What should a politician say re: TWAW

Lots of clips of politicians stumbling over the simple question of What is a woman or Is a transwoman a woman. It's like they're not prepared.
What do you think they should say? Even if they think it, they can't just say 'Adult Human Female' or 'No' to those questions because they'd probably get an aggressive follow up question.

How can they say the above without offending the very vocal transactivists? Is it possible? I'm not sure it is.

My partner is involved in our constituency Labour Party. They have a couple of very aggressive men from Young Labour who throw their weight around and threaten our MP if she says anything that could be construed as GC. They're really thuggish, entitled men. A number of women who left the party in protest are now returning and bringing friends and mobilising, so that these young bullies are outnumbered by older women at meetings. They are having some success. You need to get a CLP women's section up and running and then take the woke-bros on.

I'm just so furious that so many women are having to spend so much precious time and money to just have their voices heard.

bellinisurge · 29/03/2022 20:17

Do they seriously think the Tory gloves won't come off. It's all they've got left. Feckin idiots

OvaHere · 29/03/2022 19:25

I asked him if the perception among Labour members was that women were angry about this, and he said “no”.

I would imagine this is something to do with Twitter blocklists and only reading The Guardian where all dissenting comments are removed at the speed of light and anyone making them banned.

Whatiswrongwithmyknee · 29/03/2022 19:15

They should say that they are men - TWAW. But that does not mean that they don't deserve legal protections just that collapsing the categories of TW and women does no favours to anyone.

WeeBisom · 29/03/2022 18:55

TabithaHazel: keep in mind this is may not be representative of Labour as a whole, but the perception is this is seen as an incredibly popular issue with young people, akin to the next big civil rights movement, so the concern is the youth vote would entirely collapse if Labour didn't believe that TWAW. It was just interesting to me that it's seen as so universally popular among young people, whereas women are entirely uncaring or ignorant about the issue.

tabbycatstripy · 29/03/2022 18:48

‘But Labour also realise the law is in place to protect women’s rights so have to accommodate that too.’

How do they propose to do that?

TabithaHazel · 29/03/2022 18:48

@WeeBisom

My partner is involved in Labour Party politics (poor thing) and he knows my thoughts on this issue. I asked him why Labour has adopted this strange strategy. The perception from within his local Labour group is that most members of the public are ignorant about or don’t care about this issue, whereas a large continent of young people and trans activists care about this issue very much. Labour don’t want to alienate the young people / trans activists, so have to be very careful in what they say. But Labour also realise the law is in place to protect women’s rights so have to accommodate that too. I asked him if the perception among Labour members was that women were angry about this, and he said “no”. The perception is that most women support trans rights or don’t care, and Labour isn’t seriously worried about losing female voters on this issue.

If that’s the case I wonder why Labour politicians appear to be treading so delicately round this topic. Why not say “yes trans women are women and of course women can have penises?” But I also think if this report is true (and it only pertains to his local branch and Labour Facebook group) then Labour have seriously underestimated how pissed off women have become.

Why do you think they are courting this minority vote though? Young people I know within my friends and family circle dabble with gender identity for a couple of years then seem to grow out of it - so this seems like such a weird hill for the LP to die on.
GrimDamnFanjo · 29/03/2022 18:44

There's the other issue too - There will be a lot of internal lobbying from twaw party members.
In political parties, you have to watch your back - offend too many party members and you'll be out on your ear.
So part of this fudging from many will be about their own survival.

I'm loving Talk Radio at the moment, asking every politician a simple question to which there is a simple answer. Then listening to all the squirming, wriggling, forked tongued responses coming out of their mouths. But should we be surprised? They are politicans after all - evasion goes with the territory.

bellinisurge · 29/03/2022 18:35

@WouldBeGood , not saying you should vote for them. However, if the issue gets raised because they are talking about it, the others may be forced to talk about it too.

WouldBeGood · 29/03/2022 18:35

Yes, I know what the election is for 😃 I’m using it to ask all candidates about this though

happydappy2 · 29/03/2022 18:32

I had a conservative counsellor on my doorstep recently and I asked him how do you define a woman? He knew! Adult human female. I then asked how Boris could sleep at night knowing there are males in womens prisons? He agreed that situation was awful-he had sisters and he wanted them to have single sex spaces. I told him women voters are refusing to vote Labour purely on this issue...there will be no peace until we stop giving males legal recognition as women. That is the only solution. The word woman would not include males.

jkrfan · 29/03/2022 18:29

Remember this is not for Holyrood(MSPs) and will not get Sturgeon out, it is just for the Regional Councils.

jkrfan · 29/03/2022 18:26

@WouldBeGood

I’m in Scotland so there is urgency in voting against this stuff.
As it's local elections where in Scotland you number the candidates in order of preference, I will vote for Conservative and LibDem Candidates...no Labour ones ever get in here anyway and one local LibDem does some good work.
WouldBeGood · 29/03/2022 18:25

Won’t be voting for them! Sleazy

bellinisurge · 29/03/2022 18:22

Alba seems like the only party in Scotland saying reasonable stuff on this. I'd do what I could to at least show the talking point is cutting through.

bellinisurge · 29/03/2022 18:16

I can't vote Tory. I just can't. But unless one of the other parties comes up with reality on this, I will spoil my paper. Again. If that leads to a Tory government, that's not on me. That's on Labour for letting me down.

jkrfan · 29/03/2022 17:59
@UsernameNotAvailableHmm Chilling to think that this is a way to get women to stop voting AngrySad

I am truly trapped by TWAW motto that so many parties are taking. I don't want to vote for the most corrupt government in UK modern history but TWAW is gaslighting that I will never vote for.
I think you have to vote Conservative at UK level for the sake of democracy ironically. Free speech is very important.
My former political party (Labour till Corbyn) thought I should be expelled for not believing TWAW.
I can now say that Labour/LibDem have lost my vote forever on this. I would never vote SNP, even if you paid me, anyway.

tabbycatstripy · 29/03/2022 17:58

Repealing legislation is quite rare.

jkrfan · 29/03/2022 17:47

I wonder if the Tories could ever repeal the GRA? It was Labour legislation after all. So long as it is on the statute book, women will never be safe from being re-defined against our will.

jkrfan · 29/03/2022 17:45
@UsernameNotAvailableHmm I am beginning to think this is all a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise women.

They can’t actively remove female suffrage, but they can make it impossible to vote.

Therefore I’m voting Tory, against instinct and nature, as at least they have not bought into this wholesale.
You are very wise to think like this. Allowing women to be effectively disenfranchised would be very hard to come back from, especially under First Past The Post.
It's all very HandMaid's Tale isn't it? I do sometimes wonder if Margaret Attwood would have been better not setting out such a society quite so clearly. I think it has given people ideas. I stopped watching the TV series in Season 2 as it just seemed like it was taking pleasure in women's suffering.

TabithaHazel · 29/03/2022 17:36

@bellinisurge

They should say TWATW. Trans people deserve care and support but not at the expense of women's identity, security and fairness.
Such a simple, succinct and clear response. Why are politicians not saying this? What is their agenda in trying to get people to deny reality?
