www.theguardian.com/film/2022/apr/08/fantastic-beasts-and-where-to-cancel-them-how-the-wizarding-world-lost-its-magic

The phone line between Stonewall & the guardian must be red hot at the moment. After yesterdays patronising “dining across the divide”
‘And so gentle reader I met a TW and they were nice and I learned the error of my ways and was so grateful to be educated. Thank you Guardian, give TW all the things’ piece yesterday plus Zoe Williams “be kind you bigots I’ve never needed a single sex space myself” article, today we have “jkr has upset the kids and now no one cares about Harry Potter anymore”

Can’t wait to see what they come up with tomorrow!

May I suggest that people posting links to Guardian articles also/instead post an image of the article (if this is allowed)? I know the Guardian is "free to read", but their currency is clicks, and I am trying to avoid giving them any clicks.

A few years back I always had a tab open on the Guardian and refreshed it all through the day, but have weaned myself from that.

@DameHelena

I actually didn't mind Dining Across the Divide, apart from the sports bit – obviously a transwoman should put down their natal gender. This individual might 'only' be knocking a woman from 500th place to 501st, but under the same rules another transwoman can and will knock a woman from 1st place to 2nd. Which manifestly isn't fair.
I minded the fact that the 'divide' here was between a transgender woman and someone uninformed about the issues. That's not the way the divide works.
DalarnaHorses · 08/04/2022 14:38

Surprisingly lots of support for JK in The Guardians FB post, or at least acknowledgement of the obvious hatchet job.

Fantastic Beasts one was awesome, I loved it.
Nr 2 was a stinker. But the Third one always bucks up in these franchises and I just cant wait!

But the Guardian, OY vey, I dont know if I’ll renew the subscription. They have all summer to convince me though

Ryan Gilbey’s review was a clear indication of how he sees trans-women as just women. The title in itself A Fantastic Woman just shows how the notion of TWAW is trying to become more mainstream in the visual arts. People like Ryan Gilbey are more than happy to obliterate female only spaces because they actually believe that trans-women should be a “protected minority”. They view women as somehow more “privileged” thereby trying to diminish all the years of progress for women to actually have a voice. It’s so easy just to shout “TERF!” and then claim victimhood when shown the facts rather than engaging in actual dialogue.

Sorry, I hope I’m not derailing the thread.

TheRealBoswell · 08/04/2022 13:33

Exactly, but it doesn’t bode well when TRAs don’t just want to be considered “women” but now are trying to push the angle that what it means to be biologically female is somehow scientifically inaccurate. As though somehow new developments in science will prove that they too are the same as a biological female.

SidewaysOtter · 08/04/2022 13:33

TRAs like to believe that by not supporting them, you’re anti-trans

Don't they just. It ties into all this "Hearing an opinion I don't like is literal violence" hogswash.

brainbowbroad · 08/04/2022 13:27

TRAs like to believe that by not supporting them, you’re anti-trans

It's absolutely ridiculous that they think this, if they took the time to engage they'd see that we are very pro-trans and are simply interested in the safeguarding of women and children.

bellinisurge · 08/04/2022 13:09

Last gasps of the desperate. Spoke to a colleague who is very sniffy about JKR's literary work. They said "I absolutely agree with her on everything she has said about women's rights".
This mean girl shit just shows them up for what they are. More sunlight

Had the misfortune of reading that after a FB shared it proclaiming it an "interesting" read. Well, it isn't, it's a load of claptrap, with extra virtue signalling points by appealing we all donate to Mermaids et al at the end! I don't know any other cause like it.

The Guardian piece is a disgrace. Boot in, easy clicks, no comments to answer to or right to reply, job done.

LeftFootForward · 08/04/2022 13:05

Glad to see a thread on these 2 articles. I read Dining across the Divide and was appalled at how biased, dismissive of the womans opinion on trans/sports and 'nothing to see hear' it was. It was nothing short trans propaganda.
I tried to read the film review but only got part way though. It was so snide and nasty it made me embarrassed for a once excellent newspaper.
I used to love reading the Guardian. I grew up in a Guardian reading household, solid Lib Dem/Labour leftie liberals. We all read the Times now, even my dad who voted Corbyn for goodness sake 😅

TheRealBoswell · 08/04/2022 13:05

TRAs like to believe that by not supporting them, you’re anti-trans.

A quick google shows that Ryan Gilbey is either gay or queer, some of whom believe they are trans-allies. He clearly is a TRA as evidenced by his raving review. And as such, many if not all TRAs seem very keen on hating JKR because from their warped perspective it undermines what they believe.

lanadelgrey · 08/04/2022 13:05

As I often say, it is worth writing in. A sensible editor would take note and pass the comments on to the writer

Peregrina · 08/04/2022 12:55

I also told them that I noted they hadn't the guts to open up the comments. Personally, I am not a particular fan of Harry Potter although I did enjoy the first book.

Peregrina · 08/04/2022 12:53

I wrote to the Guardian yesterday to complain about the Zoe William's article, especially the last paragraph. I am really angry, women like JKRowling have worked bloody hard for their successes.

Whereas these transwomen in sport find that they are not good enough to win as men, so they will have a go as women.

Palmfrond · 08/04/2022 12:52

the author makes excellent points, because obviously, and as everybody knows, children know and really give a flying fuck about gender controversies. Not.

88sausagefactory88 · 08/04/2022 12:33

@LittleWhingingWoman

Does the writer of the article identify as a penis?
Love this
Igneococcus · 08/04/2022 12:26

“jkr has upset the kids and now no one cares about Harry Potter anymore”

I was in Edinburgh this week and there were several Harry Potter tours around while I was there, large groups too with people of all ages, larger than the offer holder campus tours which were happening that day. Some people clearly still care about HP.

Nancydrawn · 08/04/2022 11:52

I think one can separate one's feelings about JKR from the fact that the Fantastic Beasts franchise is really, really bad.

SidewaysOtter · 08/04/2022 11:46

PPs are right about the spite that the Guardian is heaping down these days, but that's cognitive dissonance for you. The more it becomes apparent that the emperor isn't wearing any clothes, the louder the panicked howls have to become that HE ABSOLUTELY IS, OF COURSE HE IS because the alternative is accepting they were catastrophically wrong.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 08/04/2022 11:38

One of the actors causing disgrace is non-binary apparently.

Awkwardy · 08/04/2022 11:31

@DomesticatedZombie

It would be amusing if JK bought the Guardian.

I don't mean like bought a copy. I mean, bought the company.

Jo, if you're one of us, top tip right here

OJs face at the news!

MoltenLasagne · 08/04/2022 11:26

I did notice on the adverts for the latest film it directly names JK Rowling (something like JK Rowling invites you blah blah).

I wondered whether that was due to backlash from audiences or JK herself telling them that "the stories belong to the fans not the author" is not something that would really hold up in court.

Justme56 · 08/04/2022 11:20

On a more positive note my DS school (big academy with 1500 pupils) recently held a Harry Potter evening. Lots of students went and it was a great night. The London centric champagne socialists can witter on as much as they like - no body is listening!
