Boris Speaks!

Sky News.

He thinks it's unfair for biological men to compete in women's sports.

He says it's important to preserve women's spaces.

Says he has a lot to learn about the issue but we have to be sensible.

I'm astonished that we're all shaken to the core that any politician has actually said what Boris Johnson said, in such straightforward terms. What a world we find ourselves in when we are so used to obfuscation that straight talking comes as a shock.

This is the first time I can recall having agreed with Boris Johnson about anything and I find the Conservative party's stance on the majority of issues facing our country to be totally at odds with what I believe would be the right way forward.

But I'm still pleased he's taken this step. Others will surely have to follow, making more definitive statements and recognising that the debate needs to be had - without heat to the fullest extent possible, but definitely with light.

Arising from this I have to hope that another party, one with values more closely aligned to my own, will similarly recognise the importance of speaking up for womens' rights. Until that happens, I'm still politically homeless.

But at least the debate is beginning to happen.

The TRAs are trying to argue that reflecting on the extent of Gillick competence means no under age pregnant girl can access abortion. Desperate stuff really

Chipchocmint · 07/04/2022 12:26

Should a 15 year old be forced to have a baby then?

Maybe?

It's a debate worth having IMO.

NotBadConsidering · 07/04/2022 12:25

@GoodJanetBadJanet

But you’re going on about Gillick competence, which is a legal precedent for children and their ability to consent Should a 15 year old be forced to have a baby then? I'm '' going on '' about gillick competence because stuff like that is relevant.
No, a 15 year old should not be forced to have a baby.

In what way is that remotely relevant to the maintenance of single sex spaces?

bellinisurge · 07/04/2022 12:25

So that is why this IS the issue. We are not allowed to protect ourselves from predators. No I am not saying all trans people are predators. Just as not all men are predators. Safeguarding is about thinking of the worst case scenario NOT hoping for the best

GoodJanetBadJanet · 07/04/2022 12:22

Do you want that to happen to you? Your mum? Your sister? Your daughter?
What on earth do you think I'm going to say to this?!
Of course I don't, what a stupid fucking question.

ResisterRex · 07/04/2022 12:22

Is it really though? As I see a possible threat to my bodily autonomy a much bigger danger.

It is a grave threat. Once we go down this road, there's either no coming back or the coming back could take decades and decades. Just look what's happened elsewhere in terms of physical safety and free speech:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10093737/Father-daughter-raped-gender-fluid-bathroom-sues-Loudoun-County-Title-IX.html

thepostmillennial.com/canadian-transphobia-gender-critical-feminism

In fact, once free speech has gone, how would anyone even be allowed to talk, to undo the damage? Or maybe that's the idea.

NotBadConsidering · 07/04/2022 12:22

@GoodJanetBadJanet

the biggest danger to women and girls in my lifetime then I'll vote for it thank you very much Is it really though? As I see a possible threat to my bodily autonomy a much bigger danger. Even '' GC'' posters are saying unlikely to happen, but unlikely isn't good enough.
But you’re going on about Gillick competence, which is a legal precedent for children and their ability to consent. Are you a child? And how does the maintenance of single sex spaces impact consent for mature minors? You’re talking about something completely unrelated that makes no sense.
Needmoresleep · 07/04/2022 12:22

Janet, doyou have daughters? Do you have an elderly mother?

If you do, I can't understand why you come onto these threads to scold other women.

I cant even think how upset my late mother would have been if she had woken up in a hospital bed next to a man. She lived with dementia for over a decade and would have been utterly confused to be told this was a woman so she should be kind and accepting.

I am not at all happy with prescribing hormone blockers to kids in the name of 'bodily autonomy'. I worry that Labour would bring in a more liberal approach to the medicalisation of children, along the lines of what happens in the US, where double mastectomies for girls with gender dysphoria happens at much younger ages than in the UK.

This 'bodily autonomy' argument sounds like it has safeguarding issues here as well, in terms of the age of consent.

