A Detailed Look At “The Family Sex Show”

Just for clarity & in case anyone jumps at the chance to call me a right-winger bent on denying women reproductive rights: I’m a socialist agnostic who has protested anti-abortionists.

And I know a child safeguarding hazard when I see one.

Performances planned in Bath, Bristol and Norwich.
John Lydon tried to speak out.

Here's a clip of John Lydon being interviewed by Piers Morgan. The clip includes interview footage from 1978 where JL talks about Jimmy Savilles behaviour being an open secret, he knew as he spoke that part of the interview would be cut.
It’s things like this that keep me motivated to do my tiny bit in stopping anything of this nature drifting forwards unchallenged. I’m sure many people thought ‘Well it’s awful, but what can I do..?’ Or ‘Someone else will stop him’.

But if not us then who? Everyone seems to be turning a blind eye to the Family Sex Show, which I think is the most dangerous ‘entertainment’ since Savile in terms of openly normalising child involvement in sexuality.

SeanChailleach · 16/04/2022 20:02

It was in FWR sex and gender - where is the one you started?

Organictangerine · 16/04/2022 20:00

@SeanChailleach

Thanks *@Organictangerine* there was already a thread but it has drifted down the list.
Ohhh has it? Which category is it in?

@MangyInseam

It occurred to me that one way to think about it is, if it were a film, what would the maturity rating be?

he film rating system isn't perfect, and films and theater aren't identical, but it could be suggestive. I think it would certainly not be rated for age 5.

It may scrap by with a U12A but a rating of 15 would be more likely.

www.bbfc.co.uk/about-classification/classification-guidelines

www.bbfc.co.uk/rating/12

U12A

Nudity
There may be nudity, but in a sexual context it must be brief and discreet.

Sex
Sexual activity may be briefly and discreetly portrayed. Moderate sex references are permitted, but frequent crude references are unlikely to be acceptable.

www.bbfc.co.uk/rating/15

15

Nudity
There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context. Sexual nudity may be permitted but strong detail is likely to be brief or presented in a comic context.

Sex
Sexual activity may be portrayed, but usually without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour. Repeated very strong references, particularly those using pornographic language, are unlikely to be acceptable. Works whose primary purpose is sexual arousal are unacceptable.

I’ve started a new thread to try to inform parents who may not be aware that the School of Sexuality Education is delivering ‘education’ in their child’s school. Given their connections with the Family Sex Show, I think parents deserve to know.

I think it's possible this was created with secondary school pupils in mind. And then at some point something's gone wrong and someone's opened up the age rating. Perhaps they don't understand the concept of 'age appropriate'.

TBH I think it would be questionable regardless of the age of the children; to aim it at 5 yos is just incredible.

The Family Sex Show is produced by School of Sexuality, who do workshops in schools. If you are unhappy with the theatre show, you might want to check if your school has booked them. Mine has and the email was titled like "Yr10 workshop in school on date". The sort of thing i would barely glance at if I was busy.
Good point. I think this is worthy of a new thread if I’m honest? (I can start but didn’t want to tread on your toes)

It seems very insidious

ResisterRex · 16/04/2022 18:50

But the School of Sexuality Education...it's another one twisting language:

schoolofsexed.org/blog-articles/2019/4/11/porn-nudes-and-other-digital-phenomena-how-can-we-best-support-young-people

"Digital intimacies" indeed. I'm so tired of this shit.

I only see refs to secondary ed. Do they work with 5 year olds?

The BBC as far as i am concerned have a huge part to play in not only the Saville cluskerfuck, but the fact that they lock women up for non payment of licence fees, and do not report on male rapists then being locked up with those women.

It is astonishing that they just get away with it year upon year upon year.

It was reported that Jill Dando was going to expose the P ring at the BBC and look what happened to her.

ExMachinaDeus · 16/04/2022 18:10

Thanks @MrsOvertonsWindow and @Organictangerine

Organictangerine · 16/04/2022 18:08

It would be censorship if we were campaigning against a show for adults because we felt it was ‘too racy’.

Do I believe the show is being hosted and acted by full on, raging paedophiles? No. Do I believe there is an element of… titillation perhaps for some of the actors to get naked in front of children? Perhaps, let’s face it, none of the blokes I know would entertain the idea. I think another aspect is that it aims to indoctrinate children with its very strong gender ideology from a young age.

