Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Sir Bernard Jenkins standing up for women on IWD - and a bunch of female MPs failing to.

This has just popped up on my youtube feed. It is Sir Bernard Jenkin, in the commons on the International Women's Day debate, pushing back against self ID and advocating for women's need for single sex space. Anneliese Dodds has a beef with him when he refers to her performance the other day. Once again, the betrayal of women by several female MPs astonishes and depresses me. Thank you, Sir Bernard.

@donquixotedelamancha

Here's round 2 between Jenkin and Dodds. Jenkin reading out the transcript from Woman's Hour.

In fairness, she did say in that clip that a woman is an adult female, she just skipped over it really quickly.

But in the Woman's Hour segment, she actually said (If I heard her correctly - I made a note)

'Well, I have to say there are different definitions legally around what a woman actually is. If you look at the definition in within the EA and I think it just says someone who is adult and female, I think but then doesn't say how you define either of those things'

So she might be clear in her mind that she said adult and female (she did, by saying that definition was in the EA) but she certainly wasn't clear giving HER OWN DEFINITION and also implied that even with adult and female it was difficult because there weren't definitions of those two words.

Weasel words!

"I am a woman, obviously" what do you think is so obvious, Anneliese Confused

Stroppypants · 10/03/2022 20:02

Do you think it’s partly because women in these positions could be sacked, cancelled, trolled, etc if they are in anyway gender critical and disagree with trans ideology? I’m not making excuses by the way but men don’t seem to face the same scrutiny and vitriol.

unsync · 10/03/2022 19:46

Baroness Jenkin also speaks for Women's rights when sitting in the Lords.

Goatsaregreat · 10/03/2022 19:25

Thank you for all the links ATeamArmy. Thais debate is being had no matter what the men say.

Goatsaregreat · 10/03/2022 19:24

Progress is being made - if Dodds is huffing and puffing to insist that she did say a woman is an adult human female then that's making progress after idiot Starmer's instructions that nobody should say only women have a cervix.

Ah, yes, and sort of dismissed it in the same breath, no?

@Solosunrise

How much less likely is a man to be cancelled for speaking up though, do we think?
Anne Jenkin, his wife, has written about it too in the Telegraph.

Nigel evans was found not guilty, and one of the alleged victims in the case actually said he shouldn't have been charged.

I accept he was found not guilty of that rape but other alledged victims of prior alledged assaults have not felt able to go to court. He's my MP and an aquaintence through a couple of different groups of friends. I'm not a fan.

ATeamAmy · 10/03/2022 18:38

The question was, "What is Labour's definition?" She couldn't give it and waffled. She's now trying to claim she gave a definitive answer when she did not. The entire exchange needs to be read. Why should the word and concept of "woman" require an analysis and knowledge of different legislation and different contexts, when it has a common definition that is understood by the vast majority of human beings, not to mention, 6 million years of human experience?

The racist expenses cheat Bernard Jenkin? Keeping it classy there guys!

He used the word coloured nearly 20 years ago. I think saying that makes him a racist now devalues the term.

I don't generally like his politics either but that doesn't mean I'm not happy he's raising an important issue on IWD. Is there something about his actual argument you didn't like @LizDoingTheCanCan?

Bernard Jenkin said 400 and something! No-one disputed it in the debate. Dear god.
Thank you. I’d like to say I’m shocked by such a high number but sadly I’m not.

Sorry, that's an answer to how many 'women' rapists.

@Monitaurus

Wow. He has it , even if most of the labour women don’t . Thank you for spelling it out so clearly. Did the labour MP concerned explain her definition later? Hearing the number of rapists identifying as women is really important, but very scary. ( goes off to search for later footage)
How many are there?

'I think that trans-activism is a new form of misogyny' says Danny Kruger MP in the House of Commons debate. Good quote.

Dodds saying, "I am a woman, obviously!" How does she know?

Agreeing with someone on one issue doesn't mean you agree with them on every issue. Why is something so basic not clear to you, did you not finish primary school? Also, what do you mean by 'classy'? Are women supposed to care more about how 'classy' they look than defending their basic human rights in your eyes? So women are supposed to obey to whatever randomers define as 'classy' rather than giving the issues at hand any thought (which is clearly the case for some of the women in this clip). You sound like you have a very misogynistic view of women.
