New business on the block selling organic tampons via post and so on, called Yoppie. This is their instagram.

Text of instagram post:

'Most bleeders know how they are impacted by their period, but unfortunately aren't in touch with their feelings & symptoms in the other phases of their cycle. We are here to change that.'

I just can't stop laughing at this one. Grin

Will tell DH as he goes for a bike ride once a month ergo he "experiences a monthly cycle" Grin

One of my first jobs introduced me to the plain English campaign to make all communication accessible, you realise very quickly how debilitating it can be for some people if you mince your words.

But I don't understand what that soundbite actually means. If women already understand how they are 'impacted' by their period - eg, PMT before, cramps and weird bowel stuff during, spots around ovulation - then they understand it. So what's with the not being 'in touch with their feelings & symptoms in the other phases of their cycle.' Does she think she's just discovered PMT?

puffyisgood · 16/03/2022 11:55

they seem like quite a small company, a slip on their part I daresay.

plenty of their other posts, if a little odd, use the w word in a clearly biological sense, e.g.

everyone who experiences a monthly cycle.

Nooo just say it. Women and girls.

Women and girls who menstruate if you must

Use plain English.

DameHelena · 16/03/2022 11:49

everyone who experiences a monthly cycle.
No, fuck that. We'e talking about periods (I believe there is some evidence that men have hormonal cycles too, although they're obviously different from menstruation).

It's really simple.
It's WOMEN AND GIRLS.
Oh, and if you're a woman or girl who doesn't have periods, you can easily infer that this ad isn't talking to you. And you probably won't be offended by it.

VelvetChairGirl · 16/03/2022 11:23

@PriamFarrl

Oh dear.

People who have periods, or, women and other people who menstruate, or, everyone who experiences a monthly cycle, any of those would be inclusive rather than insulting.
I’m in a group online who is very inclusive and a few days ago someone wanted to ask a question about washable sanitary towels. So they targeted their question at ‘members who have periods’. Fine.
I have no problem at all that not everyone who has periods identifies as a woman.
I also understand that not everyone who identifies as a woman has periods. I’m a woman and I’ve not had a period in years.

But, no one refers to themselves as a bleeder.

everyone who experiences a monthly cycle.

See I like that, its very respectful and it took you five seconds to think of it, wtf is going on in their heads that they thought bleeders was fine, subconscious misogyny or just plan trolling.

Can I just say, that Imodium should be marketed to squitters Grin

To be fair I think the post is taken out of context. Look at the rest of the posts on the Instagram page and they seem to be a very women friendly and empowering company. When you look at it in the context of the rest of their brand, I genuinely don't think she was meaning anything other than women who have periods as appose to women who don't have periods (menopause/contraception.. lots of women aren't actual 'bleeders') . This is a classic example of why you shouldn't pile on without looking a bit closer first.
Even more unfortunate that they’ve decided to use this horrific wording in their campaign then
DameHelena · 16/03/2022 08:49

@Onionpatch

Not keen on bleeder! If i wanted to be super inclusive i would go with 'people who menstruate'.
'women and girls' does the job just as well and with no going round the houses.
DameHelena · 16/03/2022 08:48

I’m Talking to YOU, Pissers, brought to you by TenaLady
I'd actually buy a product marketed with that strapline Grin

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 15/03/2022 23:46

@SpaceshiptoMars

Bleeders. Mmmh. From the same stable as 'breeders', I guess.
When the usage of "people who menstruate/menstruators" first came to my attention, I used to explain that I found calling women menstruators just a polysyllabic version of calling women "breeders and bleeders".

Now they're not even disguising it. It's actually bleeders now.

It’s bizarre what’s wrong with the words women girls.

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2022 22:26

@littlbrowndog

Just looked at their site

Never once uses word women.

Jeez what’s so wrong with the word women

Are they trying to get the word women erased so younger girls and women will just accept that it’s ok not to mention girls and women

Horrendous isn’t it

Such a fundamental issue

“Bleeder” is both inaccurate (as a PP mentioned, menstruation involves shedding the uterine lining) & - as heavily emphasised both here & on IG - an insult (though Collins don’t make space there for discussing regional & temporal variations in usage & meaning). It’s an insult in & of itself to do a product launch without checking something as simple as that.

The company website is all about those menstruating people. Even though the CEO seems to know what women are in this interview. Oh & this one from last year is full of women & females too.

Everyone bleeds. It is an absurd word to use. (BTW, Tampons are also handy for gunshot wounds as well as nosebleeds.) Not just everyone - it’s literally dehumanising: animals & insects bleed.

Back, yet again, to the simple fact of nonsense words excluding vulnerable women: if you think it’s about first aid supplies, you ignore it because it’s not for you.

You can’t be women-friendly if you won’t name women. You can’t empower women (though I’m not entirely clear what form this empowering was meant to be taking) if you won’t name them.

It’s a feeble excuse “oh, the person selling period products thought they should use a derogatory term for their target audience to specify they meant their target audience”. Women are quite capable of looking at an advert for period products & not feeling mortally wounded there wasn’t a special line drawn to announce exactly WHICH women were being invited to look at it. Unless you are unwell, you are not a “bleeder” for the majority of the portion of your life where you menstruate.

If an individual is unable to cope with being reminded that periods are a sex-linked and inherently female thing, they need therapy to help reconcile themselves to this fact. You know, much as the consensus is to provide therapy for anorexics who starve themselves because developing breasts & getting their period is so unbearable to them.

thenewduchessoflapland · 15/03/2022 21:59

Bleeders?;where I grew up bleeders was a nickname for a group of two or more of troublesome people "those bleeders were out causing trouble again last night"

This advert makes me howl.

its still an insult and a swear word.
EvilKinevil · 15/03/2022 20:42

I actually feel quite sad. My daughter was asking me about pads after seeing “Turning Red” and I thought it might be time to have the chat. I don’t want her to be in a world where she’s referred to as a “bleeder”, and seeing that written about her, when she has her first period. Horrible.

Modern times, and yet more idiotic stuff still being written.
