Well, globally gender critical ideology is aligned with the right/far right & with anti-abortion, anti-divorce and anti-contraception campaigners.

Bolsonaro, Salvini, Putin, US Republican party, Tucker goddamn Carlson on Fox News, US Southern Baptists, Catholic Church. From the neo-nazi truckers in Canada to the Liberal party in Australia pretty much the whole gamut of right-wingers side with mumsnet on trans issues.

This is the side you’ve picked and they really really hate you.

Always reminds me of that old Onion headline about the second world war ‘Japanese side with white supremacists in well-thought out plan’

(There will be people coming along in a sec saying that I’ve cherry-picked. Sure I have. Look at that list again. Oh - and Iran doesn’t support trans rights - they support surgical sex changes.)

That's a lot of words you have written there, but I still will never believe that people can change sex, that males should be in female spaces or that kids should be injected with powerful drugs to potentially permanently mess up their endocrine systems.

I literally couldn't give a fuck whose 'side' that means I'm on. If anything, it just makes me even more disgusted and disappointed that the 'side' I thought I was on doesn't give a flying shite about women or children.

@nepeta

‘
As I wrote earlier, the groups and people you list want to keep the female biological sex down. We want to stop that from happening. Both objectives need to have a name for the female biological sex. The rest of what the groups and people you mention is diametrically opposite to what we want.’

Or being able to split humanity by biological sex is intrinsically helpful to people who want to oppress women?

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 25/03/2022 19:20

Yes, @DomesticatedZombie - that's why I'm confused.

A bit of a google found this - WhatsApp and youtube are still going, or were. How bizarre.

What you are doing is forced-harnessing, really.

Ooh I like it. The same sort of idea as forced teaming, but not involving themselves and trying to claim a common aim.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/03/2022 19:14

"Water is wet" Adolf Hitler

"Up is not down" Pol Pot

Nope. We have NOT picked that side, though they do hate us (and you, too). What you are doing is forced-harnessing, really.

I could equally argue that the transgender movement aligns with the far right anti-feminists when the latter argue that boys should play football and girls should play with dolls while the former argue that a girl playing foot ball might be a girl or that a boy playing with dolls might be a girl.

I am NOT arguing that, but I could, because both the traditional sexist rules and the definition of 'women' and 'girls' in the gender identity movement rely heavily on the importance of regressive gender roles and sexist stereotypes, to take the place of biological sex in defining who is a woman/boy and who is a man/boy.

Basically what I’m trying to say is I’m not thick, I know what game the dictators are playing Grin

I haven’t picked that side, I came to these conclusions on my own thanks.

Besides, I don’t think any of those people really support women’s rights, they’re just anti woke which isn’t the same thing at all. They’ve ostensibly picked our side, not the other way around.

@DomesticatedZombie

Lots of Russian money in gender critical organisations.

Grin Batshit. Absolutely batshit.

Gender critical organisations have lots of money??? That, alone, is a hilarious argument.

@vivariumvivariumsvivaria

Is twitter used a lot in Russia?

I'd assume JKR generates a lot of traffic on that site, so, Putin using her as a tool of disruption makes sense.

He'd better watch, though - bet the Scythians didn't leave the Steppes any more than the Witches left Scotland.

Twitter's been blocked/banned in Russia since they first invaded Ukraine, afair. As is Facebook, and Google News.
nepeta · 25/03/2022 18:43

There is no way of stopping someone who decides to do so from harnessing their ideology to yours by them arguing that you two are for the same things, when it blatantly is a lie. No way.

JK Rowling answered this quite brilliantly on Twitter, but got thousands of trans activists arguing that she and Putin clearly share their ideologies.

The same problem comes up when left-wing women protesting their erasure are force-harnessed together with right-wing causes. That the two camps have opposite reasons for wanting female biological sex not to be erased is ignored. (Conservatives want to keep the female sex subordinate, feminists want equality of the sexes, but both causes need to be able to define what 'women' mean.)

Then there is the other kind of forced-harnessing-together: Trans activists link their cause with anti-racism or disability rights, arguing that anyone opposed to the erasure of women is also guilty of racism and ableism. That is simply not true, but can be quite effective.

All the things I have mentioned are dishonest forms of debating when someone cannot actually address the real questions.

And Putin is a misogynist who wants regressive sex roles in Russia to stay forever. In that particular aspect he actually has a little more in common with those who define 'women' by clothing of by femininity than he has with JK Rowling.

SevenWaystoLeave · 25/03/2022 18:32

@Yewtown

Perhaps Putin and his troll army are responsible for fanning the flames of gender ideology and cancel culture. It's quite possible it is being used a ruse to destabilise the west.
Lots of Russian money in gender critical organisations.
IvyTwines · 25/03/2022 18:28

@BootsAndRoots

The idea that Putin is behind the culture war is overblown, particularly as only a few weeks ago we were told that Putin was funding the feminist organisations, and now people are claiming that he's behind the trans organisations.

It seems to be that everything that is unpopular somehow gets blamed on Putin-bots.

Twitter's anonymity and 'likes' boosting function has left society completely open to this, in the age of the 'attention economy'. The BBC Radio 4 programme features a US organisation that has been tracking Russian bot farm activity and says it is happening. The aim, the programme says, is to stoke division and distract from what they are doing. And it has.

@PonyPatter44

So first we get funded by the American religious right, and now by Putin? Wheres my bloody yacht?
I want a faberge egg.

Takes a bit of dusting, ridiculously kitsch, totally useless, but, Easter's coming and despite myself, I always liked them.

Besides, the exhibition at the V+A is sold out, so, I'll take an egg or two, thanks.

HardyBuckette · 25/03/2022 17:58

It's not that he's behind it, but the Russian state clearly attempts to fuel and utilise it for their own interests.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/03/2022 17:51

Twitter is utterly batshit at the moment, I'm not surprised Putin is doing this.

HardyBuckette · 25/03/2022 17:34

@Absurdle

They really need to realise that they are providing useful propaganda for Putin.
Yup, engaging with any of this is doing exactly what he wants. The UK is providing significant military support to Ukraine at the moment, and Putin would dearly love to see that stop. Problem is, there's a strong pro-Ukraine consensus here at the moment and the population want it to continue. So obviously he wants to stoke culture war shit.
tara66 · 25/03/2022 15:29

Well if Putin can understand the JKR thing I wish he would explain it to me. I heard him today on SKY news - doesn't he know there are versions of Anna Karenina on Amazon Prime Video practically all the time? ''The West is trying to cancel Russian culture'' - indeed!?

IvyTwines · 25/03/2022 15:26

I don't understand how the people who are adamant that Russian interference promoted Brexit and Trump don't also question the sudden rise of gender ideology through social media, something that is absolutely driving a wedge through Western politics and families. The Hackers says the Russians promoted the third, Left-wing candidate in the US election to split the Democrat vote. Gender ideology is doing the same thing.

nepeta · 25/03/2022 15:25

Yes, it comes from Putin's old handbook How To Destabilise The West. He did that in 2015 with the refugee crisis in Europe, too.

It's hilarious to see a sexist/misogynist (Putin) argue against a group which also is quite sexist/misogynist (people attacking JK Rowling for stating that being female might have a biological basis and also might be the way most of us identify our social gender).

But only hilarious in the dark sense of humour.
