Sky News.

He thinks it's unfair for biological men to compete in women's sports.

He says it's important to preserve women's spaces.

Says he has a lot to learn about the issue but we have to be sensible.

Fuck off isn't a debate

We've been having the debate for the last 15 pages. If your response to all of that is, "if you vote Tory you're a douch [sic]" I don't think you're exactly demonstrating that you'd be amenable to more sensible arguments.

Floisme · 07/04/2022 11:31

I think that once you've called someone who might vote differently from you a douch you've kind of lost the intellectual high ground, no?

GoodJanetBadJanet · 07/04/2022 11:27

Fuck off isn't a debate

Picking apart someone's spelling and saying fuck off, yep with you on this one

maddy68 · 07/04/2022 11:14

@bellinisurge

Douch? Leaving aside the spelling (because we all fuck up our spelling and look like dicks), selfID and de facto self ID constitutes an existential crisis for women. Hardly "one little issue ". A woman was raped on a single sex ward and disbelieved for a YEAR because the hospital didn't record that the rapist (a fellow patient on the ward) was a man. In fact, they didn't believe her because they said that we don't have any men on our ward so you couldn't have been raped. That creates an existential crisis for women. So fuck off.

That seems to be basically saying though that if it stops people from transitioning, that's OK - as being trans is just cosmetic, so bring it on for them, but not for us Sad
When it's obviously much more complicated than "just being cosmetic. ''
As I said, you can't start to pick and choose who you want bodily autonomy for as that's a dodgy road to go down.

ResisterRex · 07/04/2022 10:34

@Ereshkigalangcleg

With the misspelling and all.
Perhaps carved in stone? No, wait...

@GoodJanetBadJanet

Also bigger picture, such as abortion and birth control are more medical issues, whereas getting a tattoo is different as that's cosmetic.
A double mastectomy when no cancer is cosmetic.

But the point still stands that it is currently illegal for a teen to permanently modify their body with a tattoo, yet legal for a teen to obtain access to contraception etc.

The idea that it will become illegal for a teen to access contraception if they are not allowed to access puberty blockers is a non sequitur. It is a TRA talking point.

Terfydactyl · 07/04/2022 10:29

@GoodJanetBadJanet

Are you on about women now or girls? Both, really. You were talking about it affecting 16 year olds and younger. So girls. Who should be able to make decisions for themselves too when it comes to making decisions about abortion and birth control. If we start attacking gillick competence (bodily autonomy) for some, surely it stands to reason that it might eventually affect others too? Or is it a case of its alright if you're trans, but OK stop there, right, that's it, no more - don't come for us too? As I don't think it'll work like that.
No you mentioned gillick. Gillick only affects girls(and boys). Adult human females can make choices and go places that teen girls cannot.

Why do you think gillick is being or about to be dismantled?

Theres no sign of that happening at all. Plus if it did then we as 51% of the population could raise a fair fight about it. We do after all know how to now after the last many years.

So you think something affecting a tiny minority but then found to affect others whether intended or not should be stopped?

ResisterRex · 07/04/2022 10:25

@maddy68

If you vote Tory you are a douch. For every other humane reason And to vote for ANY party on one policy is madness
Voting to keep women safe, to protect children, are not humane things to think about and take into account when casting a vote?

Can you provide evidence for strong public appetite for the banning of birth control for under 16s after it's been legal without issue for such a long time? Do you seriously think such legislation would make it through both chambers? Which politicians are currently campaigning for it?

In a grown-up world where we could discuss trans issues calmly and factually, a discussion of Gillick competence and the comparison of birth control and irreversible experimental medication for vulnerable teenagers would be quite enlightening.

needmoresleep there is a piece in the mail today from one of the athletes who competed against Lia Thomas, saying how unfair it is for biological males to be competing against females.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 07/04/2022 09:57

Yes, because being allowed to get a tattoo at 16 is just as serious as being allowed an abortion or birth control Hmm

SelfPortraitWithPterodactyl · 07/04/2022 09:52

I believe "douche" has an "e".

Floisme · 07/04/2022 09:51

You'd have thought that, after December 2019, we'd have all learned that haranguing and insulting the very people whose votes we need, is not a great tactic.

SwissBall · 07/04/2022 09:49

I’ve just been reading about Crispin Blunt having a massive tantrum.

Can someone direct me to this please? Grin

EdgeOfACoin · 07/04/2022 09:47

If you vote Tory you are a douch.

Oh, okay, I'm persuaded. Great point, well made.

EdgeOfACoin · 07/04/2022 09:47

As far as I'm aware it is illegal for an under-16 to get a tattoo. A 16-year-old needs parental permission. (At least, that used to be the case - I assume it still is.)

Nobody seems to be stressing about a 15-year-old's inability to get a tattoo and their bodily autonomy.

Yes, Catherina, this may all be true. The fact remains that we are being asked to choose between someone who says something that we think is on the side of truth, justice and equality - knowing him to be an unscrupulous dick - and someone who, although he is probably less of a wanker, is spouting a rigid, misogynistic, hateful ideology in spite of knowing that it hurts women. You advise us to choose the latter. I remain unconvinced.
This nails it
