Nancy tweets:

"Really thoughtful thread on the need to expand gender affirming care, including for people who detransition"

Is the next move from the TQ+ people going to be a move into "gender affirming care" for those transitioning back? This is the thread tweeted, from someone who describes themselves thus:

detransitioned/retransitioned FtMtF virago 🗡 (any/all) 🌱 anti-essentialist feminist 🌿 bisexual tomcat 🐱

Thread
twitter.com/ShabnakA/status/1512060146943463432
"As trans visibility and access to trans care increases, more people will seek out transition for dysphoria or gender incongruence. Some will decide that transitioning wasn't for them, because their goals didn't pan out, their dysphoria wasn't mitigated, social pressure, etc.
Even if the rate of detransition stays the same, the absolute number will increase as trans people increase, too. This is not inherently negative, but what is bad is the lack of support and resources for people who ultimately decide that they need to detransition.
Ignoring or writing off the needs of detransitioners as too niche to matter not only harms us, but also trans people who would benefit from better information on transition options, navigating doubts/fears, social adjustment, and working through regrets.
I'm lucky, in a sense, that I don't regret any of my transition and am happy I did it. Not all detransitioners feel the same way. We can validate those experiences without universalizing them, or utilizing them as a prescription against transition care.
We can recognize that what is profoundly positive for some people may be very negative for others. Some people will have regrets, some will make mistakes. Some would've continued transitioning under different circumstances, some wish they'd never done so. All are okay to feel.
The tragedy isn't that people are allowed to make decisions regarding their bodies or self-expression. The true tragedy is that most of the people who seek such options do so with very little support and limited info. It's cause for an expansion of resources, not a restriction."

@ResisterRex

Hirples to make it even more confusing, I thought that was promised in Scotland but was - in the end - not in the proposals. Might be wrong though
I have a feeling (nothing more than that) that a consultation asked whether detransition should be allowed, and if so, how often.

I also have a feeling that I replied yes (thinking of teenagers and young people making a horrendous mistake, rather than convicted sex offenders upon their release from the female prison estate) but only once.

But I might have dreamed it all.

Christ they have brass balls.

It reminds me a bit of something C.S Lewis wrote in the Screwtape Letters, where he says that people are so used to believing a dozen different incompatible philosophies, it really doesn't bother them if something doesn't seen to make a lot of sense.

And in this case, it doesn't bother them to just change their belief system as it becomes convenient for their narrative to change. Brains like goldfish not remembering what they said and thought six months ago.

They know that detransitioners pose an existential threat to trans rights, so if they include them under the transgender umbrella they are keeping their enemies closer.

I think they've finally realised that they can't pretend they don't exist.

HirplesWithHaggis · 07/04/2022 20:16

@vivariumvivariumsvivaria

Anyway, you can't detransition in law, can you?

Isn't that one of the problems Keira has? She's got a GRC and in order to change gender on a GRC you have to have dysphoria - which Keira doesn't have.

So, I may be wrong in this, but, Keira's still a male in law? Because the law is an ass.

Not sure about Keira, but I think that's the position in the amendments proposed for Scotland. Once you've declared yourself the opposite sex, it would be a criminal offence akin to fraud to detransition.

But I could well be wrong. Confused

tabbycatstripy · 07/04/2022 20:04

How dare they try to commoditise people in this way. Just for jobs and status and liberal credentials. It’s disgusting.

IcakethereforeIam · 07/04/2022 19:27

Perhaps the silver lining is that if even Badlypaintedpaperwall can see the writing is on the, erm, wall things really are going our way? Is the phrase 'reverse ferret'? This is totally about income streams.

Stealhsquirrelnutkin · 07/04/2022 19:20

Perhaps it has dawned on them that trying to bully the government into submission by refusing to attend the expensive conference that was being arranged on their behalf has not done them any favours among the group of people who will be deciding how much funding to offer them next time around?

After all, they get an awful lot of money from the tax payer each year. So it was really, really stupid of them to alienate the people who decide where that money goes. Perhaps Sex Matters and the Lesbian Gay and Bisexual Alliance will be trousering the cash that has gone to Mermaids, Stonewall and the other trans lobby groups, now that they have overplayed their hand? I most fervently hope that this is the case.

FOJN · 07/04/2022 19:09

Stonewalls next income stream?

I thought exactly that a few days ago. It's hard not to be cynical in the current climate.

Slothtoes · 07/04/2022 18:59

Please let them not add the ‘D’ to the string of letters.

I would have thought ‘gender affirming care’ is the very last thing that detransitioners want- isn’t their status as detransitioned people a rejection of gender identity theory? A reclamation of their biological sex that was there all along? A reclamation of gender nonconformity being ordinary, not something to pathologise and experimentally medicalise?

This a group of people that Stonewall pretended don’t exist. This a ‘part of the journey’ that people who socially or medically detransitioned, were ostracised for talking about. Or told that they were never really trans.

This is a ‘part of the journey’ that detransitioned people, their doctors, psychologists, researchers, parents, and anyone else who thought to ask questions about it, would be demonised as ‘transphobic’ for showing concern about. Because it made the political lobby look bad. They’ve been ignored deliberately for years because they show the self-serving dogma for what it is. They show that biological reality matters which is intolerable and unforgivable to this political lobby.

Stonewall should give a lot of their income to specialist organisations that support detransitioned people as a group with defined, unique needs. Stonewall should do this as part of explicitly recognising the severe and different physical and emotional burdens faced by detransitioned people of each sex.

The idea of Stonewall being an authority to comment on the needs of detransitioned people is insulting. The prospect that one day Stonewall might get money to provide services for them, is extremely concerning.

What possible expertise does Stonewall have on any of this? Zero.
‘Gender affirming care’ would require detransitioned people in numbers to feel they are a subset of transpeople.
Maybe some might? Or, might many of them quite reasonably feel very let down by a politics that rejected and ignored their experiences? I don’t know.

Hoardasurass · 07/04/2022 18:58

Yeh sure detransitioners should trust that the people who sold them this bs will help "fix" everything for them 🙄

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 07/04/2022 18:42

This started when Marci Bowers said maybe endocrinologists had zig zagged too far and overestimated what surgeons could do.

After Marci had ruined Jazz Jennings, on tv.

Marci's no fool. Can position marci-self to be an expert in the compensation cases, right?

It's a ponzi scheme built on misery, infertility and mental ill health.

The fuckers.

I have no words for this craven bunch of [redacted].

OvaHere · 07/04/2022 17:37

Cynically I would say they are making a play for their loyalty and affection. Like children who are caught up in a bitter divorce.

Dentransitioners are better continuing to forge ahead with their own orgs and networks as they have been doing.

I don't think feminists or the TQ+ necessarily know what is best for them. Obviously I want to be supportive of all female detrans people but that's different than speaking for them.

tabbycatstripy · 07/04/2022 17:32

By what appears to be her new logic, detransitioners would be transitioners, just moving from one sex to the other (or to some state in between) and natural Stonewall clientele. Once you’re in their clutches you can’t leave.

NecessaryScene · 07/04/2022 17:30

I've seen this sort of thing before from other groups - it's all part of someone's "gender journey", sort of thing.

That Stonewall has switched to it now maybe indicates some acceptance that they it's no longer effective trying to cling to the "gender is utterly solid and innate" that they wanted strategically to justify the "conversion therapy" ban.

People are seeing through that, so they give up on it, and move in on the "gender journey" stuff, to try to handle the detransition front of the battle.

IcakethereforeIam · 07/04/2022 17:29

This is actually making me feel nauseous
