At last.

She was a bit hesitant but she said it.

She may need to know she has our support as they will go after her.

Thank you Siobhan McDonagh

Wiki says "McDonagh was first elected in the 1997 election for Labour, having been selected through an all-women shortlist" I should hope that she does know what a woman is!

IcakethereforeIam · 29/03/2022 11:47

Yes, the lovely emphatic words on JKR were heartwarming. I loved that.

tabbycatstripy · 29/03/2022 11:46

No-one seems to have noticed so far.

EggNcressida · 29/03/2022 11:45

Pleased to see she's said that about JKR 🌤

Rodedooda · 29/03/2022 11:45

Someone engaging their brain.

Farcical situation where politicians and candidates have to check what the party line is on what they're supposed to think a woman is.

IcakethereforeIam · 29/03/2022 11:45

Siobhan had a bit of a weak start (hatred?), rallied (afh), rallied some more (no women don't have penises) with a stumble (I don't think so) then staggered across the line (despite some men can become women).
What a rollercoaster! Don't know that she'd have made it if Julia hadn't been in the saddle. I wonder how she'd have shaped up if a twaw had been asking the questions?
Even so, best show of all labour politicians so far. I hope she doesn't suffer from any fallout.

MalagaNights · 29/03/2022 11:42

She was hesitant.
She's scared.

We need to encourage people to be brave and let them know they will be supported.

She did say JKR is a national hero.

Positives:

  • doesn't deny sex exists
  • doesn't say it's prurient to talk about it
  • recognises women sometimes need single-sex services
  • knows women don't have penises
  • recognises transition is a way of living your life, not magic male-female transformation

Negatives:

  • still seems convinced people just want a row
  • not sure whether a man can actually at some point become (literally) a woman
Beowulfa · 29/03/2022 11:38

She's my MP, and is local to the area (Mitcham & Morden- an unglamorous part of Sarf Lundun) rather than parachuted into a safe seat. I will write to her and press her on it. She's getting there!

EggNcressida · 29/03/2022 11:37

Good for her. I imagine reading that in 1990 you'd think it was a line from a month python sketch or something..

Ahoy7829 · 29/03/2022 11:36

Sorry I didn't watch video - risk of waking up sleeping toddler on me!

That's such a shame, but it is a step in the right direction. If she recognises women don't have penises, understanding relevant safeguarding and risk assessments isn't a big leap

tabbycatstripy · 29/03/2022 11:35

'She said women asserting the importance of sex are provoking an argument.'

She did, but she also said TRAs are provoking an argument by trying to ignore the importance of sex. She is at least trying. She obviously knows what a woman is and deserves praise for her bravery in not just spouting the line.

Ahoy7829 · 29/03/2022 11:34

Recognising women don't have penises is what it all comes down too.
Sex is real and it matters.

It so blindingly obvious it feels ridiculous saying it but labour seem to struggle to comprehend that.

ResisterRex · 29/03/2022 11:33

Not fantastic. She said women asserting the importance of sex are provoking an argument.

Overall it was a mix of bad and not fantastic - the rabbit hole was used but also she did seem to support single sex spaces for women but couldn't say at what point a man with a penis becomes a woman if he wants to.

Ahoy7829 · 29/03/2022 11:32

What is her constituency?
I encourage all in her constituency to actually vote for Labour, for her. I am a long term Labour voter and honestly thought I'd never vote or encourage someone to vote for them for quite some time!!

Amazing, if you're reading this Siobhan, thank you. Thank you for using your voice.

tabbycatstripy · 29/03/2022 11:27

Fantastic. She might think we (GC women) don't want people to live their lives as transitioning adults, or have 'sex changes' to make them more comfortable. That really isn't my position. Siobhan is much closer than she thinks she is to our side, and that looks very hard to do in the context of Labour politics, so well done to her.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/03/2022 11:20

Can you imagine having to post something like this just a few short years ago? We'd all have thought you'd gone mad, OP, whereas now we are all falling off our seats in astonishment that a Labour MP is willing to state this obvious fact. O tempora, O mores. Angry
