www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10520757/Biden-taps-non-binary-drag-queen-look-nuclear-waste.html

"Brinton has been unapologetic about LGBTQ+ rights, and has a history of promoting sexual fetishes and kinks related to animal role-playing. They gave a talk on 'kink exploration' at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2017. Brinton talked about their own experiences with 'pup play,' domination and how to safely choke one's partner.

They told of one experience how they like to tie up his partner like a table and eat dinner on him while they watch Star Trek. "

Yeah, the world is down the pan.
Is it even worth fighting anymore?
Of course it is, I just keep thinking I've peaked and then I read a story like this.

I'm sure that there have always been people with odd fetishes, but the idea that it's somehow a good thing to let everyone know about them is disturbing. Your employer shouldn't know about your sexual interests. Nor should a newspaper. Keep it private.

And before the homophobic comparisons roll in, mentioning your same-sex partner at work is nothing at all like revealing that you like to tie people up and wear a dog mask or whatever else this is. Far too much information.

I'd consider him unsuitable for the job for that reason. No sense of appropriate boundaries.

Mummyoflittledragon · 19/02/2022 11:31

There was a poster on a recent thread, who said she’d alerted management that a woman the company was intending to recruit used to be a cam girl. The job was not offered to her due to this behaviour not being in line with corporate image.

The questions as to whether a woman with equally star credentials would have been recruited to this position if they behaved and dressed in a similar way are very pertinent.

ScreamingMeMe · 17/02/2022 19:28

Who has said he should be sacked? Nobody on this thread.

namitynamechange · 17/02/2022 16:40

@ScholesPanda

I'd probably be concerned if this individual took that involved safeguarding (like teaching), and I think that they should be held to the same professional standards (such as dress) as anyone else. Other than that I don't care. I'm also really suspicious of efforts to get people sacked because of things they've said or done that don't effect their ability to do the job, I don't think the sacking by Twitter mob mentality is advancing society TBH.
You put what I wanted to say into better words than I could. I guess also at least it isn't a security risk in this case either since its all out there. (Although how ARE foreign intelligence agencies going to blackmail people these days when all the stuff that would be kompromat has already been the subject of university lectures/Ted talks?)

Well, seeing as they have Master's degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a professional interest in sorting nuclear waste problem, sounds like they're pretty well qualified for the job and good luck to them.

BigFrau · 17/02/2022 12:56

@Frenchfancy

I think your title is misleading TBH. Yes it is disturbing, but this is a UK site and this person is not part of the UK government.
Yeah, cos that's the thing to focus on in all this, obviously...
Artichokeleaves · 17/02/2022 12:52

My problem is why the rules are different for this person, as opposed say, to a woman who tuned up looking like that in a high profile government role. Would the same courtesies be extended to her?

This is a good point.

Women have for a long time fought (mostly unsuccessfully) to stop their main public focus by journalists being their appearance, clothes, price of clothes, weight, baby weight, how fast they lose the baby weight, yada yada, instead of focus on the capacity to do their job.

Now we're seeing males march into the public eye waving their exciting sex lives in the face of the public with some bizarre belief that it's relevant or of interest.

We're living in the era of Johnson where capacity, boundaries and professionality appears to have gone with the wind, but the difference is stark.

ScrollingLeaves · 17/02/2022 12:46

He came from a religious background and was subjected to cruel conversion therapy.
It is not clear whether that was for being gay, or ‘non binary’ in his gender identity. Now he campaigns against conversion therapy for LGBT people - so the usual conflation.

DoubleYouOhEmAyEn · 17/02/2022 12:31

FFS what consenting adults do together should not be for public consumption. Its private and between the people doing it. Children should not be exposed to news stories about kink. I despair.
We stopped coverage of streakers at public events so as not to cause upset to anyone, yet we will discuss strangulation for sexual pleasure, using nice cozy words to describe, it quite openly in the media.

Imnobody4 · 17/02/2022 11:49

Firstly, looking at the Deep Isolation site - there are no images of him dressed up. So we can't assume he'll necessarily turn up in full on drag.
Secondly if a woman was appointed and then pictures of her in bondage gear were published I wouldn't be calling for her to be sacked or expressing condemnation and outrage.

There's a big difference between working with children or having power over women's rights and welfare like the police or the Head of Health that Biden appointed and this job.

I despise his promotion of kink etc but either we believe in free speech or we don't. I'm quite happy to criticise him for all this but it doesn't mean he shouldn't have the job.

