He is launching an inquiry into the treatment of children and is concerned that other issues are ignored once gender identity is mentioned.

It looks like things are changing!

Many trans activists hate the Tavi and the GIDS system. Their experiences are of medical ‘gatekeeping’ and delay. So practitioners at that service might actually regard themselves as being the ones who (in many cases) say no, you don’t have persistent gender dysphoria and we’re not referring you for cross-sex hormones.

But even so, the underlying belief at the Tavi is that (as their spokesperson said today), it’s right ‘not to assume a particular outcome is best for any child’. Because at the heart of it is this belief that there is such a thing as a ‘trans child’, and they are trying to discern which of the children are these children.

But I think we may have to get to a position where we do assume that dangerous puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and surgeries are not the best outcome for any minor. There is so much evidence that children don’t develop a stable identity until later. So although some of these children might persist in a sex-incongruent ‘identity’ into adulthood, there is no reliable way of knowing which of them will, and therefore in at least some (and it seems to be a majority) of cases, you may be instilling a sense of ‘trans identity’ that wouldn’t otherwise have emerged, or you may be ignoring other, serious symptoms and conditions.

Yes, your middle paragraph is spot on. The erroneous, unscientific, ludicrous narrative that you can be “born in the wrong body” has become deeply entrenched and a generation of young people brainwashed into thinking that this is a fact.

Critical thinking has gone by the wayside here but by God I wish it was encouraged more in schools and universities.

tabbycatstripy · 23/04/2022 09:37

Let’s have it indeed. All of them in a room in front of people who are skeptical of their claims. If they’re right, their case will be heard. If they’re wrong, we’ll all see it.

Another tweeter: ‘The Tavistock and Portman Trust sees 2.5k children a year - 200 of whom access hormones.” So 9/10 don’t - what do people want that number to be?’

Yes, the answer is zero, Of course.

This is where conflating gender dysphoria with being gay shows up the agenda.

If it's something that needs extreme treatment which permanently prevents children maturing, makes them sterile and unable to orgasm, then there has better be a bloody good medical reason for it.

Why on earth wouldn't the ideal number be zero?

Because it shows it all up as a belief system, not based in medical science.

And Javid knows this. There is no scientific basis to it. None.

He's now asking what is it ??

And the next question must be and who is pushing it.

Ask them Sajid. Ask stonewall to define it all, with citations.

Get the 3 reps of stonewall in a room and 3 gc female equivalents and ask them!

See the workings out in real time. Let's have it.

GibbonsGoatsGibbons · 22/04/2022 23:55

Wow I think Javid actually gets it.

I think that most people with any degree of intelligence “get it” but are scared not to be part of the “progressive” gang.

Signalbox · 22/04/2022 23:53

I'm cautious about this is there an election they need brownie points for?

Might just have to give the Tories credit for doing the right thing for once.

I'm not sure there is a politician, living or dead, who would be that cynical.

Javid seems to have taken this very seriously and to be acting in a manner that will have to carry on whether he is in post or not.

The Cass Review didn't open a door, it is the wedge that firmly keeps that door wide open!

PronounssheRa · 23/04/2022 09:30

I imagine if you are an adult whose life is completely wrapped up in the notion of 'trans' children, say because of decisions you made for your own children or because of your employment, or because these children provide a palatable cover to introduce laws in the style of Dentons then any review must be unnerving.

Artichokeleaves · 23/04/2022 09:28

They're getting there. The 'militant' word to describe the lobby says volumes about the perceptions now in Whitehall, very likely based on experience.

Imperio seems to be wearing off.

DisappearingGirl · 23/04/2022 09:09

I agree this is fantastic news and it sounds like Javid gets it.

BUT I'm only prepared to give the Tories so much credit for this. One reason this situation has occurred (though by no means the only reason) is because of the chronic underfunding of the NHS, especially mental health services including CAMHS, and waiting times of up to 2 years for things like autism diagnosis. As stated in the Cass review, addressing this properly requires adequate funding of generalised, holistic psychological support for children and teens.

Whatwouldscullydo · 23/04/2022 09:02

Which is undeniable. They didn’t keep records. They didn’t perform proper diagnoses. They don’t even have (as far as I am aware) a firm evidence base for the causes of the condition they say they are ‘treating’ (gender dysphoria in children is caused by ‘being trans’ - what’s that, then?)

Always always always anger at the wrong people..its the Tavistock and these other organisations that have screwed everything up for them. If there was any medical evidence, records, transparency of outcomes, proper monitoring etc this would not be happening.

Instead we are the issue for pointing out the failures.

Why should trans medicine be exempt from progress. If we never looked fir better way, if we never took any notice of those things not working we'd still be trepanning, or blowing smoke up arses.

ChopinBoard · 23/04/2022 09:01

Meanwhile, there are plans for a new 'gender' clinic in Brighton, egged on by the Green-led council.

"The news comes just weeks after a letter from Green councillors Hannah Clare and Steph Powell to April’s meeting of the council’s health overview and scrutiny committee, which called for a review of trans healthcare and an update on opening a gender identity clinic in the city.

Cllr Clare, who chairs the children, young people and skills committee, said: “I’m really delighted that following a request from Green councillors, NHS England has revealed their exciting plans.

