Shame on Greta Thunberg! Literally removing women from International Women's Day! How about "WOMEN are still being oppressed...for their SEX"?

Yep, gender conforming is a tool of the patriarchy but in my experience it was the girls that got more wound up about it.

I got to get the worst of both worlds from boys and girls - guess that makes me good at multitasking.

Mind you, labels have their places but they don't define everything. They are useful - I do feel better since my AS diagnosis at 37.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 10/03/2022 19:06

Demi-sexuality is somewhat midway on the pansexual-asexual spectrum in that a demi-sexual person can be content without sex but is also happy to have sex with a sexual partner

Thats described the vast majority of my female friends

JaninaDuszejko · 10/03/2022 18:58

I do think it is easy to fret over details than the still massive issue of sex-based violence, gender-based violence and the maginalization of women

So marginalised that a famous young woman cannot even bring herself to use the word 'woman' on International Woman's Day.

I'd also love to know what you consider 'non-gender conforming behaviours'. Because we all know gender is just a tool of the patriarchy to keep women in their place. I suspect none of the gender critical feminists on here are gender conforming but that doesn't change the fact that we are adult human females.

KittenKong · 10/03/2022 18:57

It’s all the same thing. Just people desperate to find a shiny new label for themselves.

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 10/03/2022 18:52

It's more about romantic/sexual attraction to people irrespective of sex or gender and is inclusive of intersex/non-binary people.
Demi-sexuality is somewhat midway on the pansexual-asexual spectrum in that a demi-sexual person can be content without sex but is also happy to have sex with a sexual partner. It took me a long time to realise that demisexuality is a thing.

KittenKong · 10/03/2022 18:45

Bisexual in old money.

Clymene · 10/03/2022 18:42

What is the pansexual - asexual spectrum?

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 10/03/2022 18:39

While it is important to have some international standards on terminology - like not mistaking sex for gender I do think it is easy to fret over details than the still massive issue of sex-based violence, gender-based violence and the maginalization of women, non-binary and non-gender conforming people worldwide.

It is worth noticing that autistic people are significantly more likely to be on the pansexual-asexual spectrum and to have non-gender conforming behviours than NT people.

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 10/03/2022 18:36

Thing is, young activists do listen to the elders that actually make the attempt to engage with them rather than the presupposition that 'I am right and you are wrong.'

Do not assume that simply having not died yet automatically grants wisdom and knowledge if they haven't ever actively sought it or learn from it.

She supports what transgender people and their allies, including me, consider to be transgender rights, not what gender critical people think transgender rights are. .

I don't insist you discuss women's rights without including men. I can't answer why I do something that I don't do.[/quote]
Yet here you are, telling us that your perspective is better than, more correct than any here. And ignoring the obvious. Making your own daft statements based on bugger all actual knowledge.

Every post that includes even the slightest hint of TWAW, trans rights are soemthingmore than human rights, have something missing, are being abused is centering men... on a site that is predominantly used by women. On a specific fora that is about WOMENS RIGHTS

And you can't answer that question because you would then be forced to confront your own biases and illogic!

MangyInseam · 09/03/2022 23:02

@PurpleParrotfish

Those who think Greta is a puppet and should sit down and shut up, do you think the same about all young climate campaigners? Sit down, shut up and leave it to the adults who have failed to listen to climate scientists for decades which is why we’re in the shit. Greta and the other young activists might not be right about everything but they’ve got good reason to be angry. If you don’t want to be patronised and dismissed yourself, don’t dish it out to others.
I don't know about sit down and shut up, but I think that there are a lot of young activists who need to start to listen to their elders and gain some understanding of the problem. And stop accusing them of "ruining" the planet which is just incredibly naive and inaccurate, and a way of avoiding their own responsibility in the end.
Floisme · 09/03/2022 22:28

I have no issue with young people campaigning. I have an issue with a movement - however righteous their cause might be - using a child as a figurehead. I think it was wrong and it has diminished them in my eyes.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 09/03/2022 20:25

You got all that from a hat and a trite platitude?

Clymene · 09/03/2022 20:07

The issue is that she said people. Not women but people. Swedish has very different words for men, women and people. It's not an oversight, it's not a linguistic anomaly, it's a choice.

SoManyQuestionsHere · 09/03/2022 20:00

Oh, cut her some slack, will you?

She's Swedish, and (obligatory "I am not an expert on the linguistics of North Germanic languages here) from what I understand, her native tongue doesn't clearly distinguish between sex and gender.

And, for the record: ours happens to be the standard in global academia, and we still use "gender" to mean both "external expectations, roles" as well as "internal self-image, identity", too, and we manage to cause a great deal of confusion over whichever one we happen to be referring to at any given moment.

I don't think it's particularly feminist to criticise a young, female leader for failing to properly define her terminology upon posting on IWD. And on Twitter, of all places!

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 09/03/2022 19:48

Maybe you should hop over to the Neurodiverse MN board - we're a friendly bunch and you might learn something new. Be respectful, no shitposting and remember:

No about without

No it's not a women only forum. More's the pity. I spend my working days listening to mediocre men bleating their opinions; it's a shame it happens on Mumsnet too but I'm well aware that men are very uncomfortable with women only spaces.

HellonHeels · 09/03/2022 17:49

@AnneLovesGilbert

Most if not all languages have words for men and women. Not sure why people are fixating on whether or not she’s confusing gender and sex. Women are oppressed, women, not people.

And thankfully there are many women to be celebrated who are fighting for the rights of women and girls, so i disagree with her message on that basis too.

This!
Floisme · 09/03/2022 17:49

@Floisme That is something some of us have been saying here since Greta first appeared, isn't it?
I think it was probably through this board that I read an article by Meghan Murphy that articulated it for me. Up until then I'd felt uneasy without really knowing why.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 09/03/2022 17:47

But I think it's a fair bet that considering the day she chose to wear it, along with her age and political views, she is saying that she thinks transwomen should be part of IWD

Wouldn’t argue with this at all

But its not my point

Lots of people have very different ideas about rights …dad said that greta has a different idea about trans rights compared to GC people

She may well believe that transwomen should be in toilets and changing rooms but not female prisons for example…how do we know what people mean by trans rights if no one explains what they mean

I certainly have some different views from other fwr posters

DadJoke · 09/03/2022 17:44

@Clymene as I understand it, this is not a women-only forum and I'm not insisting on posting.

MangyInseam · 09/03/2022 17:41

@RufustheFloralmissingreindeer

How do you know what greta supports?

Anyone can wear a hat

Admittedly I sometimes wear a bass pro shop hat that belongs to my daughter even though I have no interest in fishing.

But I think it's a fair bet that considering the day she chose to wear it, along with her age and political views, she is saying that she thinks transwomen should be part of IWD.
