The UN has rejected Stonewall’s ‘dossier’ of evidence against the EHRC. It remains a grade A rated human rights organisation.

That is surprisingly quick - I would have thought something like that would take months to consider. The Stonewall / GLP "dossier" must have been truly laughable to be dismissed out of hand like that.

And presumably all human rights orgs are subjected to periodic review Hmm...

DameHelena · 01/04/2022 15:07

Where is the actual news on this? I can't find it by googling.

WeeBisom · 01/04/2022 14:59

Oh, haha, Jo hadn't heard about the UN's conclusion first, and so the EHRC has 'jumped the gun' in announcing it. Sure.

Also, he is trying to get the new conversation therapy law declared incompatible with the human rights act. This seems like a bonkers proposition. You can't say a law is incompatible with the HRA just because it isn't complete, or misses out a group you would like to be included. The question is...is the law as it currently stands incompatible with the HRA? Is he really going to suggest that a law which bans conversion therapy for gay people is inconsistent with the human rights act? How could that possibly be? The decision to exclude trans people is entirely a government decision and can't be reviewed by a court (one would have thought) but it's not going to stop him from trying.

PronounssheRa · 01/04/2022 14:32

He is so terribly terribly important don't you know.

I'm astonished people still give GLP money

VestofAbsurdity · 01/04/2022 14:22

He's ever so upset he wasn't the first to know, isn't he? I mean he is the most importantest person ever in the whole wide world how dare they tell someone else first.

bellinisurge · 01/04/2022 14:15

The fox killers " statement " is code for "I'm a fuckwit but if keep making noise no one will notice "

Artichokeleaves · 01/04/2022 14:13

Yes but THEIR political agenda is ok! Impartiality and political capture is fine so long as the RIGHT politics is involved.

Sauce for the goose is never sauce for the gander.

VestofAbsurdity · 01/04/2022 14:11

and Stonewall and Jolene aren't trying to force the EHRC to advance their political agenda.

VestofAbsurdity · 01/04/2022 14:07

Here cometh the spin.

DameHelena · 01/04/2022 14:06

Silence, fair maids. A man hath spake:

https://twitter.com/JolyonMaugham/status/1509875966117621768

I see the EHRC has issued a statement that the UN had "rejected a complaint by Stonewall and other groups who had questioned the EHRC’s independence and effectiveness and sought a special review of the EHRC’s 'A Status'."

This is the first we've heard of it.

We also have to say, the statement may not be the only way in which the EHRC has jumped the gun.

Even if the EHRC has got the inside track, and its failings haven't precipitated a special review, we expect it will be considered shortly for periodic review.

We are also aware of another leading group - speaking for another 'protected characteristic' - that is preparing a submission to GANHRI about the EHRC's increasing tendency to advance the Government's political agenda rather than protecting disadvantaged communities from it.

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 01/04/2022 13:45

thank goodness

i mean the answer to 'will the UN pander to a massive fucking tantrum?' should have been 'hell no', but nothing is a given these days, is it?

MrsOvertonsWindow · 01/04/2022 13:42

Wow - the bricks are slowly being dismantled from the misogyny wall this week.
And a legal challenge from the fox killer would be great to ensure that the appalling treatment of children confused about which sex they are gets prime time coverage!

Whatsnewpussyhat · 01/04/2022 13:30

It's bizarre how happy a thread title could make me.

Fantastic news.

VestofAbsurdity · 01/04/2022 13:04

Good news and yes I'm laughing at those who thought they could do this.

BenCooperisaGod · 01/04/2022 13:00

Well this is turning into a week for good news. Hurrah!

bellinisurge · 01/04/2022 12:40

Good. No debate is OVER

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 01/04/2022 12:40

Second piece of excellent news I've heard this week. The first one came from the UCI.

tabbycatstripy · 01/04/2022 12:35

I think the LGBA case goes ahead in May.

Abitofalark · 01/04/2022 12:34

Oh, another one chalked up against the fox killer. Good, although I am not generally disposed to put much faith in the UN or its committees.
If they had reviewed the EHRC during the previous reign or if they had found against the current EHRC, they would have had to find fault with the blatant capture of EHRC by Stonewall factions. Call me cynical.

Janie143 · 01/04/2022 12:29

Such a dignified statement from EHRC. As you would expect

Artichokeleaves · 01/04/2022 12:28

@tabbycatstripy

I think the foxy one is busy threatening to sue the government to force it to include trans people in the conversion-therapy-that-has-nothing-at-all-to-do-with-therapy ban. 🦊
Ooh that'd be fun!

Hopefully Ben will be available to explain, in blunt and easy detail for the transcripts and news articles, all the reasons why this is 'problematic'.

I'll stock up on popcorn.

DoubleTweenQueen · 01/04/2022 12:27

Yes, the incidence of costs awarded against him will be stacking up.

Is the challenge to the charity status of LGB Alliance on for later this year? May have to quietly abandon that one.

Oh, let him crack on. He'll get nowhere and we can all have a chuckle at him again.
AlisonDonut · 01/04/2022 12:20

Fuck me. I feel like we are finally squeezing back through the looking glass. Go Alice go.
