I would like to see the statistics on how many eg terrorist attacks were deflected, how many abusive husbands were jailed, how many knives were removed, how many motorists were prosecuted - instead the world today is guided by the attention grabbing negatives on anyone

'Attention grabbing' - What? You mean the abuse of women by police officers?

The deep rooted culture of misogyny - an 'attention grabbing negative'

You ask how many abusive husbands were jailed? Well certainly not the officer who physically assaulted his wife and bragged on whatsapp to another officer how much she loved him after 'giving her a slap' - That abusive husband wasn't jailed. Nor sacked.

Highlighting abuse and misogyny and bullying is not an attention grabbing negative. How you can dismiss it as such, is frankly disgusting.

@Offtobednow

I’m not saying there aren’t some horrifically abusive men in the police, and in no way support them or their actions. However it is not the majority. There will be some departments with a culture of misogyny etc (as is likely in many male dominated industries including law, finance, politics) but saying that all officers abuse women is not true. The police department I’ve most experience of is child protection and safeguarding, and the officers there see the impact of male violence everyday, and they truly want to support women and children.
No-one has said that 'all officers abuse women' (your exact words). Please stop dealing in straw men.

I would summarise my position as 'most officers appear to be at least casual misogynists and far too many are actually abusive'. There is overwhelming evidence for this. If it were not a majority, then the events and conversations I have linked to above would be incapable of happening.

I am pleased you have had good experiences but very, very many people have not.

Those who think she can't take responsibility for everything that goes on....Well, yes and no. Those responsible for appalling behaviour are the individuals who are, and will carry on, behaving like that, because they believe they can.
Dick is responsible for not weeding the wrongdoers out and holding them to account. She gets paid a lot to take that responsibility.

thedancingbear · 11/02/2022 11:23

FFS. How can you dismiss this kind of behaviour as 'a few bad apples'?

thedancingbear · 11/02/2022 11:21

@Offtobednow

There are not a clear majority of met officers abusing women. There are many hard working and considerate men and women working in the Met. Unfortunately the nature of policing will attract some violent or misogynistic men, and the force needs to identify them and push them out of the job. I think Cressida currently is being used to take pressure off Boris. The police officers I know feel it’s a shame that a lesbian woman is being targeted for blame for the actions of some officers, and likely to be replaced by another middle aged white man.

I'm sorry to say it is a majority. Otherwise this kind of behaviour would go challenged. Unfortunately it is endemic. It is cultural and institutional. The evidence doesn't lie.

@Spookytooth

There is a lack of mental health care, social care, support for homeless teens, nothing done by Gov to stem the drug dealing and county lines,

It's like trying to do a job with your hands tied behind your back.

This is true on one hand. But the main thing that has driven Dick out of office is her inability to stop what is a clear majority of met officers, abusing, insulting, belittling, and in some instances, raping and murdering women.

Mental health provision and county lines have precisely fuck all to do with this.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 11/02/2022 09:24

I think The Guardian which can be sensible on same things has it right. It wasn’t so much that there are massive systemic problems it’s that she failed to acknowledge they were systemic. Instead she kept attributing it to a few bad apples rather than the fact the whole barrel was rotten

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/feb/11/cressida-dick-could-not-solve-the-mets-problems-she-could-barely-admit-they-existed

Tbh after the disgraceful behaviour & lies around John Charles de Menezes she should have been nowhere near that job anyway

DomesticatedZombie · 11/02/2022 09:20

And I expect the reason for her getting the push is to do with Boris' parties, rather than any of the many scandalous incidents over the years.

DomesticatedZombie · 11/02/2022 09:05

Any news on who might replace her?

The problem in the Met wasn't this woman. It is violent, misogynistic men. I don't know by what mechanism she was meant to change the fundamental mindset of over 40000 thick-as-mince arseholes.
Well you have a point there. It's clealy a deep rooted, horrible culture that needs action in the form of massive cultural change, which is a LOT of work.
twelly · 11/02/2022 08:34

I don't think her resignation should have been forced by politicians - they have their own agenda. Incidents are investigated independently - yes she is in charge of the met - but is she responsible for every single thing that goes wrong - no. Should every one at the top resign when there is a failure lower down - no, although clearly it depends on their role in any incident.

I think she has been an easy target as she cannot fight back in the same way that Boris Johnson does when there is an issue, she has been very professional in the way she has responded to criticism she can't deflect in the same way politicians can. The rules that govern police forces mean her role is very regulated just as her predecessors, police forces have and will continue to face challenges and issues - they will be the same and their leader will for the most part deal wit them in the same way as the regulations allow. I think she should not have been forced out, however, for her own sanity she might be better off away from this situation where she has been the subject of often unfair criticism to which she is powerless to respond.

OhHolyJesus · 11/02/2022 08:20

I'm another who thinks the replacement won't be any better. They could be worse.

Someone new will come along, probably a man, he or she will blame Dick for all that went before and nothing will change, or even attempt change as it was Dick's fault.

PurpleParrotfish · 11/02/2022 07:40

It’s only been since the recent focus on her that I’ve read about the full extent of the police lies after they killed Jean Charles De Menezes (that he jumped the barrier, that he was wearing a bulky coat, that they shouted warnings). I’m in the ‘she should have resigned 16 years ago’ camp. Also deeply unimpressed by the Met response after Sarah Everard refusing to look at why he wasn’t identified as a clear risk or the well-documented wider problems of misogyny.

FindingMeno · 11/02/2022 07:24

At last.
Won't change any of the deep rot in the Met unfortunately though.

sashagabadon · 11/02/2022 07:24

I don’t think this is a good thing and as usual Khan has overplayed his hand. Just heard someone very critical of him on Today show and she is right.

Sprucewillis · 11/02/2022 07:22

Isn't that how most Damehood's are earned?

PearPickingPorky · 11/02/2022 07:18

A Damehood for services to dreadful men.

It's ridiculous really - should the head of the Barclays bank be fired because some cashier in smalltown nicked some cash. Britain is a sexist, racist country - I'm now sure how much CD is to blame for that .

These are my thoughts.

Would anyone else have done better under the circumstances?

They got rid of Theresa May and replaced her with Boris. Nothing has improved from where I'm sitting and appear to have got a lot lot worse. Confused

I missed the person's name on the BBC report but she was a black woman and said that things were positively starting to change under DC. Unfortunately, the misogny and racism in the Met is deeply ingrained.

I guess Sadiq Khan will want the next candidate to identify as a pineapple to tick all the boxes. The world has gone bloody mad.......

lovelyweathertoday · 11/02/2022 07:11

I think the analogy would be more, should the head of a bank lose their job if multiple branches were shown to be repeatedly covering up corrupt behaviour, and laughing about it.

The problem I have is wondering if there is anyone in the Met who can change the culture.

ScreamingMeMe · 11/02/2022 06:58

@Abhannmor

Dreadful appointment in the first place.How was she not sacked after the Menenzes killing?
Quite.
