Are the wife and children really fine?

A man I used to be close friends with recently came out as a transwoman on Facebook. I was a bit surprised as when I knew them in their 20s they were just a typical man. They’re now mid 30s and married to a woman with three children.

Anyway in their post the second sentence was something along the lines of “Don’t worry my wife and children are fine”. I’ve seen it before in stories like this or when someone comes out as gay.
It’s almost like there’s going to be an accusation of homophobia or transphobia if they’re not alright with it. It just doesn’t feel right. If my partner or father came out with something like that it would change so many things in thinking about past relationships etc.

If you’re not trans then you’re cis. Sorry about it.

Arguing otherwise is about as tiresome as straight people arguing there shouldn’t be a word to describe people not being gay or bi.

ElaineFuchs, I honestly can't fiure out whether you are:

 • a true genderist zealot whose every post reveals the lunacy and authoiritarian absolutism of your ideology;
 • a gender critical plant whose every post seeks to highlight the lunacy and authoritarian absolutism of this ideology; or
 • a person who knows very well that he or she is spouting utter bilge but is revelling in the vicious misogny and homophobia that are intrinsic to this lunatic, authoritarian and absolutist ideology.

Either way, I've started to find your posts actually amusing now. On account of the lunacy, authoritarianism and absolutism being laid so bare. Naked as an ash tree in the moon of May it is.

Just one piece of advice though to you and all your fellow activists: lay off the accusations of various "isms" against people for their sexual preferences (and, indeed, orientations). Guess what - equality legislation and principles do not apply to the ride. Everybody reading this should note the attempts to police and break down people's boundaries around their bodies and sexual availability. It is a persistent and prevalent theme of certain ideologies currently being pushed in society.

My gender identity matches the sex I was assigned at birth.

Nobody assigned you a sex at birth. Your gender identity is literally the clothes you wear and the things you do. If you 100% do all the stereotypical of your sex, and wear all the things 100% stereotypical of your sex that still makes you just a bog standard human who likes things and wears clothes.

Is it that you are desperate to be liked that you come out with this utter 'nonsense on stilts'?

DrSbaitso · 22/03/2022 18:14

We are having our language turned to Newspeak by attempts to conflate sex and gender, and pretensions that sex is "assigned" rather than observed, and we are the ones trying to control language?

Man, woman, transman, transwoman.

PinaColada123456 · 22/03/2022 18:12

@ElaineFuchs You mean like these ANATOMICAL characteristics that forensic investigators and Coroners use to determine the sex of a person (next to teeth of course)?

Are the wife and children really fine?
Whatsnewpussyhat · 22/03/2022 18:10

Why should anyone else get to tell someone they are not allowed to use the word cis

Why should anyone else get to tell someone they must pretend men are women?

So how else do you propose to distinguish people who are trans from people who are not when it’s relevant to a discussion

Well if discussing biology and anything sex based, the words man and women or male and female work perfectly.

If you really need to pretend we can't tell the difference, then you can use women and transwomen. We don't need the prefix.

daisyjgrey · 22/03/2022 18:08

Just as I don't think the trans person in that relationship can speak for their wife and children, I don't think we can speak for them either.

PinaColada123456 · 22/03/2022 18:06

@TeaKlaxon So how else do you propose to distinguish people who are trans from people who are not when it’s relevant to a discussion.

That is easy. It is how we have been distinguishing trans from people who are not for decades.

Woman - Transwoman
Man - Transman

You are simply a Woman. You don't need any prefix in front. You're either a Woman or Transwoman. Women who identify with the sex they were born are simply called Women.

It's really as simple as that. No need to complicate things that are not complicated.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 22/03/2022 18:03

@TeaKlaxon also I'm not a transphobe.

Just like I aren't 'cis'.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/03/2022 18:03

I am cisgender. My gender identity matches the sex I was assigned at birth.

If you want to use a meaningless in-group label that gels with your ideological beliefs to describe yourself and your personal identity that's up to you. I am not "cisgender" because it's not my meaningless in-group label or beliefs, it's yours. Women only come in one sex, and that is female. Males are the opposite sex to me, regardless of personal identity.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 22/03/2022 18:02

@TeaKlaxon because it doesn't exist. It's not a term accepted on this board because it's pure bullshit. You can call yourself what you like.

