Feeling Very Disturbed

Name changed as outing.
I've just posted on my medical profession's closed FB group in support of an OP questioning the appropriateness of our professional body being a member of SW diversity scheme.
Cue pile-on by many talking all the usual talk - TWAW etc.
Thread deleted by admin as they agreed with reporters.
I'm really rattled - these are scientists denying scientific reality.
Just having a vent, really.

@LaChanticleer

Crikey, they are medicos? God help an actual transwomen or transmen who seek treatment for the side effects of all the messing about with their bodies. "oh no, that can't be happening - you're an actual woman [or man], donchaknow?"
Trans women being women ≠ trans women being the same as cis women.

Not everyone subscribes to your bioessentialist definition of "woman".

Enough4me · 01/03/2022 15:35

You would think vets, who I assume know how to sex animals at or shortly after birth, would know sex is binary. Imagine sticking an appendage on a female dog and assuming it would be fine with it's brothers...call it Dave as well (pronouns he/him).

TheCurrywurstPrion · 01/03/2022 15:34

I’m also a vet. Clearly there are quite a few of us!

WarriorN · 01/03/2022 15:33

@DomesticatedZombie

All of the HCPs I know in real life are - well, either gc or just Not Buying It for a minute.

Same here. I know a few.

A pharmacist I know though who works in a hospital said some younger hcps (didnt specify who) very rather captured.

Branwenosaurus · 01/03/2022 15:22

Was the post on VV? Anyone on Vetsurgeon as there's another post about Stonewall on there? I've just done a long reply to that (with references!) and expecting to get flack.
Also a vet

VenezuelaChant · 01/03/2022 13:50

The loudest speak over others in their rush to assert their piety. I imagine many lurkers in the group feel similarly to you, OP.

Twaw is also an idea trumpeted by the comfortable, oppression-seeking middle-classes, who are traditionally encouraged into (vet)med, so it's not entirely a wonder that it has its support.

LaChanticleer · 01/03/2022 13:37

Might it be worth someone (not necessarily you) pointing out the LGBAlliance came in to existence because more and more LGB people feel that Stonewall discriminates against them and is actively homophobic.

Including Simon Fanshawe, who was one of the founders of Stonewall. He's a bit of a hero of mine.

ScrollingLeaves · 28/02/2022 21:59

OP this is a paper about the importance of language related to sex, as it has an impact on health outcomes.

It is brilliantly written by HCPs. It is also nuanced and respectful.

Perhaps the people who shut you down might listen to this?

@Pluvia

OP, some of the worst be-kind, TWAW people I know are doctors. And not young doctors, people at consultant level. I've had a Head of Paediatrics arguing with me that sex is a spectrum! Same with very experienced, top-of-scale clinical psychologists and a psychiatrist I know. I have a suspicion that several of them are ASD: a couple of them actually talk about being autistic. They seem to be so clever that they can be persuaded to accept anything as true.
I think sometimes they are so used to accepting "best practice" kinds of recommendations, that they end up being quite vulnerable to medical fads. And medical fads are not at all unusual.

I know a GP who, about 10 years ago, was asked to take on a young transitioning female patient who did not have a regular GP. - probably really on the first wave of the current wave of younger women transitioners. She was told that aside from normal health care she would just be looking at dealing with prescriptions, making sure things were in order for tests or referrals, as far as the medical transition went - pretty regular stuff. All the psychological assessments etc were in order.

She agreed and things seemed fine, until a few years later when this poor person just started to fall apart, from all of the underlying issues that, it turned out, had never been addressed by the therapists.

Now, this GP was and is a person who is reasonable skeptical about medical fads, but this was an area she wasn't expert in and hadn't had much reason to get into the nitty gritty. When it went bad she was really upset that things had not been as thorough as she'd been led to believe.

Waves *@WaltzingBetty* *@Sledgingdown* Yes the libdem aspect is especially depressing as that’s been my natural vote for the last 35 years.
Yes I'm politically homeless now too. And there are many things about that FB group that frustrate me

You are absolutely in touch with reality, they are the ones who are out of touch.

FeelingVeryDisturbed · 28/02/2022 19:55

No debate within my evidence based data insistent peer group.
Maybe some lurkers though Wink

Sledgingdown · 28/02/2022 19:51

Really frustrating, but not unsurprising if it’s main moderator is Libdem. (Assuming I’ve guessed the right page) I’ve seen similar on another vet site and just had to keep my head down and say nothing.

WaltzingBetty · 28/02/2022 19:48

@FeelingVeryDisturbed

You aren't alone. I saw the same post briefly.
Afraid I'm not brave enough to raise my head Sad I think there are likely plenty more like us.
Can't believe the RCVS are still paying SW.
As a profession we bang on about EBVM, but it seems that's not implemented in practice and can't even be rationally discussed.
You aren't out of touch and your age isn't related to your views.

BlancheB · 28/02/2022 19:43

I truly think people just see 'Stonewall' and think that equals being fair and accepting of others so anyone questioning membership gets instantly shut down. Sad

Unless they've done some background reading into it, most can't see through their agenda.

WinterTrees · 28/02/2022 19:38

In a way it's even more baffling coming from vets. Do they also believe trans ewes are ewes? Trans bulls are bulls? If a dog called Lulu was brought in wearing a pink diamanté collar would they treat it as specifically female, regardless of its genetalia? If not, why not?

Sexnotgender · 28/02/2022 19:38

I’d be disturbed too. Vets? Fuck sake.

JellySaurus · 28/02/2022 19:36

Do they support other Queer identitarians? Are Furries animals?

Leafstamp · 28/02/2022 19:19

I'd be disturbed too. Tbh I am permanently disturbed to some extent by all of this.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/02/2022 19:16

Ah. I hope, but sadly I don't feel confident enough to expect, that HCPs who deal with humans may have seen the problems in some of their patients and started thinking harder about it all.

Not too many gender issues in farm animals and pets, I assume!
