To wonder why an MP is lying about womens bathrooms?

709 replies

TeaKlaxon · 28/03/2022 09:33

Lucy Allen has tweeted that the Barbican has mens bathrooms and gender neutral bathrooms, but no womens bathrooms.

Lots of twitter users told her that was wrong.

The Barbican itself told her it's wrong.

But the tweet remains. AIBU to think that if an MP gets something wrong, they should apologise and remove the lie? Or to think that this is deliberate misinformation to further the myth of women being 'erased'?

Further in? Actually the gender neutral toilets are further from the main entrances and exits than the women's toilets.

Not quite!

Further up? There's a women's toilet on the Ground Floor and First Floor. The gender neutral toilets are on floor 1.5.

You do know I was not talking about each individual loo against any other. That in general the main concourse, easy to find loos are the ones that have been changed. That is my recent memory. I had to go elsewhere to find a female loo. There wasn't one in the usual places, there were gender neutral loos instead. I didn't spend any of my time counting them, I just needed a wee at two different moments in time!

Not always with all the other loos? You mean the way it has always been in the Barbican?

Aren't we talking about the Barbican?!?!?!

When on some floors the womens loo is on one side of the auditorium and the mens loo is on the other side of the auditorium? Are you also pissed off that the mens loo is not with the other loos?

As I said, when there is a 'bank' of loos it is often the womens that get changed

No male loos have been replaced? According to @Franca123 that's not correct - both the mens and womens on 1.5 floor are now gender neutral.

I had indeed missed that. I don't go into male or gender neutral loos and had missed that one of them had been changed.

That's because I am talking about my recent experience with the changes. And no, I am not stupid, not an idiot! I am a woman who was surprised to see gender neutral loos and no womens loos in some locations.

There are at least 5 posters who've said they have struggled to find the toilets and at least 2 who have said certain toilets get closed off at certain points in the day.

If you don't attend a setting often, or it's your first time visiting, it's obviously a lot more difficult to navigate than if you're there often.

If you know what the layout was like, it's much easier to find the remaining women's toilets if the ones you intended to use have changed or are otherwise unavailable to use.

It's fine if the first time you went you happened to find womens toilets but if you were in an area of the building where there were none, and you asked where they were and were laughed out, you wouldn't know whether womens toilets existed or not. Regardless of what you claim, many people would assume that meant there were no womens-only toilets.

I don't understand why this is so hard to comprehend.

Regardless, I don't understand why the experience of a butch lesbian means that women shouldn't have access to single-sex spaces. Would you then blame that woman if she got insulted in the ladies toilets when gender neutral toilets were available? Of course not.

DdraigGoch · 28/03/2022 15:35

The post you quoted was explicitly responding to a poster claiming that 'many' posters had difficulty finding women's toilets in the Barbican.

And you have claimed that many butch lesbians encounter problems, yet have only referenced one of them.

I'm not denying that Eloise has encountered problems, I don't know who she is so I can't judge. Yet you are determined to disbelieve a woman and call her a liar solely on the basis that you personally were fine. You don't know this woman either, so you likewise can't judge or accuse her of lying.

I'm only holding your posts up to the same standards that you seem to expect of everyone else.

Based on the facts that you didn't read the tweet in full and that you intuited something or other!

Just to be clear, are we still discussing this tweet:

I received this message today: “I was at the Barbican yesterday where there were male toilets, disabled toilets, and gender neutral toilets. I asked where were the female toilets as I am not gender neutral I am a woman and they laughed in my face. Women are being erased.”

The one where an MP tweeted about a woman who had to ask where the single sex female toilets were and was laughed at. And obviously not told where they were because she is under the impression there is none. This tweet?

Franca123 · 28/03/2022 15:34

I said nothing of the sort. I said the Barbicans floor plan wasn't accurate.

TeaKlaxon · 28/03/2022 15:31

@SamphiretheStickerist

a real, identified person who has described her experience in public and been called a liar.

But YOU CALLED 2 WOMEN LIARS, one a verifiable woman, an MP and one of her constituents, who she cannot name for legal reasons.

