Some bearded American pillocks are objecting to the idea of Mumsnetters talking about feminism. Hadley Freeman and other feminists are doing an excellent job of responding.

@PermanentTemporary

One of my fondest MN memories was the US creationist (it was 2007, that was the nonsense du jour) who came over to tell us all about creationism, and who got extremely hot and bothered about the swearing on the thread. He was used to people giving him a hard time about the belief but couldn't stay calm at our 'potty mouths'. Different place, mate.
Oh I remember those threads. They were glorious! Grin

MNHQ has a habit of moving any trans issues to the feminism
boards so it becomes skewed. Feminism on Mumsnet isn't restricted to trans issues, it's just that the boards aren't used in the way these Twitter users think. Plenty of feminism related topics all over the site

Pretty sure if beardy tweeters thought a bit about it, or even came to look, they would be more scandalized by relationships board. After all pretty much the consensus on there is ltb.
The odd poster comes along to say is it really really worth leaving him because he forgot your birthday again, maybe he needs to see a dr about his anger, why dont you just do the whole mental load because how can we expect men to do that they are just so important blah blah, but mostly its ltb.

All the ltb posters are feminists, they just dont all know it yet.

Why do people (i.e. men) find it so surprising that women (the original cunty type) who are trying to conceive, are pregnant, recovering from a miscarriage or still birth, struggling with infertility, or have had children might think that biology is very real and very important. We can see the direct impact of what our sex class means and how we are treated for being biological women.

Mumsnet – come for the discussion on nappy rash, stay for the radical feminist discourse.

Yes,

I have said this before, but only one of the three axes of oppression which affect the largest numbers of people: sex, race and class, is currently being erased, and that is sex. Probably because it is mostly female people who are harmed by that erasure.

All other 'identities' must be respected, but not identities based on living as a biological female.

Dendrite · 24/03/2022 14:46

Terfin' USA

I came for the topic, but havr to say am being thoroughly entertained by these song-related quips. Encore!

Laniania · 24/03/2022 14:44

Why don't they get that the Maya threads are as much about our rights as an abortion thread, and in the case of most British women - though of course not all - currently far more pressing than the issue of abortion? Why WOULDN'T we be interested in our own rights?

I agree with all those who have said that much of the grass-roots feminism on mumsnet occurs on Relationships and of course these idiots would never bother venturing there. (And I hope they don't. They would add nothing.)

As for the tweet saying that we are all being manipulated by the Christian ultra-right - sure. Because Americans on the internet are so great at imitating the speech and vocabulary of British mums. Hmm Do they really think we wouldn't know? They probably think all those British accents in Hollywood are really accurate too.

EmperorsNewClothesBS · 24/03/2022 14:43

The hate coming off that thread is incredible! Shock

  1. I’ve never seen 95% of the trans type topics on MN, and I’m here ALOT. And have been for 15 years. Certainly never seen them all one one day / week etc. Vast majority of us have much broader interests!

  2. right wing… pull the other one!

  3. transphobic… I think they are referring to sensibly questioning nonsense using biological facts. Y’know like science.

  4. off-topic but I’m seeing sodding gambling ads on here. I thought MN was getting rid of this shite after an MNer lost her DH to gambling?

perhaps we should ask them to get moved onto the feminism boards? It bugs me that it is full of trans stuff which doesn't interest me as much as things like the gender pay gap and the things that Invisible Women covers

MNHQ created this division by splitting Feminism Chat (all issues) into Feminism Chat and Feminism Sex and Gender. Topics of more general interest that are started on S&G are moved onto Feminism Chat. Topics started on Feminism Chat get moved to S&G the moment that women are involved although it's not the sex/gender dichotomy.

There was a thread last week that was in and out of AIBU and Feminism S&G. It's absurd at times but we have a discussion space. If the Online Harms Bill succeeds women may rapidly find that we don't have readily accessible spaces to discuss that things that affect us because the spaces will be so easily censored and closed down. (Just look at the latest thread about the campaign for continued access to medical abortions.)

VestofAbsurdity · 24/03/2022 14:31

For lefty men not having any understanding of the status of women, the history of women and so on proves no hindrance on opining on this and similar questions. I thought that hilarious when I first came online, but now I am exhausted by it.

Not just lefty men, although they are definitely the worst, any men telling woman who they are, what they are, how they should think, behave, speak and what they must accept are beyond contempt as are the women who cheer them on.

MoltenLasagne · 24/03/2022 14:31

@LittleGwyneth

Makes me so angry. I don't always agree with how trans issues are discussed here, but MN is one of the few places in the world where women are prioritised. It's a genuine safe space, a place where you can ask anything and get advice about anything. It's amazing how angry that makes certain people.
The other place I can think of is Lipstick Alley who are, coincidentally, also big in supporting women to expect more from relationships, leave abusive men, and maintain single sex spaces.
BettyFilous · 24/03/2022 14:31

You should definitely nick the suggestion of ‘Terfing USA’ off this thread if your thread gets legs and you spill over into a new one LostTxn. Grin

LostTxn · 24/03/2022 14:26

Started a thread. Maybe in the right spot, maybe not. Might be a failure but I'll try.

“Muster point for new US posters directed here by noisy Twitter storm.”

CaveMum · 24/03/2022 14:26

Absolutely Mumsnet radicalized me! You know what else it did? It introduced me to a group of like minded women who I am still friends with 10 years on and we all still chat on a daily basis in a private Facebook group. We have all supported each other through infertility, childbirth, struggles with breastfeeding, the joys of toddlers, forays into school as well as cheating spouses, mental health issues, the death of parents and a myriad other issues.

Mumsnet empowers women, of course The Beards are afraid of it!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/03/2022 14:23

We ain't negotiating - we're just saying no.

That comes as a hell of a shock to some men.

I think it comes as a shock to them that we imagine we have any right to a say at all.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 24/03/2022 14:21

The beardy blokes on twitter remind me of this quote from Gavin de Becker (The Gift of Fear) talking about why women should ignore their socialisation and be less kind to protect their safety

"When a man says no in this culture [USA], it’s the end of the discussion. When a woman says no, it’s the beginning of a negotiation."

We ain't negotiating - we're just saying no.

That comes as a hell of a shock to some men.

in 2021, little interest compared to the 4 (?) threads on Maya F's hearing that have clocked up hundreds of posts each

Heaven forfend women following and discussing a live legal case that they are interested in, I mean how very dare they there's washing up to be done.

Take your misogyny, sexism and desperate attempts to control and police the speech and thoughts of women on here and shove it where the sun don't shine.

These men - they would get on really well with the Taliban with their outrage that women can have opinions of their own.

Not so progressive really.

Women talking about our interests, rights and needs, without male supervision. Oh dear, what is the world coming to, these days. /deadpan

We should have a Mumsnet day out. They're always fun.
