Oh that is funny. GL doesn't want to debate, because let's face it, they'll look really stupid, so the answer is to get banned from twitter and then pretend they're pulling out because otherwise it will make the 'community' sad.

Yeah right. That's pretty cringe. Embarrassed for you GL.

Crouton19 · 21/02/2022 20:07

Argh I am pretty fluffed off about this cancellation actually and had hoped that for once - FOR ONCE - someone might talk through things in good faith and find some common ground, whether third spaces or relinquishing of certain words but support of better health care and medical research on long term mental and physical health. I hope the MPs discussing GRA reform today can see what has happened and how we have TRIED to discuss the issues reasonably but the other side won’t even meet halfway.

Thank you to Helen and UnHerd for trying, anyway.

Anyone getting ticket refunds, Keep Prisons Single Sex need some carrots 🥕 before tomorrow.

MondayYogurt · 21/02/2022 19:50

Well I just searched twitter for "I hope the queen dies" and sigh

Mollyollydolly · 21/02/2022 19:20

I bloody love Helen. Class Act. God Save the Queen.

allmywhat · 21/02/2022 19:17

This was inevitable really, but I’d hoped that the posturing nincompoop would have enough pride, or shame, or whatever it is that generally motivates posturing nincompoops, to stick to nincompoop’s guns. Oh well. At least it’s funny.

supercritter · 21/02/2022 19:14

@Cwenthryth

Oh that’s fucking hilarious. What a prat.

Well I have £15 available now when I (presume) we get our tickets refunded - who is needing any digging doing at the mo?

Transgendertrend are busy atm

Well, I would apologise for posting this thread because the withdrawal by GL was inevitable, though optimistically I dared to hope.

However, your posts have been wonderful and I'm guessing GL has totally overstepped the mark and either twitter or GL or both were threatened with court action. Nice

@Cwenthryth - I'm letting UnHerd keep my £15, it can go toward the fee for their next GC article

DomesticatedZombie · 21/02/2022 18:55

No Debate is not dead. Long live No Debate.

EsmaCannonball · 21/02/2022 18:47

How Rik is that statement? I can't believe the state of academia. It's turning me into one of those people who thinks everything but the science-y subjects should be abolished.

The only thing that could make this more perfect would be the queen coming out as King Elton Testostobollocks I of the Rainbow People and starting the mother of all Twitter-spats with Lavery for wishing death on a marginalised, oppressed senior.

Mollyollydolly · 21/02/2022 18:37

One of the worst humans on the Planet. I'm glad Helen doesn't have to breathe the same air while she handed him their arse.

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 21/02/2022 18:35

It’s simultaneously frustrating and strangely satisfying

Lavery has proven both himself and the ideology to be exactly as I thought

@WeeBisom

So this whole thing started because Lavery said 'no debate' wasn't even a real thing. And it ended up proving that 'no debate' is, in fact, standard operating procedure for trans rights activists. What an own goal.
Exactly! The genesis was a Twitter spat in which feminists bemoaned that no prominent transactivist will ever debate the clash of trans rights and womens rights with us. And yes, even if you think that there is no clash, it’s still entirely legitimate to take part in a debate in order to explain why. Lavery stepped up to disprove that once and for all by debating Helen Joyce, in order to own all those terrible lying t*rfs and prove that it’s possible to openly debate like adults. Lavery positioned themselves as the champion, to fly the flag and change the conversation.

Only…it’s still not, because goddam it, Helen cutted up the pear!

Sophoclesthefox · 21/02/2022 18:28

What community of people is that, then?

The community of people who’ve shit themselves at the prospect of Helen Joyce wiping the floor with them? Grin

I keep muttering “shat it”, from upthread and snorfling.

Least surprising plot twist evah.

FatherBuzzCagney · 21/02/2022 18:22

I'm fascinated by academics having temper tantrums on twitter. It's the opposite of what I thought academia was about.

I'm guessing you haven't spent much time around academics Grin

I've seen (male, obvs) colleagues nearly come to blows over the wording of an exam question. There is no petty depth to which many academics can't sink, particularly the older, more senior, male ones.

SpiderVersed · 21/02/2022 18:13

That statement is hilarious. And we all called it.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 21/02/2022 18:11

I came here after reading about both delicious developments over on the Farms to see if you were up to speed. Laugh? I nearly wet myself.

I wonder if HMG will allow him back in after that truly tasteless comment about her maj. I do hope so

Phobiaphobic · 21/02/2022 18:08

I can't stop laughing at that withdrawal tantrum.

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 21/02/2022 18:03

@Olderbadger1

Perfect from Helen. The comparison is striking. How the hell do these people manage to hold down jobs (or get appointed in the first place)? And how the hell do they get to be considered as experts in any shape or form? Beggars belief.
I had a visit to the U of Michigan many years ago and saw how junior lecturers and hourly-paid lecturers were called 'Professors'.
WinterTrees · 21/02/2022 18:01

'Comrades and siblings expressed profound grief and concern at the prospect of my enriching a fascist platform...'

HAHAHAHA 😂😂😂

Theeyeballsinthesky · 21/02/2022 17:56

Loooooi but of course they have!!

“I want a debate!”
HJ I’ll debate You
“Not like that!!”
