Twitter currently ablaze with suggestions that Adele is 'ter*y' for saying 'I love being a woman'.

' ... just the use of the word female with the way it was stressed could be easy misinterpreted.'

This is where we are, people. Have you now or have you ever stressed the word 'female' in a way that could be 'easy misinterpreted'? Because if so, we're going to need to check your thinking.

Although I can’t be a sock, I’ve received no carat recipes or receipts. Do I need to login somewhere?

Stand in front of a mirror and say WOMEN DON’T HAVE PENISES three times very quickly. They’ll appear.

@Ereshkigalangcleg

Not a real story.

Says another random on Twitter.

He might have more than 1000 followers and then whatever he says is an actual fact

Apparently….

It's straight from the right-wing culture wars playbook.

Like bots and socks. Or bots in socks?

Ahhh maybe when our Twitter friend complained that we came here for the carrots and ended up being radicalised he/she/zir/cat meant to write carats, you know the gold kind from the far-right bot farming sock weavers 🤔

'this never happened' 'yes it did, here is evidence' 'those evidences don't count because'

That's about the size of it.

I see the duty MRA has arrived. Is there a rota?

And if you can’t read my attachment, here is the text

“Because they’ve had an unmoderated cess pool called Mumsnet radicalising them for years. Go in looking for how to get your kid to eat more carrots, come out a raging transphobe.”

Well that made me laugh. I've been radicalised to believe exactly what I believed before I joined MN all those years ago. Most of the world believed the same thing back then. Remember those days? People can't change sex. Not even by wearing different clothes and changing your name. Ah, the heady days of being able to state facts without being called a raging transphobe. Before the thought police turned up.

Aha. Now I understand. You're strawfeministing. Iit's not about detecting a "conspiracy". It's about gauging the zeitgeist. Follower numbers aren't the key; the key is how much pushback there is from other people within the community.

DadJoke · 15/02/2022 19:13

I'm suggesting that when you pick a tiny unrepresentative and uninfluential sample of people and suggest their views apply to a supposed vast and powerful conspiracy of others and amplify it to the extent that it ends up in the Mail, there is another agenda. It's straight from the right-wing culture wars playbook.

DomesticatedZombie · 15/02/2022 18:58

I am not understanding the equations either, Purgatory. What on earth difference does it make how many twitter followers anyone has?

The assertion was that trans people were not tweeting that Adele was transphobic; the thread I posted shows many tweets from trans people or 'allies' saying that Adele was transphobic. It's fairly straightforward.

OP posts:
PurgatoryOfPotholes · 15/02/2022 18:51

People with fewer than 1000 followers don't exist?

DadJoke · 15/02/2022 18:42

Harris (16K followers) is reposting a handful of tweets from people whose entire follower base can't be much more than 1000, and it's been weaponised against all transgender people. Bindel and the Mail have jumped on it. This is how it works.

Here's a whole thread of sample tweets that disprove that assertion:

No man is likely to be punished for saying they love being one as they would feel no need to say it

Off topic a little, but that does remind me of the words of a well known expert in gender studies:

"I'm not the worlds most masculine man but I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man and so is Lola"

Wise words we could benefit from remembering today....

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 15/02/2022 14:51

(How is it, incidentally, that people apparently so aware of FWR’s existence are somehow so unaware its demography is NOT “white middle-class mums”? There’s nothing wrong with being any or all of those things & “mum” is often also a shop assistant or manager/teacher/HCP/gardener/dancer/bus driver/cleaner/research scientist/painter - or [formerly] employed in pretty much any field there is out there with associated transferable skills. People running in to screenshot things for Twitter - and to endlessly mither at MNHQ - can’t possibly miss ALL the discussions that demonstrate, over & over, that they’re chatting bubbles when it comes to the [massively sexist] tropes they use when trying to dismiss anything & everything said here, can they?)

I have lurked on these discussions extensively, and I believe their assumption goes as follows:
these women are literate and typically demonstrate good command of English spelling and grammar. Therefore they must be white and middle-class.

TheCurrywurstPrion · 15/02/2022 09:48

Plus why not love your sex, has any man been punished for saying they love being a man?

Man is widely considered the default, and therefore naturally being a man is assumed to be better. It’s brave to say you like being a woman: ie the ‘secondary sex’. No man is likely to be punished for saying they love being one as they would feel no need to say it. Indeed men who don’t want to be men often appear to be regarded with a degree of perplexity, coupled with strong sympathy and protectiveness.

supposedly the women of FWR are the ones agitating for the creation of this “anti-trans gestapo”

Judge Knowles appeared to believe that the Harry Miller case rather demonstrated that the jackboot might be on the other foot, so to speak.

Fell down the Adel mimmybirthingperson Twitter and found this….

Polishes halo 😇

Comparing much-needed investigation and lively, intelligent discussion of the issues with the actions of the Gestapo shows that this particular writer is “of very small brain” and lacks credibility.
Enough4me · 15/02/2022 09:24

I expect Adele's friends were ecstatic and supportive too. You could see she was really exasperated by winning an award, which didn't acknowledge her sex but would have before, when she loves her sex.

Plus why not love your sex, has any man been punished for saying they love being a man?

DomesticatedZombie · 15/02/2022 09:19

@TheAbbotOfUnreason

I haven’t seen a video clip of Adele saying “You’re all women who identify as women", just reports of people saying that she said it.
Odd, too, as there's footage of her whole night on there, pole dancing and onstage. Almost as if that quote was entirely made up.

..... and Adele herself has not said anything to confirm, deny or clarify her statements and there must be a reason for that, but I sure hope she has scheduled in a gin and tonic with jk Rowling in the next few weeks....

Oh bless their little cotton socks.

I do genuinely feel sorry for anyone who believes they are at genuine threat of the formation of an “anti-trans Gestapo”. The distress & confusion they must experience trying to navigate the world as a result of truly believing there are people advocating for this must be dreadful. The fact someone was willing to i. affirm that delusion rather than do ANYTHING appropriate in response & ii. claim that supposedly the women of FWR are the ones agitating for the creation of this “anti-trans gestapo” is revolting. It shows no care for the individual who apparently believes themselves at such risk; no respect for the victims of actual Gestapo (& those who still mourn them) including the sufferers of intergenerational trauma; and it potentially puts women - specifically, mothers - at risk, should there be an escalation to violence.

Poor MN though: your failure to utterly capitulate regarding FWR means that despite having stricter moderation rules for this part of the site (even creating the separate Naughty Corner!) you are accused of being unmoderated - & by implication, letting the transphobia positively flow forth.
