To wonder why an MP is lying about womens bathrooms?

TeaKlaxon · 28/03/2022 09:33

Lucy Allen has tweeted that the Barbican has mens bathrooms and gender neutral bathrooms, but no womens bathrooms.

Lots of twitter users told her that was wrong.

The Barbican itself told her it's wrong.

But the tweet remains. AIBU to think that if an MP gets something wrong, they should apologise and remove the lie? Or to think that this is deliberate misinformation to further the myth of women being 'erased'?

Tangential, and I'm definitely not right wing, but it hasn't eacaped my notice that the Tories have at least managed not just two female leaders, but two female Prime Ministers. Labour, despite claiming not to know what women are, sure know who not to choose as leader.

TangledNemo · 29/03/2022 11:30

It doesn’t matter what was posted really. If an MP, journalist or other public figure says ‘someone told me x’, but is then told ‘that’s not true, it’s Y’, they should at least post that rebuttal and/or delete the original. If possible, they should also establish the truth for themselves.

Helleofabore · 29/03/2022 11:29

Just to remind people what that tweet was, it was this one:

I received this message today: “I was at the Barbican yesterday where there were male toilets, disabled toilets, and gender neutral toilets. I asked where were the female toilets as I am not gender neutral I am a woman and they laughed in my face. Women are being erased.”

Helleofabore · 29/03/2022 11:29

Like actual problems. Like not being able to put food on the table. Like being far more likely than men to be in precarious employment. To lack the protection of a union. To be dependent on food banks.

Actual problems like being far more likely to be the ones that have to choose whether they buy a meal or put more credit in the electricity meter. Or to have to work out if they can afford to get the bus home from work or have to walk an hour in the dark.

Honest to god the sheer entitlement of the 'OMG can you believe that someone has to go up or down half a flight of stairs to get to a womens bathroom' when you you consider the actual inequality that exists.

yep... women.... they cannot focus on more than one issue at a time.

And they cannot possibly have those very issues you have mentioned and still want to have female single sex toilets.

And..... the continued ... look there is a squirrel ... over there with yet another mention that the toilets exist.

Which is all sparple.

Because the issue was that a woman asked for the directions for the female single sex toilets, was laughed at and was left with the impression that there was none at the Barbican.

Look..... squirrel....

And yet again for @TeaKlaxon. What people are trying to get across to you is that the gender neutral toilets have been created by removing single sex toilets. Not ALL single sex toilets, but SOME single sex toilets.

That means that there now isn't enough provision for women, because lets me fair, there isn't a building in the world that has ever been built with enough womens toilets. So women have to go in the Gender Neutral toilets, or probably miss some of the show. And on top of that, they're being directed to the gender neutral toilets and being obstructed when trying to find the loo's for their own sex.

I'm a man, so this doesn't really affect me. I don't particularly want to pee in a urinal in a room with women, but I'll live with it. But my 14 year old daughter, she would not use a gender neutral toilet, she'd rather hold it, so she's stuck with dealing with a longer queue than she should have to, or spending the evening feeling deeply uncomfortable.

But then you already knew all this, you're just being obtuse.

VestofAbsurdity · 29/03/2022 11:28

Stop saying it is a fact that she was laughed at.

Stop saying it is a fact she wasn't laughed at, unless you were there and witness to or part of the interaction, were you?

Others on this thread have reported that they have been similarly dismissed when asking where the toilets for women are in venues and the prevailing attitude against women wanting single sex female spaces and services suggests that that type of reaction is not unheard of or unusual.

Your attitude to the woman complaining is exactly like that shown by the NHS to the woman who was raped whilst in their care. It is sheer unadulterated hatred to women.

Can I just add, I've been fortunate and never been in any of these situations.
My brothers have.

I have, however, been on the receiving end of sexual assault and harassment.
My brothers haven't.

Hoppinggreen · 29/03/2022 11:25

And now we are all Right wing apparently
Firstly nobody knows the political leanings of anyone on here unless they clearly state them and secondly being Right or Left wing isn’t actually an insult nor is it a virtue

Franca123 · 29/03/2022 11:24

Pearl clutching. It's like men's rights activism bingo. Protecting the interest of women is not pearl clutching OP. Use an actual argument rather than trying to right me off as a human being.

Enough4me · 29/03/2022 11:24

As in reported what she saw, through a tweet. This was based on a woman's experience. She had the freedom to see this and report on it. As a woman I want to know that staff at venues laugh at women looking for women's loos as this tells me their view on womens safety and dignity.

Do you think the staff were wrong to laugh?

Helleofabore · 29/03/2022 11:23

Oh.... Pearl clutches, idiots, liars, hysterical, cranks, right wing, pathetic...

It really is never ending isn't it?

Then women also get shamed for advocating for their rights to have single sex spaces that excludes all males (over the age of 8) and told that we don't seem to be interested in women struggling with real problems like inequality and cost of living.

I mean, there is a sense of ridiculousness that OP calls our attention to women suffering with inequality on a thread, started by them, to start abusing two women attempting to point out the inequality of toilet provision, where a woman was laughed at for asking for a female single sex toilet.

But hey ho! This tactic is the 'women you have to focus on what we say' activist tactic.