“This will mean so much to many people who access gender-affirming healthcare and I look forward to hearing more about the plans. In the meantime, we will continue to scrutinise the state of healthcare for trans people in our city.”

tabbycatstripy · 23/04/2022 08:58

Another tweeter: ‘Pretty clear that Javid made his mind up before calling for an inquiry. But comparing medical support for trans kids to child abuse is crass, prejudiced and cruel.’

Javid is allowed to regard this as a medical scandal. He’s elected and serving as Health Secretary. This is on his watch.

But he’s not saying ‘medical support’ for ‘trans kids’ is child abuse. He is expanding GIDS services in line with the recommendations of the interim Cass report.

He is saying the approach that says children should be given puberty blockers and sex hormones (rather than prompt access to a very good psychiatrist?), may have resulted in harm, and that this situation overall is comparable to Rotherham, because adults have turned a blind eye to that harm in the name of their own ideology, or out of fear of being labelled prejudiced.

Which is undeniable. They didn’t keep records. They didn’t perform proper diagnoses. They don’t even have (as far as I am aware) a firm evidence base for the causes of the condition they say they are ‘treating’ (gender dysphoria in children is caused by ‘being trans’ - what’s that, then?).

dontshootthepianist · 23/04/2022 08:53

This a very good counter to howls of protest from the TRA camp:
Trans orgs should welcome this sort of scrutiny. They often state as fact how few children have regrets or go on to detransition but in reality lack the evidence for claiming that. If they are right then this will provide evidence for that claim.
Why wouldnt you want all your previous claims about "trans" kids justified?!

Rowlingfan · 23/04/2022 08:53

I’m really pleased that this investigation has been launched and I’ve emailed Sajid Javid to say that. The bigger the positive response the better. Email details of MPs are available online.
It’s worth being vocal when a politician seems to be doing the right thing and asking the right questions.

Whatwouldscullydo · 23/04/2022 08:49

Another example of the double think. The idea that children are capable.of consenting while the adults around them are paranoid, delusional, and incapable of being rational.to the extreme demonstrative of many of the traits one might view as showing capacity to consent is lacking.

beastlyslumber · 23/04/2022 08:49

This is very encouraging news!

tabbycatstripy · 23/04/2022 08:42

‘If medical intervention and transition is right fir the child and absolutely the best thing then what harm would the research/investigation etc do? The outcome would be the same right? Why be afraid?’

They will have convinced themselves firmly that Conservatives hate them (and hate ‘trans children’) , and because this is part of the culture war (which it is) it can’t be about safeguarding children. People who go round accusing everyone of trying to kill them all the time aren’t the most rational when it comes to assessing the true motivations of others.

mum61 · 23/04/2022 08:39

I think the Conservative party have seen the reaction of women (plus Many gay and lesbian voters to Keir starmer ,David Lammy, Emily Thornberry etc pretending they can't define what woman is ,along with the Cass report into poor standards of care to people with gender dysphoria and thought......This is a wedge issue .
Gender ideology is being scrutinised and its unravelling....

Whatwouldscullydo · 23/04/2022 08:39

Mimmymum is furious. Her Twitter is all capitals & exclamation marks

See as i said i dont understand this. If medical intervention and transition is right fir the child and absolutely the best thing then what harm would the research/investigation etc do? The outcome would be the same right? Why be afraid?

DISGUSTING!!!!!

mrshoho · 23/04/2022 08:33

Finally common sense has entered the room. This should now allow organisations and individuals freedom to speak out without fear. Children have been harmed for too long though.

It will be interesting to see how the Labour Party respond.

tabbycatstripy · 23/04/2022 08:28

Another tweeter: ‘The Tavistock and Portman Trust sees 2.5k children a year - 200 of whom access hormones.” So 9/10 don’t - what do people want that number to be?’

For children, that number might well be zero. I can accept that there might be a child, or ten children, whose dysphoria is so strong and persistent that cross-sex hormones are the best option for them before they are 18.

But there is also a possibility that there is no such child. That psychological treatments might be better and might help all these young people be reconciled with their sex.

Since we have no good data, no follow-ups, and no understanding of the reasons for the huge increase in young females with dysphoria, how would we know?

That’s how we know this is ideological. People who are not ideological in their approach are curious.

Whatwouldscullydo · 23/04/2022 08:28

This is a relief to read. I have never understood why, when medicin and laws around medicine allow individuals able to consent, able to choose their courses of treatment or refuse treatment all together, one particular group of people seem to take it all so personally. The reality is if one person closes one course as it's what's right fir them, it says precisely nothing about the course of treatment someone else has chosen. Just because one person refuses cancer treatment so they can go travelling around the world while they feel ok, doesnt mean that they are saying everyone should do that. No one should be having treatment they don't want or feel isn't right for them to validate the feelings of strangers.

Its ridiculous it was ever thought that teenage females and adult males would ever have the same needs socially, medically and psychiatrically.

If someone.is secure in their choices then what does it matter what someone else does.

sashagabadon · 23/04/2022 08:26

I think Jarvis gets the issues clearly and deeply. I think Boris does as well. It is a scandal just waiting to blow open.
