Twitter is awash with blue ticks doing lots of “JKR is on a level with putin” and sky news have helpfully Hmm amplified it

I'm sure Putin agrees with me about loads of stuff, Jizzle. The sun goes down in the west. It's Saturday. 24 hours in a day. That sort of thing.

Jizzle · 26/03/2022 17:51

Maybe the bigots in here will finally start to realise what side of history they are on when even Putin agrees with them….

tabbycatstripy · 26/03/2022 15:11

Why aren't people telling certain misogynistic left-wing commentators that they must support mass murder because they agree with Pol Pot and Stalin that that we should nationalise key industries?

@ScreamingMeMe

It's going to be fascinating to look back on, that's for sure. People are going to write textbooks about this madness.
Assuming there is a future and assuming that future is sane. I think you are right, though. At one point the dam will burst and all the swallowed angry opinions of so many will flood the public sphere and probably change things over time.

But the process has been incredibly costly for children incorrectly transitioned (with the health consequences which follow), for women's rights (as we are now rather rapidly going backwards in areas such as surrogacy, prostitution, pornography, and as the immediate winners will be from the right when the dam bursts).

I did think, Selkies, that it all makes for a great novel plot.

Selkiesarereal · 26/03/2022 14:13

What has poor JKR done to deserve the attention of Putin. Can you imagine her on Thursday morning looking out the window at the beautiful day only to then discover that the madman has somehow cited you in their rants.

And then to add insult to injury all the tra’s have leapt onto the ravings of said madman as a way to once again prove their point that you are the font of all evil.

You just couldn’t make this up!

tabbycatstripy · 26/03/2022 14:12

I'm not in the least bit concerned that Putin agrees with me. I'm concerned Joe Biden doesn't. I know I have my facts right on this as far as anyone does, so it's a worry to see any person I previously considered sensible taking the opposite position.

nepeta · 26/03/2022 13:52

@ScreamingMeMe

I think twitter has a disproportionate affect on what the media reports, but I'm not sure the general population put much stock in it.

I was just pondering: has Owen Jones always been this dogmatic? I still think he did some great work with his Chavs book, but was he the same person we're seeing now?

I wasn't familiar with his work before. I have read enough from him to spot him as a misogynist, though.

You have four more moves to connect it to Kevin Bacon.

@Ereshkigalangcleg

Interesting that he attributes more sincerity to Putin, currently waging war in Ukraine, than he does to Rowling, who wrote an entire essay explaining she didn't hate trans people

It really is. And I will take a guess at what that word is DomesticatedZombie!

It's interesting that it's the exact same word - only in Cyrillic script, of course. Common root I suppose.

Oh.....so Owen Jones went to a wedding in Malta? He contributed to the tourism of a country where abortion is illegal? Well that's it then - he is clearly anti-abortion! He is a far right anti-abortionist!

He's, he's......... he is a natural ally of Caroline Farrow! Shock

That's how this works, yes?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/03/2022 11:40

I agree, Ova.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/03/2022 11:39

There are debates over who receive Russian money, but for some reason the Independent and Evening Standard are exempt. No doubt if the Independent started running feminist articles we'd see all the Russian influence arguments start.

This is an important point.

OvaHere · 26/03/2022 11:38

Men, whoever they are, are to be believed and taken at their word. Women are not.

This is why when women say we are women we're told we are wrong and when men say they are women it's taken as gospel.

Owen Jones would take a man's word about anything over a woman.

BootsAndRoots · 26/03/2022 11:36

Outside of Twitter has this actually had much impact? The mass media are covering it, but it is a minor story, almost a light relief story. Yet we invest too much into this idea that Russian misinformation is having a serious effect. The media only go on about Russian misinformation when a political vote doesn't go their way.

IRL I don't know anyone who uses Twitter, but because the media uses it they think everyone uses it. Children use social media, but they're too young to vote.

We have seen too many discussions from people who spend all their time online saying that they don't understand how the person in the street is oblivious to the whole trans rights debate. Is it because IRL social media has much less of an impact than what people suspect?

There is Russian misinformation, but I believe its role is massively overplayed, yet at the same no ever talks about China.

@SantaCarlaCalifornia

What does "far-right" mean nowadays?

Because it seems to be thrown at anyone that doesn't immediately fall to the floor and flagellate themselves while chanting "TWAW".

Yes, far right, alt right, bigot - all perfectly acceptable labels for someone who thinks men can't become women.
Hasselhoffsheadband · 26/03/2022 11:30

NitroNine · 26/03/2022 11:28

“The Last Leg”, interestingly - given their general stance - seemed to think Putin had no business making the comparison Hmm

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/03/2022 11:21

Also the passing of self ID in Malta is allegedly linked to corruption in politics including the death by car bomb of a journalist investigating the corruption. Perhaps Owen should have had his holiday elsewhere?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/03/2022 11:16

So he's anti-abortion then. Certainly didn't see him saying he could not risk funding the tourism industry of such a place.

Terrible behaviour, really, Owen.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/03/2022 11:14

@wigwam87

Not seeing any link to gender critical feminists or any gender critical people in the U.K. other than Caroline Farrow? Wikipedia is quite pro trans, so I was expecting to see something. Do you have anything?
