Twitter is awash with blue ticks doing lots of “JKR is on a level with putin” and sky news have helpfully Hmm amplified it

You are on MN and you have been told what it means here.
Ooh.
That's you told well and proper.
What it means '' here''?
What, does it have a different meaning here to everywhere else?

But that isn’t what gender critical means - it might have been the original intention, but usage has turned the phrase into a polite way of saying ‘anti-trans’

You are currently on a feminism forum. Your claims about what gender-critical as a term has turned into elsewhere are utterly, completely, perfectly and indubitably irrelevant.

You are on MN and you have been told what it means here. Otherwise, you may as well try to have an argument with mumsnetters over what the word "rubber" means when we're discussing stationery, with reference to American anecdotes.

No. Gender critical means someone who is critical of the concept of gendered roles, gender stereotypes, and gender-based norms for which types of personality traits are acceptable for people who either biologically female or biologically male.

All those aspects of gender are used to keep the female sex down, and that is why we are critical of them.

The terms transphobic and anti-trans have experienced the kind of inflation where they no longer mean what they were intended to mean. The only way not to be called transphobic or anti-trans is to obey every demand from trans activists irrespective of its meaning. In particular, any attempt to hold onto one's own embodied gender identity as a woman or as a man is immediately stamped as transphobic and anti-trans.

This means that women whose identities ARE embodied are stripped of their gender identity as that cannot be based on living in a sexed body. This, in my books, truly is misogyny.

@PurgatoryOfPotholes

I wish Putin would fund me. I'm having to fit in campaigning about women's right to single-sex prisons (did you know that there are women in prison who have committed no crime who are there because it was supposed to be a "safe place" ) and hospital wards out of my own money and time.

And I do this along with general social obligations like donating to the food bank, and community projects. Also out of my own money.

Putin hasn't paid me a bent copper.

Ikr? I'm still terfing for free.

Worrafackingliberty, etc.

9th Rule of Misogyny - men always know the 'real reasons' for everything women do and say.

All the usual suspects on Twitter practically having a collective orgasm. They really think this Vlad wind up is a massive game changer. Millions of women will wake up and think ' wait...are we the baddies?' They will invite trans into their spaces. We have all learned an important lesson today, haven't we Dougal?
They think everyone is as stupid and lacking in critical thinking as they are. Not a one of them has decent arguments: it's all finger-wagging, name-calling and shaming tactics which are not working

Not by people who are actually gender critical though.

only a few weeks ago we were told that Putin was funding the feminist organisations, and now people are claiming that he's behind the trans organisations.
He doesn't care! He'll fund both, because the aim is to polarise and destabilise society so we don't trust each other.
It shows the influence/power JKR has that he pulled her in. Its a massive compliment. But yes, he's clever that now we are distracted

because the people with power who are backing that line are the ones who want to shred women’s rights

Exactlytwitter.com/i/status/1507159162752487425

You mean people like these in the video and all the TRA organisations like Stonewall who are campaigning to have the government remove women's rights to single sex facilities from the Equality Act.

nauticant · 25/03/2022 22:48

If you look at who his manipulation is most effective with, it does seem to be those who are driven by an irrational animus. Once he can tap into that, people can often be very malleable.

This is a very old story of course. There are precedents all over the place.

StillWeRise · 25/03/2022 22:47

Mumsnet-aligned gender critical views belong, world-wide to the far-right & the religiously intolerant, not to the rest of us.

and yet, without exception, the GC feminists - most of whom would be best described as radical feminists- that I know IRL and on line are left wing and/or green, trade unionists, veterans of many campaigns around women's rights, reproductive rights, anti racism, gay rights, against section 28, etc etc. A few may be religious, but none are religiously intolerant. Many of us came to this position naively wanting to 'be kind' and only when we saw the reality of the danger to women's rights were our eyes opened. Trust me there's a million things I'd rather be doing. It's like having to face yet another challenge to our reproductive rights. I feel like- shit really? we've got to take this on now?

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 25/03/2022 22:45

I said months ago that if Putin supported gender identity theory, trans activists would love him forever, no matter whatever else he did.

None of this shocks me.

I don't give a fuck what kind of deliberately divisive comments Putin makes, and if trans activists do, they're just telling me what I already knew: featherbrains are blown away by the slightest breeze.

DomesticatedZombie · 25/03/2022 22:42

@nauticant

It took one comment by Putin, a single comment, and thousands of trans activists and trans allies immediately danced to his tune. It shows how easy they are to manipulate, and how many of them have no filter whatsoever about where they'll allow manipulation to come from.

Putin is engaged with propaganda as a distraction from the war in Ukraine and these people are willing to unthinkingly do his work for him. This is remarkable.

Well, he knows how to manipulate the discourse. And there will never be a shortage of people with very limited critical thinking ability, unfortunately.
Hasselhoffsheadband · 25/03/2022 22:41

Christ just had a good old read of Twitter - they are so busy congratulating each other on 'JKGB Rowling' and '#putinwontwheesht' that they are completely oblivious to the fact that they are all doing exactly what he wants them to do!

littlbrowndog · 25/03/2022 22:36

Lots of Russian money in gender critical organisations.

Grin Batshit. Absolutely batshit.

Oh can’t wait for my money. Excited

Ah. Redefining language again. Like the definition of woman.

So now we need a new word for those of us who aren't anti trans but disagree that gender is more important than sex. The people who used to be called 'gender critical' until 5 minutes ago.

But those people you call 'gender critical' aren't critical of gender at all. They love gender, just as TRAs do.

Hasselhoffsheadband · 25/03/2022 22:17

@nauticant

Has the irresistible lure of blaming JKR for what Putin has been up to brought Quaggars out of retirement or have they been back for a while?
Yeah I thought that too! 🤣

Sorry, but no. Mumsnet-aligned gender critical views belong, world-wide to the far-right & the religiously intolerant, not to the rest of us.

Look. I get the intellectual appeal of ‘if you lose the ability to define women by bio sex then you lose the ability to protect women.’ It’s a beautiful theory - hangs together perfectly.

But it shatters when it hits reality - because the people with power who are backing that line are the ones who want to shred women’s rights.

I don’t much like that either.[/quote]
The confidence with which you say this is quite amusing.

Do you honestly think the way to end the oppression of women is to pretend there aren't two sexes? Confused

nauticant · 25/03/2022 22:11

I see the thread has an Animal Farm tribute act.

Once again showing that you don't understand what gender critical means. Being gender critical has nothing in common with those groups (apart from knowing that it's not possible to change sex).

As JK Rowling put it:
Dress however you please.
Call yourself whatever you like.
Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you.

Can you explain what is intolerant about those views?