Like I said we should judge him by how he behaves at work, and how well he does the job. I just feel that article is a tacky hit job. I'm just trying to reconcile my gut reaction with a more considered position.

Pluvia · 17/02/2022 11:45

I think the point is how comfortable men like this feel in advertising their fetishes

Indeed. I can remember, as a manager, being asked by the male management to have a talk about appropriate office wear when one of my female staff wore extremely high-heeled lace-up-the-front boots, fishnets and corset-style tops to the office.

I support men to wear whatever they want, but that doesn't include inappropriate workwear. My guess is that if a woman presented in that way she wouldn't be taken seriously.

ScrollingLeaves · 17/02/2022 11:36

@YetAnotherSpartacus
“would Biden have employed a woman who had a similar personal life - for example - who may have been a sex worker of a cam model? Or are women still subject to different rules?

  • would a woman in the role feel free to dress similarly or would she be reminded of the rules of female dress and 'decorum' if she wore any of those outfits - or called offensive names? In other words - a different take on rules.
  • what advantages over women because of birth sex does Brinton have? Is Brinton still a welcome member of the boys' club?
  • will Brinton be reminded to keep his professional life separate from his kink life - i.e. - not use the former to promote the latter?”

I agree with what you say here.

RVN123 · 17/02/2022 11:32

This is not addressed to anyone in particular, just clarifying.
Also, I do realise that they may have qualifications that make them suitable for the job.
My problem is why the rules are different for this person, as opposed say, to a woman who tuned up looking like that in a high profile government role. Would the same courtesies be extended to her?

Would you be happy with your kids school teacher turning up like this to teach you child? Blatantly open about their 'kinks' and such?

If its okay to celebrate this in people who are supposed to be running a government, it's just a matter of time before we will be expected to condone it in other spheres of life. If "ability to do the job" is all that matters then great.
But I don't think that IS all that matters.

Well, I do know that Mumsnet is a UK site but there are international members. I actually didn't say UK government?

Also, what happens across the pond is just a stones throw from happening here, as we have seen all too clearly.

I didn't think we were limited to discussing just what is happening in the UK.

I DO have a problem with him using women's spaces. He doesn't even specifically identify as female ffs.

ScreamingMeMe · 17/02/2022 11:07

I think the point is how comfortable men like this feel in advertising their fetishes.

No, it probably won't affect his ability to do the job (unless he starts partaking in his fetishes at work), but why advertise them to the world? That's just weird, to say the least.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 17/02/2022 11:06

I'm a bit uneasy about this, to be honest. Shouldn't the main scrutiny be on his suitability to do the job

Mostly, I agree.

I think we do need to separate out his personal life from his professional role.

I also don't really have a problem with his dressing up as such.

I do have a problem with his views re the trans debate and I find his sexual kinks problematic.

I guess what I wonder is:

  • would Biden have employed a woman who had a similar personal life - for example - who may have been a sex worker of a cam model? Or are women still subject to different rules?
  • would a woman in the role feel free to dress similarly or would she be reminded of the rules of female dress and 'decorum' if she wore any of those outfits - or called offensive names? In other words - a different take on rules.
  • what advantages over women because of birth sex does Brinton have? Is Brinton still a welcome member of the boys' club?

MingeofDeath · 17/02/2022 11:04

Some men look fabulous in dresses, Brinton isn't one of them.

I'm a bit uneasy about this to be honest. Shouldn't the main scrutiny be on his suitability to do the job. He's working at a start up Deep Isolation finding solutions to dealing with nuclear waste - a big issue.
The test will come in how he behaves in the job and what he may or may not be allowed to get away with.

@ScrollingLeaves

I saw this on Ovarit the other day. It beggars belief.

I wonder if he will be good at his job, if that is what we are supposed to think should be the only thing that matters? Or, was he appointed to make a point?

He does seem to be well qualified.

"Sam Brinton received a dual Master's degree in engineering systems and nuclear science and engineering from MIT. "

lgbtqreligiousarchives.org/profiles/sam-brinton

He looks familiar. I seem to remember a photograph of him at an awards ceremony. I think he got a round of applause for using the women's toilets or something ridiculous.

loislovesstewie · 17/02/2022 10:43

I stopped at 'animal role playing' as I wasn't sure where it was going. No, I lie, it was 'tie up' his partner like a table. Oh wait, it's the whole grubby mess, actually.

Rightsraptor · 17/02/2022 10:31

Rome is burning

I started to read it and thought it meant Sal, Baroness Brinton. The first words up to the comma describe her well enough but then I was Confused?