It seems to defy those who use it that they are speaking to women who are very much involved in those very issues too... and you know, women are very capable of multi-tasking! Plus that women also have the autonomy to make the decisions on what to prioritise for themselves.

It also defies the very fact that there are posters on this thread actually 'living' or have 'lived' those very real problems, so do happen to know quite a bit about them.

This is what happens when a poster is so deeply entrenched in believing their views are the only right views that you can simply continue to demonise and monster others who don't agree.

Hoppinggreen · 29/03/2022 11:22

@StarlightLady

I would go for the toilets which have the shortest queue, regardless of whether that’s the ladies or gender neutral.
That is not a conscious choice to use a gender neutral toilet though as a preference
girlmom21 · 29/03/2022 11:21

The lack of protection from a union isn't more important than the lack of protection from men when you're in a vulnerable position like using the toilet. I'm sorry that you think it is.

We don't have to compromise on where we should have equality.
Economics doesn't trump safety.

TeaKlaxon · 29/03/2022 11:19

@girlmom21

while women are struggling with real problems like inequality

Like not having the same toilet access as men?!?! That's the whole issue. Women's safety and comfort has been compromised here and you think it's no issue, but it's the whole point, which you claim to care about too...

No.

Inequality, by the way, that has been championed and voted for by Lucy Allen and her cronies. But sure, keep cosying up to her and other right wing ideologues. They sure have a track record of delivering for women!

Lucy Allen reported what she saw.

Was it right she was laughed at?

Umm, no she didn't.

Lucy Allen (even in his own world of misinformation) doesn't claim she saw anything.

I do dislike people who propogate misinformation.

Like your OP where you said Lucy Allen made the claim no women's toilet existed at the Barbican when she did no such thing - which you still refuse to acknowledge - and instead keep saying she's been known to lie but deny you're saying the woman in question doesn't exist Confused

TeaKlaxon · 29/03/2022 11:12
@TeaKlaxon you're still choosing to completely ignore the fact this woman was laughed at when she asked where they were.

She was not shown or told where the toilets were, therefore the venue did not cater to her needs.

I'm not comparing her to a disabled person - I'm making a very clear point that accessibility is important and if a venue doesn't cater to your needs then choosing not to attend said venue does not equate to 'throwing a strop'.
Stop saying it is a fact that she was laughed at.

A claim is not a fact.

Especially a claim from an MP who is a proven liar.

TeaKlaxon · 29/03/2022 11:10

@Franca123

I find the OP's attitude to women horrible. Hysteria. Crank. Idiot. A woman dares step out of line and this is the punishment they get. I hope the boys are being really nice to you for throwing the rest of us under the bus. What is it that made you hate women so much OP?
I don't hate other women.

I do dislike people who lie, like Lucy Allen.

I do dislike people who propogate misinformation.

I do dislike people who call me a gender traitor, a handmaiden or whatever other insults they deem fit and then clutch their pearls when I point out the history of lies and crankery on their side.

And I do dislike people who think allying with right wing ideologues to address what is essentially a non-issue, while women are struggling with real problems like inequality and cost of living caused by the very same ideologues they are cosying up to is feminism in any sense of the word.

Hate? Nah. If anything I pity the world view of anyone who is so pathetic that they would decide not to go to an arts venue because they have one gender neutral toilet as compared to five womens toilets.

Linguini · 29/03/2022 11:07

Let me make this clear, do you, the op, believe that it is impossible to tell the difference between grown men and women without resorting to genital inspections?

I'd like to know too 😂

TeaKlaxon · 29/03/2022 11:05

@girlmom21

(b) opting out of arts and culture to throw a strop

I don't think not attending a venue that can't meet your needs is throwing a strop, personally.

If there was one disabled toilet and 500 disabled seats for a show, you'd expect disabled people to be rightly upset that their needs weren't accommodated for, and therefore would expect them to avoid that venue until they were accommodated for.

You say the same about women and suddenly they're throwing a strop.

Yet again for those in the cheap seats.

The Barbican has womens toilets. Five of them. One on every single floor and two on the first floor.

A venue that 'can't meet your needs' indeed.

Look, no skin off my nose if gender crits isolate themselves from ever increasing realms of public life. But it is absolutely crank behvaiour.

And pretty insulting to compare that situation with disabled people.

OP posts:
MyLittlePhonyPony · 29/03/2022 11:03

@TeaKlaxon

I think we're at cross purposes there.

I don't think genital inspections are necessary. People are able to tell the difference between men and women easily despite the trappings they wear. Height, skeleton, muscle, hand span are all markers we are evolutionary designed to assess to tell the sex of an individual.

He'll, even the way some people talk to others on social media is a dead giveaway for their sex.

My question was, do you think men and women can't tell the difference between the sexes without looking at a penis (or lack of).

Let me make this clear, do you, the op, believe that it is impossible to tell the difference between grown men and women without resorting to genital inspections?

Enough4me · 29/03/2022 10:59

@Linguini it's the TRA circle of life. When they get to the point where they see that women are forced in the position of being shields/victims for men they cycle back to the start. They never address the impact - the damage - to girls and women. It's almost as if it's obviously all about men.
