I think this piece should be challenged. It's factually incorrect and the journalist was inciting trouble.
You're giving the writer too much credit. This isn't journalism. It is very badly written, lacking substance and structure and fails to meet even basic standards of journalistic writing. For instance, the writer either doesn't understand how to quote correctly or speaks an atrocious English himself.
When you include quotes that are incomplete or just plain stupid like those here, the journalist indicates that he or she can indeed formulate correct sentences by including sic, usually in square brackets. Let's the reader know that yes, there's a mistake in the quote, but that's what the journalist got told. It's not his fault if it's nonsense, in other words. Of course my news writing professor would have given me an earful about failing to elicit something decent and my editor back when I was working at a daily paper would have refused to print this regardlessofhis opinion on the matter. But hey ho. It's 2022 and this is what goes for journalism in the information age.