A transwoman and transman is fine. We don't need a sub category for a woman who was born a woman thanks.

fruitbat987 · 22/03/2022 17:58

sex is noted and observed, not assigned

fruitbat987 · 22/03/2022 17:58

but TeaKlaxon you weren't assigned a "gender" at birth. Your sex was noted by the doctor/midwife, that's all.

DownWhichOfLate · 22/03/2022 17:57

Your sex wasn’t assigned at birth.

TeaKlaxon · 22/03/2022 17:56
@ElaineFuchs do you enjoy being wrong?

You have repeatedly been told not to use the made up word cis. So stop. Cis is not a thing. Ffs
I am cisgender. My gender identity matches the sex I was assigned at birth.

That is plainly not the case for everyone.

So how else do you propose to distinguish people who are trans from people who are not when it’s relevant to a discussion.

Weird how transphobes claim to be silenced but it’s actually then telling people what they can and cannot say.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 22/03/2022 17:55

Elaine is doing a fantastic job of showing just how batshit the religion of gender identity ideology actually is.

Mummyoflittledragon · 22/03/2022 17:46

@ElaineFuchs

What do you mean by Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for removing gender from our society!?

Do you mean like this publication from Harvard University? lgbtq.hkspublications.org/2021/07/25/how-to-abolish-gender/

Because this didn’t translate well in Afghanistan. Did gender studies lose Afghanistan? How Ivy League diplomats sought to remake Afghanistan in Harvard’s image.
I know this is behind a wall. But it is free to read this article.
I also recommend watching the video teaching an ‘art’ class to a group of tribal leaders with the aid of a photo of a metal toilet as an example art. spectatorworld.com/topic/did-gender-studies-lose-afghanistan/

To get from where things are currently in developing countries to where Harvard policy makers are suggesting would involve a paradigm shift of monumental proportions.

Colonialism didn’t work yet people keep on pushing to recreate societies in their image.

HelenWick · 22/03/2022 17:45

@Movingonup22

Well it’s never a transman coming out being happily supported by his husband is it???
THIS ^^
DrSbaitso · 22/03/2022 17:37

There is no specific way or defining characteristic to be a man or a woman.

Males are the reproductive class capable of producing sperm. Female is the reproductive sex class capable of producing ova. This stands even if you are not producing gametes for whatever reason. You are still of the sex class that is capable of doing so.

A man is an adult human male. A woman is an adult human female.

Trans people, whose gender identities do not align with their natal sex, need only add the prefix "trans" to make it clear who they are.

It is regrettable that a trans person is unlikely to be able to go their whole life never, ever having to confront the fact that their natal sex doesn't match that gender identity. However, until the world becomes equally keen to tell me that the things I don't like about being my sex, such as periods and menopause, also aren't real, it's just going to have to be part and parcel of the body one lives in. We can't control or deny everything.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 22/03/2022 17:36

Lifeinthelastlane · 22/03/2022 17:35

@Theeyeballsinthefuckingsky

Astonishingly the nursing and midwifery council doesnt hold any information on the process for assigning sex at birth

www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/information_on_assigning_sex_at

It’s a shocker I know

Brilliant !
DrSbaitso · 22/03/2022 17:32

And another question, Elaine...if sex is such a nebulous non-thing that just gets assigned without reason, how do trans people know which changing room they want to go in?

And what do they think transition is?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 22/03/2022 17:32

A trans woman is an adult female person. A trans man is an adult male person. Female and male here refer to gender identity.

There is no specific way or defining characteristic to be a man or a woman. For examples, you might consider looking at yourself or those you know and see how they perform or express their gender, for example they might use gendered pronouns.

Oh dear.

Moving on ...

DrSbaitso · 22/03/2022 17:29

But sincere question, Elaine, honestly...why is it so objectionable to say a trans person is a person whose gender identity does not align with their natal sex?

PermanentTemporary · 22/03/2022 17:28

The reason someone transitions would surely affect how fine anyone is with it. My friend with a spouse who has transitioned to nonbinary is not fine. But that's more about the marriage as a whole.
