X post.

Sortilege · 08/04/2022 19:34

Well exactly.

It’s a really shit and frankly inexplicable pun on this;

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Heartbreaking_Work_of_Staggering_Genius

I think Grace is just so profoundly committed to womanhood Grace has to mention Grace’s penis at every opportunity. You know. Like is girls all do.

Deliriumoftheendless · 08/04/2022 19:33

It’s a shit attempt at a riff on Dave Eggers A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. (A good book).

Motorina · 08/04/2022 19:30

Can anyone explain the 'staggering penis' thing to me, please? As a title it reads a bit like one of those 'I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue' rounds where the contestants have to add "in my pants" to the end of popular film titles. Except those are usually funny. This just leaves me perplexed.

Deliriumoftheendless · 08/04/2022 18:45

I’m predicting the next book title will be a riff on Jonathan Franzen and it’ll be called The Erections.

CaveMum · 08/04/2022 18:34

I liked that part too @nauticant Grin

Julie does write amusingly:

One of the reasons I will not use female pronouns for Lavery is because of the sheer amount of willy in the book. As one feminist friend remarked when I was explaining the use of the term “her erect penis” in a liberal British newspaper when reporting on the trans-identified sex offender Karen White who had sexually assaulted female prisoners: “The only time the use of the phrase ‘her penis’ is acceptable is if a woman castrates her rapist and holds it up as a kind of trophy.”

Sorry, those grins were for Mole's work that Awkwardy posted.

was trying to imagine a casual radio listener switching through the channels in their car. If they had tuned in mid way through and heard that voice I'm sure they wouldn't think the voice was anything other than male.

I’m at a work CPD away days thing and someone remarked just that. My colleague had tuned in at the middle of the interview while driving here yesterday. My colleague remarked what a load of tosh was being spouted by an obviously privileged man.

CaveMum · 08/04/2022 14:18

Just came in to share that tweet and see @Awkwardy has beaten me to it! Grin Grin Grin

@Furries

Finally had some time to sit down and listen to this.

My head hurts a bit from trying to follow their stream of consciousness and my eyes hurt a lot from rolling them.

As an aside, they don’t half sniff a lot during that interview.

Brings to mind that Freud quote about how well his lecture had gone

I only listened to the two-minute clip from the Twitter thread linked but hell's teeth, too many words.

Perfect voice for radio, though Grin

You can try opening a book with a penis but the pages get stuck together.

WeDontTalkAboutYouKnow · 08/04/2022 12:32

@UniversalAunt

‘ Opening a book with your penis isn’t that impressive. Now, opening a jar of pickles with your penis, that gets my respect.’

Passing the teapot with your penis would be an interesting variety act.

Passing a paper towel whilst giving compliments on shades of lipstick, ala talking Tommy Lee penis would be the pinnacle of impressive for me.

GL says they’re a scholar of 19th century literature but it appears they haven’t read much of it. John Stuart Mill - a man so much more important than, say Mary Wollstonecraft or those other harpies - talks about women as a sex class ALL THE TIME. Gosh, he even proposed a Private Member’s Bill To give those pesky women the vote.

But of course unless Mill or others used the specific term
“Sex based rights” then clearly NO-ONE talked about womens rights. Just no-one

I think there are are a couple of universities which should demand their degrees back.

AlisonDonut · 08/04/2022 12:00

@Manicsfan

Whilst not the most important point by any means, I'm raging by GL's appropriation of title of Dave Eggers book for such a crass, cringey title. A Staggering Work of Heartbreaking Genius is based on Dave taking care of his young brother when his Mum and Dad both die, of tragic illnesses. It's funny, original, heartbreaking, honest and human. And Dave has done loads for child literacy since. What a total fucking scunner to have this gammon stealing your book title.
Absolutely agree.

I am aghast though that Grace picked a very male pun on this title. How did his lady brain think of such a gross pun?

EdithStourton · 08/04/2022 09:52

Grace does come across as graceless.

And no one with a penis is a she. I might use that pronoun if dealing with them in person if they weren't making outrageous demands, but anyone who goes on about their penis and then tells me I'm womanning wrong... Ah, feck off, luv.

Yeah, come back and talk when you can do something useful with it, please.