It's absolutely the most important issue right now, if we don't fight this then future generations of women and girls will be to afraid to leave the house which will severely limit their earning potential and make them reliant on men again, which is the aim of the patriarchy and the reason they are pushing this.

A woman was raped in hospital because of gender woo woo. It actually happened. And then she was disbelieved for a year because of gender woo woo.
Do you want that to happen to you? Your mum? Your sister? Your daughter?

BigWoollyJumpers · 07/04/2022 12:08

Try setting aside the party politics. It matters that our PM has publically made a statement supporting the rights of women, whilst also acknowledging trans issues, and that there is much work to do to ensure fairness and safety for all.

The most important thing is that people in power (and at the moment mostly Conservatives) are starting to speak up for womens rights in regards to the rise of trans rights debate. The more that do, the more others will be inclined to follow a lead. Most of the electorate are reasonable people. They are content for trans people to exist, to live their lives, to contribute to society. However, they do see the need for women to continue to have their hard fought rights preserved at the same time, in terms of space, dignity, fairness or safety.

Chipchocmint · 07/04/2022 12:08

I would happily vote Tory and suffer whatever is required under any other policy for as long as it takes

Same, my pension pot is quite substantial and will see me through the worst of it.

@GoodJanetBadJanet

Because this is an existential threat to women Posters thinking Boris and the Daily Mail care about women and girls and a vote for Boris is '' a vote for women everywhere'' is. They only care when they think there' s something in it for them.
Like umpteen other posters on this thread alone.

WE KNOW

Ok we know they dont care, we know boris is a moron, we know.
Doesn't matter, instead of giving us a hard time for voting how we choose (which is still legal) go tell labour, lib dems, greens, and most annoyingly womens equally party.
Go right ahead, let them know a lot of women are so pissed off with their current policies on self id and the twaw mantra that they will vote boris in.
If those parties had any brains about them, they would do something to win our votes.

NotBadConsidering · 07/04/2022 12:04

I would happily vote Tory and suffer whatever is required under any other policy for as long as it takes, if it means a Labour Party who is determined to bring in self-ID is kept out.

I would do this because suffering under Tories for a decade or two is infinitely better than being responsible for my daughters, and their daughters, and their daughters, in the next century and beyond having no space outside of their own home that can be guaranteed to be free of males.

Because once it’s brought in, there will be no going back. Women will never have single sex anything, ever. That is the gravity of what a vote for Labour means; the sacrifice of single sex spaces for our lifetime and that of future generations.

I do not give a single fuck if that makes me a douch [sic], a Tory apologist, a bigot, a transphobe, or what ever other made up idea about me might get thrown around. I know my own politics, I know my own leanings, I know my own prejudice, and it’s not my problem if parties are actively pushing my vote away, it’s theirs.

bellinisurge · 07/04/2022 12:03

This myth that we are all right wing and we all love and trust Johnson. Nah.
I'd rather Rosie Duffield's voice but Labour won't support her.

Well, of course politicians care when they think there's something in it for them. Winning elections, for instance. Votes.

If other parties cared about the opinions and votes of, in this case, women, instead of a spurious ideological purity, a lot of us wouldn't be considering voting Tory.

Chipchocmint · 07/04/2022 12:02

@maddy68

If you vote Tory you are a douch. For every other humane reason And to vote for ANY party on one policy is madness
When that one policy is fighting against the biggest danger to women and girls in my lifetime then I'll vote for it thank you very much.
GoodJanetBadJanet · 07/04/2022 12:00

I'm not an idiot
I never said you were.
I wasn't talking about you personally, just posters in general and what's been said in this thread

bellinisurge · 07/04/2022 11:58

Of course I know he's a shifty bastard and not a campaigner for women. I'm not an idiot. But this is "do a deal with the devil" time because Labour haven't stepped up. If they do, I will vote Labour. If they don't I'll spoil my ballot.

Bored of being kind. Someone calls me a douch(e), I'm in no mood to be Michelle Obama today and go high when they go low. I explained why I said fuck off. Because this is an existential threat to women.