Based on the facts that you didn't read the tweet in full and that you intuited something or other!

I read the tweet in full.

It remains blatant misinformation.

@daimbarsatemydogsbone

How many posters have said they have been in the Barbican and been unable to find the women's bathrooms?

100% because there aren't any public bathrooms at all.

Hmm

Oh, I can find them! As I said, they are further in, further up and not always with all the other loos. Sometimes they have been replaced by the gender neutral ones.

No male loos have been replaced by gender neutral ones. Only women have lost single sex spaces, as usual!

But why doesn't the floor plan show accurately what toilets they have or don't have? Why can't we just solve this now but opening up the published floor plan on their website? Why don't they mark gender neutral toilets on the floor plan?!

For someone not asking anyone to believe them you aren't half posting a lot of defensive posts Grin

Clymene · 28/03/2022 15:25

In any event, isn't the point that @TeaKlaxon is spreading falsehoods by claiming that both Allen and her constituent said that there were no women's toilets at the Barbican which is patently untrue?

TeaKlaxon · 28/03/2022 15:24

@SamphiretheStickerist

I will never make an apology for placing more stock in what I'm told by a real person whose identity is verifiable than by anonymous posters on an internet discussion site.

And @TeaKlaxon promptly vanishes in a puff of logic.

The difference is that I'm not asking anyone here to believe my experience over that of a real, identified person who has described her experience in public and been called a liar.

Do you mean me @TeaKlaxon?

I've been doing other things. I said I found it difficult to find the women's toilets when I was there and then in a subsequent post, that I was going to go and check the toilet provision next week as I couldn't get there any earlier.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/03/2022 15:23

Being gender nonconforming is a very broad term

Yes. For a woman, saying "no, fuck off" to sexist male people who think you should ignore your own feelings and centre their needs instead, uncomplainingly, with a smile, is also "gender non conforming".

TeaKlaxon · 28/03/2022 15:23

@DdraigGoch

How many posters have said they have been in the Barbican and been unable to find the women's bathrooms?

How many butch lesbians were you claiming were excluded from the women's toilets? So far you've only referenced one.

The post you quoted was explicitly responding to a poster claiming that 'many' posters had difficulty finding women's toilets in the Barbican.

I can only find one.

On the other hand, I can count at least five who say they had no trouble finding womens toilets in the Barbican.

OP posts:
SamphiretheStickerist · 28/03/2022 15:22

because this is a movement that frequently tries to claim to defend lesbians. So the fact that lesbians are more likely to be impacted by their fake hysteria is absolutely relevant.

Say what now? A movement?

And have you missed how many posters responding are lesbians!?!?!

Fake hysteria? You might want to look up the definition of hysteria - unless of course you are fond of redundent words!

TeaKlaxon · 28/03/2022 15:21

@Brainwave89

? I am a Barbican member. Fair point that we could do with more toilets per se, but there are plenty around compared to most arts venues. Worth noting that you can use the toilets in the restaurants as well as these are public.
Yep. Even though there can be queues for the womens loos at busy times during intervals etc, I've found the Barbican to be much better than most venues in terms of the queues.

Partly because it has more loos than lots of (especially older) theatres and also because it has different venues within the centre, I've generally found that if I walk two minutes I can usually find a loo without a queue.

"Gender neutral doesn't have to mean mixed sex

It coiukd equally mean single sex any gender surely?"

Nope. It means that dicks are welcome here. And if you don't like that, it's your problem

DdraigGoch · 28/03/2022 15:19

@mudgetastic

You'd have to specify which sex on the sign though
TeaKlaxon · 28/03/2022 15:18

@mudgetastic

Yet there seems to be no evidence of either the hunt for trans people or the discrimination against lesbians and you have agreed that the lesbian is an unnecessary label. And actually gender none conforming women may look totally female and be none conforming in many other ways. Sloppy use of language or sloppy stereotypes

Bored now

Well now isn't that a slam dunk argument Shock

And no, lesbian isn't an unnecessary label, because this is a movement that frequently tries to claim to defend lesbians. So the fact that lesbians are more likely to be impacted by their fake hysteria is absolutely relevant.
