I want JKR to buy shares in twitter and work together with Elon Musk to transform it into a platform with free speech and proper, fair moderation.

A woman can dream, can't I?

DuckDuckNo · 04/04/2022 21:22

LOL, I was in Harajuku once and there was this Western trans woman who was dressed in loli fashion - they were about 6'2 tall, 5 o'clock shadow, broad shoulders and then the short frilly skirt, white little girl pantyhose etc. They were talking on the phone going on about how everyone was so accepting and meanwhile the Japanese people around me muttered "...hentai..." ("...pervert...") while trying to look away.

Anime culture is not that mainstream even in Japan. And this stuff definitely isn't.

I forgot the real reason why I began reading those comments: I wanted to see what they said about the death threats against JK Rowlings.

The common responses were that a) JK Rowlings never responded to them when they made rational counterarguments but would then single out some unimportant person's death threat, and b) all TERFs cause trans people to die by directing violent people in their direction, and that is much, much worse than a few online threats.

The major assertion that was made in those threads was about Dr. David Bell. Presumably he never actually worked directly with GID patients at Tavistock. (More clarity on the issue www.theguardian.com/society/2021/may/02/tavistock-trust-whistleblower-david-bell-transgender-children-gids).

I looked for tweets which would have disapproved of the death threat tweet. If there were any from that side on the issue they were so few that I can't recall them.

This is somewhat similar to how the slogan "It's all right to punch a Nazi' was used, i.e., that it is acceptable to use violence against a person suspected of even greater violence.

The snag, of course is that 'suspected' here is entirely subjective, not based on any evidence that others could verify or falsify, and not addressed within the legal system.

Wonder if that group (whether truly game developers or just amateur ones) might live mostly online where one's identity can be entirely created? That would explain some of their beliefs. In their imaginary world cartoon women (girl children, really) are not oppressed. Or if they are it is because they derive erotic enjoyment from it.

Yes I think a lot of them interact with people mostly online and aren't "out" as trans in any significant way.

Anime is very popular amongst the TRAs of Twitter - the notorious STFU TERF meme (featuring a zombie transgirl who died rather than go through male puberty hmm ) is just one example of where they find representation. Japanese pop culture generally seems to appeal

Last night was the first time I looked at a largish number of the accounts which attacked JK Rowling or the so-called TERFs with commands to shut up or pictures showing SILENCE or which used just misogynistic slurs.

I found a predominance of Anime girls as the profile pictures of all sorts of 'anti-transphobes', including many clearly adult (and male) individuals. The other startling aspect of those profiles was the very large number of people who stated that they were game developers.

@DrDetriment

James Dreyfus is my new hero. I had no idea how amazing he was.
He's awesome. Very witty too.

In other words, if Rowling perceived this a death threat wouldn't the best thing to do just make a police report instead of making a big rabble about it on Social Media?

MargaritaPie · 04/04/2022 15:10

Won't the person posting this, er, music benefit from all the advertising she is getting from both the Daily Mail and JK Rowling's Twitter?

NitroNine · 04/04/2022 14:50

You’re very welcome CriticalCondition - I know enough to distinguish it from a wakizashi (one of the privileges samurai had was that they were allowed to carry two swords: the katana is the longer of the two). I wasn’t, however, completely confident it was, as explained by VelvetChairGirl - who clearly does know heaps about it! - designed to be decorative: it looked too flimsy (for want of a better word) but I didn’t want to make a claim outside my limited knowledge.

Japanese pop culture generally seems to appeal - it’s evident in fashion choices, but also in discussion of things like futanari. (MNHQ, if someone reports this, clearly not all trans people. And I am certainly not claiming this specific individual is interested in futa, it is a general point relating to TRAs & Japanese pop culture, for which there is ample evidence.)

RoyalCorgi · 04/04/2022 13:38

It's against the law to send death threats. Though I don't expect the police would act on it if JKR reported this person. After all, they've got their hands full dealing with people like Marion Millar and Ceri Black.

Are there any lawyers here who could tell me if Twitter has any liability when it comes to death threats? I know with things like libel, there's a bit of a debate about whether Twitter and Facebook are more like publishers (liable) or phone companies (not liable). Presumably the same would apply to death threats?

*I once dated a guy who had a [pretend] Samurai sword on his wall.

I started talking about the way they used to be made, with the thousands of folds to keep it sharp for a lifetime and the history of them [I studied Japanese as well for a year, and was obsessed with the history in my early 20s].

Completely blank. No idea or interest about anything to do with swords. Just a sword on the wall. Potential red flag right there.*

sharp for a lifetime? it was pig iron it had to be folded thousands of times to make it usable and clay tempered to draw out the martensite on one side of the blade only otherwise they would be useless, it certainly wasn't sharp for a lifetime they had to be cleaned and oiled endlessly as they rusted as soon as you looked at them.

despite all the japanese romaticising them they were inferior steel to western steel, most of their lore comes from fighting the mongols whos swords were absolute junk too, even worse.

The vikings had amazing steel as did india.

Cool thanks for the info.

@AlisonDonut

Thats a sexist comment, I own 11 swords and various other bits and pieces and I am not a man.

How are you defining 'man'?

Penis owning, XYer
IsadoraQuagmire · 04/04/2022 11:07

You can't rely on Twitter to do anything about the most horrendous threats and libellous comments. You can always rely on them to stand up for TRAs/MRAs, and ban anyone who says that men can't magically become women however.

AlisonDonut · 04/04/2022 10:59

@nauticant

A sexist comment would have been no women are interested in swords. That wasn't said and you're twisting meaning.

@CriticalCondition

Bloody hell, that photo! What kind of sword is that?
A shit one, looks like a sub £50 katana to me AKA a wall hanger not practical.

AKA junk, you need to spend at least £300 for a decent one thats actually usable so I wouldnt pay any attention to the fool.

there used to be a great video on youtube of some idiot swinging a wall hanger around, it shattered on impact into 3 pieces and nearly hit him in the face, you cant make a usable blade out of stainless steel thats above about 10 inches long, the brittleness of the material becomes a liability, hence only good for hanging on a wall.

Somanysocks · 04/04/2022 10:32

The topsy turvy world of twitter seemingly run by 14-year-old boys who can't get a girlfriend.

PaterPower · 04/04/2022 10:24

I imagine he prances around his bedroom waving the thing around and pretending he actually knows how to use it…

…whilst trying his best to believe that he wouldn’t immediately run in the opposite direction if he ever got into a sword / any type of fight.

DameHelena · 04/04/2022 10:20

I reported it and had a message this morning to say their 'investigation found that this account violated the Twitter Rules… Violating our rules against abuse and harassment.'
The account is still there, but no new tweets since 2 April. I'm not sure what that means –is the person banned from posting new tweets but the account gets to stay?

ScreamingMeMe · 04/04/2022 10:11

Phallic symbolism?

It’s a katana. Of course, samurai were all men & they were an elite - but I suspect this person’s interest is rooted in the usage of the katana in Japanese pop culture, specifically anime.

Thank you. I love the breadth of knowledge on here. It joins the dots and helps the patterns appear.
