to access women only spaces! 🙄)
Or Scottish conservative.
Great.

IcakethereforeIam · 03/05/2022 22:09

Leftwing here, politically homeless too. I've never noticed a particularly right-wing vibe on fwr, perhaps elsewhere on MN?

MarshaBradyo · 03/05/2022 22:08

Squealier · 03/05/2022 22:08

Left wing and GC here. Don't know what on earth to do about voting on Thursday but am seriously considering spoiling my ballot in protest.

most of us OP
....how did you not know this???

WhiteFire · 03/05/2022 22:07

I am left of centre and also politically unstuck.

I don't think seeing fault with XR or the BLM Movement makes one right wing though.

LunaMoonHare · 03/05/2022 22:06

The GC posters on here all seem very right wing, slagging off the 'woke' by which I mean TRA but also BLM and XR etc. I don't feel I fit with the GC posters on here. Maybe I'm just on all the wrong threads.

I don't see this much on here, In fact there are lots of threads discussing feeling politically homeless- many women who have been fully paid up LP members who have been told they are no longer wanted. Many comments about not being able to vote Tory as well.

parietal · 03/05/2022 22:05

yes. And i'll still vote for the left-wing parties because I think they will do more to help women by doing something about cost-of-living and the NHS etc. I can't ever vote Tory no matter what they say on this topic.

but I'll keep talking about GC ideas and asking questions where I can.

georgarina · 03/05/2022 22:05

Left wing and GC
There's no contradiction between my left wing beliefs and my belief in preserving women's identity, rights and protections - they are one and the same

MarshaBradyo · 03/05/2022 22:05

Kendodd · 03/05/2022 22:00

Except, Rosie Duffield, a Labour MP is the most outspoken on this.

The GC posters on here all seem very right wing, slagging off the 'woke' by which I mean TRA but also BLM and XR etc. I don't feel I fit with the GC posters on here. Maybe I'm just on all the wrong threads.

I don’t think this is correct

GC doesn’t automatically mean very right wing. Or even mildly for some.

LunaMoonHare · 03/05/2022 22:03

I'm left-wing but firmly GC. Politically homeless, as others have said.

I'm almost glad that where I live is a safe Tory seat/council ward. I cannot vote labour. Or any of the other captured parties. But the local MP and councillor are actually decent and also GC.

Violetparis · 03/05/2022 22:01

I don't the right have managed to own being gender critical, I think it cuts across all political parties/sides.