ExMachinaDeus
"So this whole controversy makes me a bit uncomfortable"
You're right to feel uncomfortable and it's always right to check that we're not over reacting to something. In this case, I believe that the safeguarding component overrides all the issues about censorship.
Society must protect 5 year old children from adults who seek to groom them into eroding their boundaries - whether because they're predators or because their own narcissism impairs their ability to prioritise children's safety

Time after time society investigates serial abuse / grooming and we all wring our hands at the outcomes and promise to do better next time. And time after time incidents like this demonstrate that the demands and needs of adults take precedence over the rights of children to safet. And the capture of organisation like the NSPCC by the porn lobby ensures that they'll never prioritise children's safeguarding if it means having difficult conversations with a group of adults.

Fingers crossed that the Daily Mail (who are doing sterling work at the moment in reporting all sorts of predatory behaviour) will have a reporter outside the venue challenging any parent taking a primary aged child into the venue.

@ResisterRex

John Lydon and Jerry Sadowitz both said something about Savile. It would be interesting to see if they were the only ones or if there were others.
I was a child back then, in Leeds. But it was well known in Leeds to not go near savile. Pretty much all adults warned against him. I've heard since that quite a few hcps did their best to keep him out of the hospitals. Most were ignored, a few were threatened with losing their job and it was known that he had many friends in high places like police officers, chief constables and the like. Going against him meant trouble coming your way. So the safest way was warning the kids.
EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 16/04/2022 17:48

@ResisterRex

The only others who spoke out were regular non-famous women I'm sure. The ones who did their best to protect the children they knew about.

Meirion Jones tried for years to track down what was going on. The trail kept going cold, and he only managed to prise the lid off once Savile died.

I wonder how many women in the industry left it and were forever destined to remain "non-famous" IYSWIM because they spoke to managers or colleagues about it?

There were reports of Savile that were so disturbing that Roger Jones rejected him from having any involvement with Children in Need.

www.theguardian.com/media/2012/oct/29/children-in-need-chairman-jimmy-savile

There was an amazing thread on MN (that I can't find so it may have been deleted) with reports from people's family members who were living in Yorkshire at the time and Savile had been notorious for decades. There was a clip where Savile spoke about his intention to assault and have sex with "young birds" on a sponsored hill walk (iirc) and everybody laughed because they assumed he was joking. Local councillors knew he wasn't and forbade their daughters to be part of the retinue.

Not the right thread but another interesting one about the photographer David Hamilton that says a lot about what was accepted in plain sight.

ExMachinaDeus · 16/04/2022 17:22

Yes, @PurgatoryOfPotholes I think I need to as well! My main knowledge is reading accounts of her attempts to sue Michael Bogdanov for his direction of Howard Brenton's play, Romans in Britain in which there's an anal rape - a kind of metaphor of the Romans fucking over (ancient) Britons in the same way that Brenton thought the British were fucking over Ireland at the time.

It was acting, not real, and this was clear in the court hearing. It did make her a figure of fun, because it suggested a deep misunderstanding of fictional representation, acting, make-believe. I've also seen, very close up, an attempt by a ministerial advisor to cut the funding of a theatre company they decided was "too political" (ie the "wrong" politics) without having seen the show. I was told that this person didn't need to see the show - they knew from the title and description that it was "wrong."

The fact was, the political views the play/theatre company performed were simply ones which criticised that particular government's policy on a hot political topic of the time.

So this whole controversy makes me a bit uncomfortable. Not saying I'm correct however, and many posts on this thread are really interesting & obviously more expert on child safeguarding thsn I am!

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 16/04/2022 17:18

And didn't they ignore Saville so hard...that he basically abused people in plain sight and nobody did a fucking thing about it.

Apart from the older women who tried to keep him out of the hospital wards.

Valorised Savile and demonised older women who expressed concerns about the protection of children.

SAMO in new clothes and new ideological pretences but Same Old Sacred Caste.

There's a reason some of us have the experience of living in such a persistent state of déja vu that if we reported it to an HCP they'd have to recommend investigation for a neurological disorder.
