Woman's Hour on IWD - what is a woman?

This question has just come up in a discussion between Emma Barnett and Anneliese Dodds, Shadow Women and Equalities minister.

EB is wonderfully direct and unapologetic. AD ties herself in stuttering knots and ends up sounding extremely foolish.

Worth a listen (if you go onto BBC sounds in the next hour I think you'll be able to scroll back to around 10.24ish?) and worth putting in the WH archive of making up ground in fulfilling their remit.

Bloody hell. What the fuck is going on in this world that we need 5 minutes of waffling and still have NO idea what the definition of a woman is! Love EB.

I don't like this world anymore!

MaMaLa321 · 09/03/2022 09:44

apparently Yvette Cooper refused to answer to question on Times Radio this morning, because it would mean 'going down a rabbit hole'.

@tanstaafl

I can hear Aretha singing it now: 'you make me feel like a natural context-dependent cervix-haver GrinGrin
There was a fabulous Twitter thread a while back rewording a lot of classic songs.

"When a jizzer loves a bleeder" was my favourite, but there were many others.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 09/03/2022 09:30

That's really stupid. I'm not going to pussyfoot around here, it really is. Dodds knows what a woman is and if she was asked to point out the woman in any situation she would have no problem. Or maybe she's so caught in the weird ideology she actually would stand there hand-wringing about context if she was told eg 'the woman will give you £5 million if you go up to her,' who knows?

TheMarzipanDildo I take on board your comment that she might be scared but surely she'd be more scared of looking like a total jaw-dropping plonker who was so dim she didn't even know what a woman was. In some ways, that takes more courage than saying adult human female. Not good, useful courage mind you 😉

I hate BJ and the conservative party with a passion. I want to support Labour.

Bur the Conservative MP in a neighbouring town clearly is expressing concerns about women's rights with regards to.this issue.

I am so frustrated that Labour cannot see that this issue is important to their core electorate.

Just listened to this. I think Dodds is ‘on our side’ but fucking terrified (which is fairish I suppose, but I think you’ve got to be braver if you’re a politician).
All that fence sitting must be painful!

And it's made the Spectator www.spectator.co.uk/article/labour-flounders-to-define-the-word-woman-

The question is asked at 10.22 and was asked by a listener. EB made it clear that several listeners had asked the same thing.

I love EB.
Binglebong · 08/03/2022 21:24

Well the context can't be female type biology since "men can get pregnant too". And it can't be appearence based since requiring someone to present as female is transphobic (and stupid - females can look however they look but personally if I was bald, bearded and clearly male I'd struggle to keep a straight face as I said I was female).

I think it must be down to the feelz.

littlbrowndog · 08/03/2022 21:24

Omg. What a frightened weasel woman

She’s gets paid to too frightened to say what a woman

Spineless

Earn your money woman and do your job. Stop being frightened. Set an an example to women and girls with your power to be heard

hallouminatus · 08/03/2022 13:59

AD also inadvertently said that the definition of women in the EA is someone who is adult and female

I don't think that's right. Doesn't the EA actually use "woman" to mean "a female of any age"? So explicitly not limited to adults (though it is perhaps implicitly limited to humans).

ZuttZeVootEeeVo · 08/03/2022 13:31

@DomesticatedZombie

Happy International Context-Dependent Day, everyone!
Thank you!

I'm wondering in what context AD and, I assume, the whole of the labour party don't think I'm a woman.

DomesticatedZombie · 08/03/2022 13:27

Look, politicians: Women aren't stupid. We're not going anywhere. We will remain women and we will continute to raise this issue until you face it and deal with it. And if you don't - well - don't respect my sex, don't expect my x, as the saying goes.

Itwasntmeright · 08/03/2022 13:27

Oh gosh, she was awful. She used to be my MP, and I can confirm the letters I received from her were equally as pointless. Honestly if you can’t explain things in such a way that you can back up, and that everyone can understand, just don’t go there. I couldn’t imagine making such a colossal idiot of myself in private, let alone on national radio.

Liveasusual · 08/03/2022 13:22

Huh, I met her canvassing for the last GE. She wanted to talk about schools (was o/s a school). I told her I'd vote for any candidate who could define a woman. Ended up talking about having a DD and how if she wanted to play rugby or go on a school residential, I wanted to be able to support her enthusiastically rather than worrying about whether a male-bodied peer might be on the pitch or in the dorm. She was human, down to earth and faintly surprised that it was being raised.

So she has bugger all excuse for not being prepared for it being raised on WH, on IWD, after 3 more years experience of why this bloody matters to us as women.

NancyDrawed · 08/03/2022 13:16

AD also inadvertently said that the definition of women in the EA is someone who is adult and female and you could almost hear her the quiver of terror in her voice as she realised that's transphobic hate speech

But then somewhat spoiled that by saying 'but then it doesn't say how you define either of those things'.

Yes, 'adult' is so very difficult to define. And female? Virtually impossible.

Enough4me · 08/03/2022 13:12

There are unfortunately two contexts, the real world context and the I'm-scared-of-TRAs context.

At home with friends and family I carry on as normal. At work I don't know who works for the thought-police, and we all play the ideology game. If I didn't need my job for my mortgage, children and older family to care for (things that can be attacked) I would be honest all the time.

DomesticatedZombie · 08/03/2022 13:02

wouldn't say twaw?

Shock

That won't go down well.

DomesticatedZombie · 08/03/2022 13:01

Happy International Context-Dependent Day, everyone!

DomesticatedZombie · 08/03/2022 13:00

@nauticant

Apparently the answer to "what is a woman?" is "context-dependent".

Dodds came across as someone trying to mislead but bungling it.

I can hear Aretha singing it now: 'you make me feel like a natural context-dependent cervix-haver'.
Lottapianos · 08/03/2022 12:57

'AD also inadvertently said that the definition of women in the EA is someone who is adult and female and you could almost hear her the quiver of terror in her voice as she realised that's transphobic hate speech.'

Yep. Absolutely pathetic. And the pleading about 'context' - 'surely Emma, SURELY?......' 🙄

Do they realise that they sound like absolute crackpots?

TheWeeDonkey · 08/03/2022 12:52

The meaning of woman is " context dependent " ?

Twas ever thus

StillWeRise · 08/03/2022 12:47

....however, what she did not say was TWAW, so that is progress
